There has always been rivallry between training schools - back when it was hospital based they used to say that the "PA trained snobs the Mater trained ladies and the Royal trained nurses. Of course that changed depending on which hospital you were standing in when you heard it.

Hi,

I intend to study nursing at Griffith, Gold Coast campus, is it realy that bad? My problem is that my husband works in Southport (Gold Coast), we have 2 kids and I find it difficult cu travel every day to Brisbane to study. I'm an overseare trained vet an I decided (at almost 30) that I want to change my career, I look forward to go to school again. My dream is to became a midwife and Griffith uni is close to me and offers after 3 years of nursing, 1 year master of midwifery. I'm very confused right now, I want to became a nurse, but a realy good one, and I have another choice, I can go 1 year to UQ and finish my skill assessment as a vet. How bad is Griffith?

can you be more specific, please? is it something like: at a good uni one has 10 hours clinical experience/week and at griffith 5? I think that a nurse with less clinical experience in school may learn while working and became as good as the others, if she/he realy wants this. Or good schools teach more than the others? and graduating from griffith I may face a situation where everybody knows things that I never heard of?

It is hard to tell you it is so dependant of luck. Even in the old hospital training we had people who breezed through the three years without ever having to give a suppository while the next person was known as the um, well, you know.........(me):rotfl:

Anyway I know of people who have never seen a cardiac arrest - ever - while others have seen so many that they have lost count.

Clinical it very much depends on the quality of base experience. Where a lot of people go wrong is that they drag the students off to see this special thing or that one of a kind. That is nice but if it interrupts learning how to shower the elderly alzheimer patient without also showering the walls, ceiling and you then it is not good experience. Concentrate on the horses not the Zebras. If you come out of Uni with solid basic skill then that is as much as anyone wants. The rest is for later and we reaslise that.

I studied at Griffith gold coast and I believe that it gives a good enough education to start as a novice practitioner. It is closely linked with the Gold Coast Hospital and as you would expect (the) GCH is one of the major employers from that neck of the woods. Obviously some subjects appear to be a waste of time but overall I think you get a good education there. Of course y ou only get back what you put in. It is a great campus and if you choose to go there make sure you have a beer at the bar on a Friday arvo when the live music is on. Despite your family commitments a bit of leisure with your fellow students is a sanity saver! If you want any more specifics feel free to pm me. :)

I dont know who ranks them might be the RCN. number 1 ranked school is the curtain uni in WA.
