Hi everyone!!! I am new to allnurses.com - I was wondering if anyone has applied for the Fall 2009 accelerated program? I have not been able to attend an information session due to scheduling conflicts. Does anyone know how many people apply to the program or know any "insider" info? I know that 50 people get in every year - I just submited my application last week for the early response deadline - good luck to all!!
I too am applying to U of M for 2010. I heard that they are adding an interview--anyone confirm that? They didn't mention when I went to info session but that was back in early Spring. Also plan to apply to WSU and U of D. A little irritated with WSU though as I have my MBA from there but they don't care and doesn't move me up on the list so I will be in the last group they look at. My first choice is U of M!!
Hi JKB,
I was at an informational meeting at U of M recently and there was no mention of an interview. Also, I had some informaiton sent to me from a U of M adviser and again, nothing about an interview. Perhaps they will add them if they had issues with some students in the past?? Who knows. Anyhow, I read what you said about Wayne and your MBA. I think they do give a slight nod to grads but the most preference goes to those who complete all nursing pre-reqs at Wayne, followed by all science courses taken there, etc. I think that its a fair system since many schools do not give any preference to the school you go to. I see many students with 3.9-4.0 GPA's coming out of community colleges - this is the competition!!! No knock on community colleges but I have friends that go there - they are good schools but they are easier than a university such as Wayne, MSU, U of M, etc. I know for a fact that Wayne looks at where you take courses - I know of a person who had a 3.9 in nursing pre-reqs not get in since she did almost all of them at a community college. I don't think its right but it is what it is.
I am applying to Wayne, MSU, U of M, and Oakland. All of these schools are outstanding. I think Wayne has the strongest reputation in the area and their NCLEX pass rate is almost 100 %. But you can't go wrong with any of those.
Good Luck!!
Hi Wayne State Grad,
Do you know when U of M will have application up as they had said it would be in August?? Also I am wondering if it will hurt me taking most of my science pre-req's at Community Colleges? I have a 3.9 undergrad from CMU and a 3.67 MBA from WSU. But I have also been out of school for awhile--I worked at Ford in Marketing, Sales, and Operations for 12 years.
No, I don't think it will hurt you at all. If I were to start fresh, I would go to the community college route. Its cheaper and they transfer so what's not to like? I know it hurt some people at Wayne(going the community college route) but I don't think U of M will look down upon it if you do decide to go the CC route. I believe they have a joint effort with Washtenaw CC and others. But if you do go to community college, make sure you get high grades(mostly A's). I think nursing colleges do look at where you took your classes and they just know the community colleges are not as difficult - its a fact. But they also know you can get a good education there or they wouldn't accept them. Bottom line is make sure you learn a lot in the pre-reqs because they will lay the foundation for the nursing courses. The NCLEX will pull from all your knowledge including pre-reqs. So that's why I took my key courses at the university level - I wanted to make sure I had good profs and I did.
As far as the application date - I believe it will come out mid-August. I hear U of M is especially slow with decisions(3-6 months or more). I believe they take the longest of any school I am applying to. I am not thrilled about it because you could be mid-way through the semester taking classes for U of M only to be rejected. I think they should take no longer than 10 weeks from the time you apply. My opinion for whatever its worth.
Good Luck!!
Wayne State Grad, thank you for your informative post. In your opinion, do you think U of M looks down upon you if you have only 3 classes of the science portion completed? I think the application pool this year will especially fierce and I am trying to gauge how competive my application is. thanks!
I believe they will focus in on science courses because your performance in these will determine if can handle the rigorous program. I cannot say they would look down upon it if you only finished three since they would look at your overall academic performance. I don't think this application pool will be any different than last year or even previous years. They will average 300-400 applicants for 65 spots!! I think if you look at any nursing school, you will find 20-30 % acceptance. That's tough I know. I have a 3.53 for U of M which will likely be closer to 3.7 when I am completed with my last few classes - and I feel I am a mid to lower candidate. I think the essays will play a big role as well and if you have some medical experience that would certainly enhance your application.
The thing I like about U of M is they look at more than just GPA - but GPA is king.
Good luck.
All, I just found out today that two of my science pre-reqs are too old. U of M only accepts science courses which are 7 years or less. Now I will lose a 4.0. It's still possible for me to finish all my classes on time but there will be less for them to evaluate. Just fair warning to anyone applying. I feel like a dope since I attended the informational meeting and they never mentioned that science courses must be 7 years or less. Their presentation does not state this; nor does the website. The only thing I found today was in their FAQ - it states strongly recommended but not a requirement. When I emailed U of M SON, I got an arrogant response that - 'it is a requirement' now when I asked if classes had to be 7 or less. So any old timers like me(1993 grad) - make sure you know this supposed fact. They also told me that its strongly recommended that non-science course be 7 years or less. So it's quite apparent to me that they favor more recent grads. Period. But I understand that the science courses should be up to date as things do change in terms of research and new findings, etc. I just have a problem with U of M's communication(or lack there of). Good luck everyone. ps Sorry if I sounded negative. My chances of getting in went way down based on this and now I am contemplating not even applying. I have 3 other schools which do not have this requirement. I figure I have 133 credits under my belt and now I need 8 more+4 other pre-reqs.

I think my anatomy/physiology professor at Washtenaw CC would disagree with you. She also teaches the exact same course at U of M. Same material, same tests. Besides, U of M would not accept the transfers if the courses were not similar.
Dave - if you read my post, I did say U of M has a joint effort with Washtenaw and you can get a good education at a CC - but I stand by my statement since I know students who had high GPA's from community colleges get rejected at nursing schools while lower GPA's got in - so it does matter where you take your classes. My opinion.

I see your point. Though I do think that in the case of U of M. The essays are what makes the determination, which could explain 4.0ers (is that word?) not getting in. You can't tell much about a student by just getting an A. You can gather a world of information by how they answer the three essay questions

Cool, thanks. Ms Nice - I was not responding to your post about the wait list but just general questions for Fall of 2010.
