University of Phoenix

I never went to University of Phoenix but my fiance did (Not for nursing though). To say it is expensive is an understatement. He liked the idea of it but the cost was the hugest factor so he ultimately dropped out before he began accruing massive loans. It would have been around 50k for an associates for him.

I see that California approves U of P's nursing program which is great if you plan to go that way.

You need to consider the following:

1. Will your state BON accept a degree from this school and allow you to sit for the NCLEX?

2. Is the extraordinary cost worth it? Make sure you explore all your options.

3. How do employers in your area view degrees from this school?

FWIW, I can't personally justify spending 3 times more for tuition on a degree that it generally viewed unfavorably by employers. YMMV, but caveat emptor :)

It's the biggest for profit school, known for predatory 6 figure loans to the poor. Good luck getting the resume looked at before meeting the shredder.

I have never gone there and I wouldn't. The tuition is outrageous.

I think that there is a stigma attached to University of Phoenix as well as other for-profit universities as being low quality degree mills. Admittedly, I know nothing about the quality of the education, but the reputation is questionable. Perhaps I am a snob - but I would not go to University of Phoenix. That being said, any degree one obtains is useless if one lacks the critical thinking skills to apply and expand upon the knowledge gained from University of Phoenix or any other educational institution.

I went to University of Phoenix and I would NEVER tell anyone to go there. I went there for 8 "classes", which is equal to two semesters. Just in those two semesters, I have over $20,000 in student loans. I discontinued classes because I could not afford to continue. I did not qualify for anymore student loans and I needed about $1500 more to continue. They basically said I was SOL. So, I left and went to the local community college with plans of transferring to a 4 year. Leaving University of Phoenix was the best decision I made. As for the quality of education, there is only so much you can learn in 5 weeks. You meet once a week for 5 weeks. Not much quality there.

Another thing to consider is that if you do not finish at UoP, most of your classes will not transfer to a 2 or 4 year college. Like I said earlier, I took 8 classes, but only 3 of those transferred. Such a waste of money.

Also, it depends on if you are going for your bachelors or masters. I was going for my bachelors, at college for the first time. My father was going for his masters and it seemed that the higher level courses were better.
