University of Miami Summer 2021 ABSN

Published

Hey guys! I know it's early but I thought I would start this. Has anyone applied to this program yet?

Specializes in Future Oncology Nurse.

Oncology is a very rewarding field. The people you meet and get the opportunity to help, is amazing ? I worked in an oncology center for a few years and loved it. The best part was celebrating their last day of chemo. It was beautiful.

Boca is lovely ! I have relatives that live up there, it’s very far though to commute to UM. There are apartments available around the area that aren’t too pricey. Not  sure if that’s something you guys would be interested in.

The plan is to become an oncology ARNP and potentially an adjunct professor of nursing. I worked in training & development so I’m used to teaching and I enjoy it. I think you should go to NP school if that is your passion. There are programs where you can do it part time so you can work/gain experience and do classes. If that is something that works for you.

It's definitely my goal to go to NP school...I am just not sure where yet (all depends on cost)...

I am a little concerned about travelling to UM from Boca to be honest. The traffic! I have about 2 months to figure out we will do....pre having kids this would have been an easy move. Ugh.

By the way, Duke has a good Oncology specialty (https://nursing.duke.edu/academic-programs/MSN-master-science-nursing/oncology-specialty that you could add on to your NP. I like Duke's NP Program mainly because you can do the courses online, clinicals in your home town, you can still keep your RN job, and you only have to go to the campus like once per semester for a few days. The only downside might be the cost.

Ohhh yes - you have to think about where the kids will go to school and all that. Not sure what age they are, but there are some good schools down here. Sunset is really good and known for their foreign language programs. I don’t have kids yet, but that’s where I want them to go LOL. The traffic IS totally ridiculous in the morning so it’s a lot to think about.

Thank you for the link! I’m perusing and liking it!! The plan would be to stay at UM, but this is really good information ?

Thanks...I will check out that school (one that's 8 and the other is just a year old) . Still hoping I can move to Miami though.

No problem, let me know if you have any other questions about the area. I moved down here from Broward about 2 years ago, but my husband has lived here all his life so we are well acquainted ?

Yes...I definitely have questions.....by the way, which neighborhoods would get me to UM quickly in your opinion?

If you’re going to UM, I recommend living nearby in general. No preference on neighborhood when it comes to distance. The área has everything you could need as it caters to both college students and the families that reside here. For me, a lot of things are walking distance, I walk to Publix instead of driving LOL. US-1 does get congested during peak hours so that’s the only thing I would keep in mind when searching.

Hi Antho! That's a quick turnaround for the canelink. The Summer session starts May 17 so I am hoping that admissions are working through the rest of the applications quickly.

By the way, do you have any prereqs outstanding? I have a crazy amount:

- Chem with lab

- Anatomy & Physiology 2 with lab

- Microbiology

-Lab portion of AP 1

I am taking all of these courses right now....studying every day.

I wish you the very best with your admissions decision......keeping fingers crossed for you.

Hi again! I don't have any outstanding pre-reqs. I finished my last ones last semester. You sound like you're killing it though! Keep up the good work! Thank you, fingers crossed over here too!! ?

Hi y’all!

I am an admitted student and I am so excited for school this Summer. Can some one in the previous cohort tell me if we have a long Christmas break (around 20 days) or a short one (10 days)? Thank you so much for answering!

Congratulations. I am not a current student....but as per their fall 2020 calendar....last year, the semester ended on December 4, 2020. They came back for the Spring semester 2021 with classes beginning on January 25, 2021. But hey, that's what I see on their calendar...who knows if there is a special calendar for the accelerated program?
