Hey everybody,
I didn't see a thread yet for the Summer 2013 cohort for USF Masters Clinical Nurse Leader Program so I decided to make one. The application deadline is coming up and figured it would be great to meet fellow applicants and stress out together haha
@mailnursetobe, thanks for that information. One more question... was looking over the clinical dress requirements again and it said white leather shoes. I was wondering how strict they were on those since I don't have pure white leather shoes... I have Nike Free's running shoes and the material is more fabric-like than leather (not sure how familiar you are with the shoes) with some color on them, such as the swoosh mark is green. So I'm just wondering how strict they are on the "white leather shoe" requirement. Thanks again!
@DAS225: That's a good point! They say "no clogs" - does that mean "no closed-back clogs," such as Danskos? I guess the white Danskos come in patent leather, which might be easier to clean than regular leather.
I wish we didn't have to wear white - it's going to be difficult, as you say, to maintain white scrubs. But I read here that the patients prefer their nurses to wear white & that preference is important, too.
I've started studying my drug dosage calculations, as per mailnurse's recommendations. So far, they're not difficult. Lots of practice, and it will stick.
Hi all. DAS is correct on the shoes. You don't wan't any fluid penetration or to make it easier for needles to penetrate in case of dropping one. Clogs with the closed back I assume will be okay so long as they are white, as for other shoes as close to completely white as possible. @IngridH I would recommend two pairs of scrubs so that you have one always available. Be sure to wash them pretty close to after you get home.
Keep at the medical calculations you'll want them to be second nature. It's the same problem every semester with student's having difficulty with the calculations and passing the test. The test is not difficult at all you just need to complete it in half an hour. It will also include medical abbreviations, most likely the most common.
Any other questions keep them coming. Again, I wish someone would have done the same for me.
So am I!
I've got a list of the most common medical abbreviations in my pharmacology book, and they're not so bad. All the NPs at work use them in filling out patient forms, and they DEFINITELY come in handy. I made a set of paper flash cards, which I carry around in my coat pocket to review whenever I'm waiting for a bus, or whatever. This list has most of the abbreviations from my book - I don't know if it's as extensive as the list we'll need. One thing I see a lot is the letter c with a horizontal line above it, or the letter s with a horizontal line above it. The c means "with," and the s means "without".

@mailnursetobe thank you very much for all that information, you answered a lot of the questions I had. I was just wondering do we purchase our own white scrubs from somewhere else, or will the school be providing white scrubs for us to purchase? Thanks again!
