University of San Francisco ME-CNL Summer 2013

Hey everybody,

I didn't see a thread yet for the Summer 2013 cohort for USF Masters Clinical Nurse Leader Program so I decided to make one. The application deadline is coming up and figured it would be great to meet fellow applicants and stress out together haha

laugh2013 - You take both CNL classes and Nursing classes at the same time throughout the 6 semesters. It's not split up. Does that make sense? Each semester you will have 3-4 nursing classes and 1-2 CNL classes. After the 5th semester, you sit for NCLEX, and ideally you will be an RN, by the time you start the 6th semester. Your 6th semester, is the only semester where you have only CNL courses. During your 6th semester, you are working on your CNL project, and studying for the CNL exam. At the end of the 6th semester, before graduation, you sit for the CNL exam. I believe you need to pass the CNL exam in order to graduate. Perhaps MailNurse can confirm or deny that.
IngridH.... The muni pass is not free, you have to order it and pay for it yourself. I don't think USF sells them during the summer semester. I think they are only available for fall and spring semesters, not for summer semester.

DAS225 - You addressed and explained each point clearly, thank you.

I look forward to becoming a Clinical Nurse Leader. I have noticed some hospitals have job postings for Clinical Nurse Leaders. I hope more job positions will become available as early as next year or sooner. I also hope by the time I graduate from nursing school I will be able to land on a job within weeks. I read on USF's webpage that an internship is offerred for new grad RN's who are in "transition" (new grad student to new hire RN position.)

Question: Since students will take the NCLEX after the 5th semester, are we allowed to work as an RN in the event we are offerred a job position or is it recommended we wait until we graduate?

I suppose you could work during your last semester, if you were offered a position. But keep in mind, you still have 2 academic classes, plus your internship (which is ~380 hours total). 380 hours over less 15 weeks ends up being about 25-30 hours a week. I think you could end up being really over-committed, and I probably wouldn't recommend it.

Hi all,

DAS really covered all of the bases pretty well. He is correct in that if you don't pass the CNL exam you don't graduate. I believe though you have nothing to worry about as it is quite a bit away and the CNL exam pass rate is equal to the NCLEX pass rate if not better. @Ingrid....I had to chuckle that you were amazed that we get a Muni pass, but DAS is in fact correct you have to pay for it. I also believe him to be correct about there not being a Muni pass for the summer semester. @laugh people get admit notices all the way up until just before the orientation as has happened in some of the most recent Cohorts. Hang in there, all is not lost!

Hi everyone, I thought I'd give an update for those who may be wait-listed... For personal reasons I have decided to decline my offer for admission, so if you're still in the running and USF is the school for you I hope one of you will be next! Best of luck everyone!

It is really hard not to give up hope at this point! Deep breath... I called yesterday and they told me that they could not release the status of my application. @ laugh2013, there is definitely a pattern and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Friday.

Just checking in again. Please don't give up hope. I think I said it in one of my earlier posts. You may not hear up until right before your orientation. If you have not received a letter stating you are not invited to join the next cohort, there is still hope.

MarvMIC - I agree, it is hard not to give up. I feel a bit down because when we applied the turn around time was suppose to be approximately 6-8 weeks, I believe people started to get acceptance calls just a couple of weeks ago, some people are on the waitlist, and as of two days ago someone mentioned there were approximately ten spaces still available. It doesn't make it any better when family members and friends ask the question, "did you get in?" Interestingly, when I arrived home today, I received a call from a number that began with 415 area code. When I eagerly answered the telephone, to my disappointment it was not USF. Sigh. I will think positive, keep my paws crossed and hope I receive a call this Friday. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting for a phone call.

Mailnursetobe - Thank you for encouraging us!

Madrid.navarro2sad8i - Thank you for the update and for wishing us luck.

Hi Everyone,

Decisions have been made and can be read online. Go to application status, login and scroll to the bottom of your profile page.

I did not get accepted. Sigh...

Thank you all for your support and encouragement. Congratulations to those of you who will start the program in two weeks.

Im so sorry laugh2013. Im sure you will become a nurse no matter what path you take. If there is a will, there is a way! I logged into my application, but can only see that my application is complete. I don't see anything when I scroll to the bottom. Do I need to click on anything specific??
