University of Michigan (UofM) Accelerated program

Published

Hi everyone!!! I am new to allnurses.com - I was wondering if anyone has applied for the Fall 2009 accelerated program? I have not been able to attend an information session due to scheduling conflicts. Does anyone know how many people apply to the program or know any "insider" info? I know that 50 people get in every year - I just submited my application last week for the early response deadline - good luck to all!!

Hi! How did the reception go for everyone on March 25th?

I really enjoyed it! It was great to finally hear a little more about the program and to start meeting some of the other people that will be in the group. There's another orientation coming in May, where we will actually get to start registering for classes and clinicals. .....YAY!

How many people were at the session?

There were about 20 people in this session out of the 64 that will begin the program in the Fall.

Hi gang, Nursing Newbie here. After 20 years as an architect, I have decided (I think) to take a career turn and go into nursing. I just found this forum, and this U of M thread. I am looking into the UofM's Second Degree program. I did my masters at the U, and I live in Ann Arbor, so it would be my first choice. Question right off the bat . . . did UM change the application deadline schedule? A friend of mine who applied here a few years ago said the deadline was October 2009 for the Fall 2010 class, but the website says Feb, 2010 for the Fall 2010 class. Also, did most of you do your pre-reqs at Washtenaw? I just signed up there to take Chem and Bio. Hopefully my brain still works after all these years, although with all the distractions of being a teenager in college years ago (you know what I mean), I'm amazed it worked at all back then LOL

Anyways, just wanted to say "hi" to you all

Welcome Dave 48103,

U of M now has a rolling admission so the dead line will be Feb. 2010.

I take it most of the ones that were admitted this time were 20 somethings who just were finishing a first BA degree.

Many who apply do take there classes at Washtenaw. I did some there and some at LCC, EMU, and JCC.

The key is to get you classes done before you apply in Aug. Also apply as early as possible.

I am one of the waitlisted people so I am applying other places as well. It is something to look at.

Good luck you will do great.

I think they are still deciding how to do the admissions process for next year, since this year's (starting Fall 2009) was a little chaotic. Our deadline was February 1, 2009 and we have until August 24, 2009 to finish prerequisites before beginning. You probably noticed that it is best to apply VERY VERY early, WAAAYYYYY before February 1st. Your best bet is to submit an app by August or September.

I had 6 pre req's to take and I've done 5 at Washtenaw. If I could take my last class (Pharmacology) I would, BUT, the class fill up and I haven't been granted an override, so, I will be trying to take it at Jackson CC.

LOL, the first class may be a little rough as you get back in to the swing of things, but, you are right.... if we could do it back then when we didn't really care, you can definitely do it when you WANT to do it!

Take care, Alissa

I have to disagree with MSNICE1's comments..... I can't speak for the whole group since I've only met a 1/3 of them, but the group is not all 20somethings JUST finishing up their first degree, far from it.

I also highly disagree with the advice to finish all of your prereq's before you apply in August. When I applied, I had only completed 1 out of my 6 classes. So far, out of the 10 or so other people I have met, not a single person is finished with their prereq's yet. In the application you have to submit a timeline for completing your classes. They know if it's possible or not and if you don't complete them, you don't start and they take someone from the wait list.

Thanks! Since I am just starting pre-reqs in May (just 2 of them), there is obviously no way that I would have most of them done this fall. I assume that aside from GPA, for those entering a second career degree program, that they also would look heavily at your "life experiences", your career, volunteer activities, how you write about yourself, etc . . .

I think I would plan on applying perhaps after I finished taking fall classes at WCC.

Speaking of WCC, I am waitlisted for both CEM105 & BIO111, but I am the only one on the waitlist, so I am hopeful

Dave

PS, and sorry if I don't respond to a couple of the private emails some of you just sent me, apparantly I need to post 15 times before I get the privelege of private messaging back, since i just joined today. I'm a pretty social guy, so that shouldn't be a problem

Dave, if you are #1 on the waitlist, you will be fine. There are always several people who don't show up for the first few classes and they're automatically dropped.

Do they actually rank the waitlisted people? Someone in the department told me they just review everyone again for spots, that there wasn't an actual list. I could have gotten the wrong information though.

I think that they are talking about the waitlist for the class as Washtenaw. According to U of M website and information I gained for the advising session, the waitlist for entry into the program is not ranked.
