University of Rochester ABPNN/AMPNN May 2014

Published

Thought I'd start a thread for those applying to the U of R ABPNN/AMPNN programs for the May 2014 start. I went to undergrad nearby and had a wonderful experience volunteering at Strong and U of R is my first choice school for sure. I'm hoping to get accepted to the psychiatric speciality of the AMPNN program. Who else is applying?

Hello Everyone,

My name is Adam, and I was just accepted into the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program last week Monday. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself to everyone. I was originally on the wait list, as I am currently working on my last prerequisite course, Nutrition and Health, and I received my acceptance phone call and material last week.

I am very excited and a little nervous about starting this program. I have worked the last several years as a New York State Certified Critical Care Technician (Paramedic) for the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel EMS Department, department supervisor for the First Aid office of the local amusement park "Martin's Fantasy Island" in Grand Island, and as a volunteer firefighter - EMS Lieutenant with my home town's volunteer Fire Company.

I graduated from Niagara University with a BA in Psychology with minors in Chemistry / Gerontology / and Theater. In addition, I just graduated this past August from Medaille College with a MA in Psychology. I have always had a strong passion to want to work in health care, especially in the Pediatric field.

I just wanted to take a few minutes to say hello to everyone here and say how excited I am to meet everyone this May. Has anyone created a Facebook page for our program yet?

I hope I can start talking with some of you now prior to starting the program in May.

Thanks Everyone :-)

ADAM

Are there any females who still need a roommate? Please let me know. Thanks! (:

Hi Everyone,

I am in need of your advice because I am currently overwhelmed with what is happening.

I applied for the ABPNN for Sept/2014 and submitted my LORs, Transcripts, & application fee which were due by 2/28. On 03/11 I receive a phone call from the admissions counselor in order to setup an interview. During this phone the counselor asked me if I had the opportunity to enter in May instead September would I take the offer. I completely blanked out and I told her I needed more time to think this through. If I were to get accepted and go to school in May I would have to relocate from NYC to Rochester and have my finances in order. I am super scared because I do not want to make a financially irresponsible decision but I know this can be a great opportunity. I filled out my Fafsa and I am only allotted 12,500 a year in gov't loans, which doesn't put a dent on how much I have to pay for the entire year. Does anyone have any advice? Should I decline the offer and just wait until Sept? Are many of you required to take private loans? Is the school providing you with any aid? Do anyone know any resources I can look into because I have to account for tuition & personal expenses such as rent, food & transportation!!!

Thanks,

E

Hi all!

I'm part of the cohort before you. Congrads on your acceptance! It's an amazing program! I hope you guys are getting ready and excited to start the program. I joined this site before I started the program as well and it was super helpful to connect with a current nursing student so feel free to contact me if you guys have any questions in general, about the program, classes or tips on where to live. Hope you guys are enjoying the few months before before school starts!

Where would you recommend living? And .. What does your typical week look like? Thank you for offering your help!

Hi Everyone! Congratulations on your acceptances! I hope to be in your shoes next year at this time. I will be applying to U of R's accelerated nursing program. I am a little worried that I don't have enough experience though. I am planning on volunteering as much as I can over the summer and shadowing a nurse few times but I have read through many threads of applicants of U of R that have years of experience in jobs and even masters degrees already. Is my lack of experience going to hurt my application? I live in Rochester and attending U of R is my dream school. I want to be a strong applicant and show how dedicated I am to a career in nursing. Any suggestions and advice is welcome! Thank you!

Regarding the loans, is that just for the 2013-2014 school year (i.e. just the summer/May 2014 semester)? Because the program starts in May you would need to fill out a second FAFSA for the 2014-2015 school year (to cover Fall 2014 & Spring 2015), so 12500 might not be your entire loan package for the whole program. Disclaimer: i'm not a financial aid professional, but I'm working on figuring out my loans, and that's what I've come to understand.

Hi lddt19,

Our exact schedule is on the U of R website. Here's the direct link. Sometimes the allnurses admin will remove the link so if that happens just google University of Rochester APNN Semester Calendar.

http://son.rochester.edu/assets/pdf/Y%20JAN%20Incoming%20%20Spring%202014%20calendar.pdf

The semester schedule changes based on tests and classes but for the most part it is around same each month. Usually 2 classes per day sometimes with lab.

I would try to live as close to school as possible. You guys are coming in the summer time so snow shouldn't be an issue.

Hey guys, I am going to be graduating from this program in May 2014. I am looking for a roommate if you wouldn't mind sharing this with the rest of your class, or with your Facebook group if/when you set one up. I am a female, 25 years of age, from the midwest. I had a wonderful roommate from my program however he is moving and I need to find a replacement. Please let me know if anybody is interested?? Thank you!

hey there! I just posted below but would you mind helping me spread the word about looking for a roommate. This would have been extremely beneficial for myself as I moved to NY from out of state. I would appreciate it :) Thanks!

Hey guys there already is a Facebook page and I think it wold help some of you out who aren't getting much response here!

Hello to everyone!

First of all congrats on being accepted and starting at the U of R. I'm sure everyone and their brother has already told you how special this program is and how awesome you all are to have been accepted and they are 100% correct!

I started in the January cohort and I am available if anyone wants some guidance on what to expect for the first semester in class and clinicals. I was a new kid just a short time ago...I had moved away from my home (NC

Feel free to email me at [email protected].
