University of Rochester Accelerated Nursing Program - ABPNN

Published

I just got accepted into U of R's accelerated bachelors nursing program. Just wanted to start a thread to see who else is going there!

Not sure that not bringing a car is a great idea in Rochester. Rochester is not a great city for public transportation, but it is a great city with many things to see and do. You will not find much in walking distance from U of R. A few restaurants, but not really any stores. Also, some clinicals are at Highland Hospital which is about 2 miles away - walkable, but not pleasant in the winter. I live close to there in the Highland Park neighborhood, a beautiful neighborhood where it might be nicer to rent. There or the South Wedge are very close to U of R, you'd probably get a nicer property, better price, and there is definitely more to see and do in this area.. The white coat ghetto is just students living in rental properties (ie, not much of a neighborhood feel nor look). Not much there but the hospital. Granted, if you are young and just out of undergrad, this may work perfectly for you. However, if people are looking for more of a neighborhood and better living situation, I'd explore outside of the white coat ghetto. Feel free to reply if you're looking for more info on the area - I start in May 2011!!!

Hi Natalie-

Since I'll be coming from nyc and don't currently have a car, getting one before school starts isn't really an option. While I know it's not ideal, in your opinion is it doable to live in Rochester without a car... and, is it at all possible to do so in any neighborhood other than the "white coat ghetto?"

thanks!

Hi Lara,

I certainly think it's doable, I just am not planning to walk the 2 miles to U of R in the winter! :) If you are looking for somewhere else to live other than right there by the hospital, there are many side streets of of Mt. Hope Avenue (the University and Mt. Hope cemetary are on one side of the street, neighborhoods on the other). I would look there, and certainly some parts of the South Wedge neighborhood are probably a mile closer than where I live. Other phrases to look for for the neighborhoods would be Strong or Mt. Hope, possibly Highland - this just depends on where they are claiming the "boundaries" of the neighborhoods to be. I'm not very familiar with the neighborhood on the opposite side of the university - the 19th ward. Depending on where you look in that larger neighborhood, it might be just as far as the Highland Park neighborhood.

I guess it all depends how far you'd like to walk in the snow - coming from here I can say the sidewalks aren't always clear, and usually pretty icy, not the easiest to walk on. This being outside of the university grounds. A mile or less would be an optimal distance without a car.

Here are some sites with basic info:

http://rochestercityliving.com/ (more for houses, but it gives a description of the neighborhoods)

http://rochester.craigslist.org/apa/

http://rocwiki.org/Rochester_Neighborhoods

Alright, I hope this helps and isn't more info than needed! :) I'm sure you will make friends with people with cars too - the RTS bus runs right from the university, might not be the most direct route to shopping, but it would get you there!

Natalie

Thanks for all the info Natalie! I am going to miss the super easy commute of nyc, but I think I can make car-lessness in Rochester work for a year :)

Lara,

I just looked up this house in white coat ghetto...right across the street from the Nursing School (I googled the address)

...gonna try to view this weekend as I live 3 hours away from Roch. Has 3 bedrooms so. will be looking for house mates. Perfect location and the people sounded really nice. Nurses are living their now, so I can ask questions

Hey everyone - I created a new group on facebook for all of us starting this May. It is called "University of Rochester APNN - Class of May 2012". Please join! Anyone looking into the program in the future could join too if they were interested in it. I figured this would be an easier and more user friendly way for us to communicate.

Natalie

I think thats a great idea!!! I will join up later today, they block everything at my work!! I'm suprised this isn't blocked too! I'm very excited to meet everyone.

Hi Samanthal-

I would love to hear your thoughts once you have seen the place (or any other housemate type situations). My only concern with the "white coat ghetto," while it is super convenient to school and the hospital, is hearing that it isn't really near anything else (like grocery stores). I guess not having a car I'm going to have to figure out how much hoofing/busing I am willing to do... ugh.

Has anyone who's been accepted to the May 2011 term live in the Canandaigua area?

I just got my acceptance packet today and I'd love to get a study group going.

Living in Canandaigua would be almost 45 minutes drive. Longer in the winter with the snow. Plus the commute from the parking to the school. I am going to live in the white coat ghetto with 2 minutes walk to school. I am looking at a room with private bath in a newly renovated house with other nursing students.

Hey, we interviewed on the same day...have you heard anything?

Just confirmed everything is in and done for my app for Fall, 2011.

Anyone else!?

:lol2:

I sent all my things via Fed-Ex last week and it was signed for, but my application still states that the materials haven't been received.

Does anyone know approximately how long it takes for them to update the status of your materials?

Also, when should we be hearing back about interviews for Fall 2011?
