Hi,
I'm new here and was reading up on USN, just out of curiosity, has anyone ever been denied of acceptance to USN? Do they usually accept all students? Any info is greatly appreciated.
Hi Cupcake and Inspiration. I got accepted into the USN Oct program and have to relocate. I am also curious what Vegas is like. Has anyone seen or had a tour of the lab site on Warm Springs road? Does it look like a real program? I havent been there in person yet, and just want to get much info as possible before I pack up.
Hey, congrats on getting in! I had also considered that program. I think that with that program, you have to be able to adapt to change since it is so new. I know that because you will be part of their very first cohort, there will be a lot of things that may not be rigidly structured, but I think all-in-all, if you really stay focused and remember that this program is 70-80% self teach, you will do great. I have friends who have graduated from the traditional program. When I go up for my interview next week, I will give you feedback on the labsite and how the city is. Where are you relocating from and when are you actually moving down??
I haven't seen the lab site on Warm Springs, I have only been to the campus on Sunset. The campus itself is large and "new" looking. I did get to see some sort of lab type room where they had hospital beds and such -- it looked nice.
In regards to what it's like to live in Vegas, well, that is a very broad question that doesn't have an objective answer. If you're used to living in a big city with lots of culture (i.e. NY, SF, etc.) then you probably won't like Las Vegas since it is the definition of the absence of culture. If you're from the boonies, Vegas might seem interesting. It's pretty much just a giant suburb, not a "real city" IMHO. Gambling is definitely king here as one would imagine. You will find slot machines in every grocery store & 7-11. You will never go to the strip unless you have visitors from out of town because you will find it to be far too annoying. I literally live less than 5 miles from Las Vegas Blvd. and I can't even tell you the last time I was on the strip.
It is very very hot about 6 months out of the year. Everyone says "Oh, but it's DRY heat" like that makes it better or something. It's true that it is dry, but when it's 110 degrees that is still pretty freakin hot, wet or dry. The high today is 101 and you can easily go swimming in the middle of October. For someone like me that is from the east coast, that was pretty strange at first. It is so hot for so long that 90 degrees will eventually feel like a "cool, nice day" and you will be freezing cold when it's 70. The excessive heat like thins your blood or something I swear!
I could go on and on but this post is getting pretty long. If I missed anything, let me know =o)
