University of Miami Accelerated BSN Summer 2015

Published

Hello :)

I am kind of early with this thread, but I am pretty excited about the possibility of starting nursing school in May! Anybody else out there considering UM's ABSN program for summer 15? Also, anybody that has gotten in the program if you don't mind sharing helpful information, please do! I will still have 3 outstanding pre-reqs that I am registered to take in Spring. My cum GPA & pre-req GPA without those last 3 classes will be a 3.3 for both. I think I have a fair chance, could be better! (and will be once I finish pre-reqs) But anyway, share your thoughts about this program if you are considering as well! & good luck :)

If I remember correctly, you need to have a parking pass but there are no color restrictions. The way that UM does it is that each parking lot is a color. During the normal school semesters (fall and spring) the color restrictions are enforced. During the summer, you can have any color parking pass, as long as you have one. What I did is I found someone on a UM page on facebook (i'm sure if you search for free and for sale at UM or something along those lines you will find a facebook page) and bought a parking pass from someone who was leaving and/or graduating that summer. As we get closer to summer, a lot of people will probably post their parking passes for sale. I got mine for like $20 (which isn't bad because its almost $500 during the regular school year!)

The color of the nursing school parking lot is red, but its not restricted to that color (as i said previously) during the summer.

There is also a metro stop on the other side of campus if you are interested in taking the metro.

Then in the fall if you plan to drive you'll have to purchase a new parking pass.

Do you have any advice as far as textbooks? Should we wait and see what we actually should buy? Also, how much free time do you think you have? I'm thinking of keeping a dog I've fostered and just want to know if that would be a huge mistake (especially for first semester). Thank you!

I was verified march 19th also! Have you received any information on how to set up your cane link yet? I see a lot of people saying you can see your acceptance there before getting it via snail mail but I haven't gotten any info from UM on how to set one up =/

@tabularawsa ^^^^

I got in! :) excited.. I will be adding the Fb page asap! Lol

Ok for my first semester in the summer I had clinical once a week (i had monday) from 7am-7pm.... yes its a very long day but you'll only have a 12 hour clinical the first semester!

The rest of the week we had classes everyday and yes the first class of the day is usually at 8am and classes go until 3-4 in the afternoon. These include lectures and labs which are the the University of Miami Campus in Coral Gables.

Do not let this semester overwhelm you!!!!!! It is very very draining and people are weeded out during this semester. My advice: go to every single class even if you don't feel like it. It helps to make sure you are on the right track (especially the first semester when you are just adjusting).

Also in the first semester you will have pharmacology and STUDY AHEAD OF TIME. There are so many meds its impossible to wait until the last minute and do well. Go to his class and he will prepare you well. This will only help you more throughout the rest of the program to have your medications down.

Ok so now second semester

I had classes monday, tuesday and wednesday from 8-4 and then clinicals on thursday and friday from 7am-3:30pm.

By this time, you will have the hang of the whole nursing school thing and be able to focus more on what is important to learn and focus on.

I'm currently in my last semester graduating is less than 2 months! And we have clinicals monday, tuesday and thursday from 7-3:30. Classes are on wednesday and friday.

Of course everything depends on your exact professors and clinical instructors. Some clinical instructors require students to be at the hospital at 6:45 and some not until 7. You will also be at different hospitals through out the area so make sure to factor that into communte time. A bunch of people in my class commute from fort lauderdale.

If anything doesn't make sense or you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

ALSO- if you have not received a letter yet, check your cane link account and go to communication on the right side because that's how I found out I got in before I got the letter.

Good luck!!

How did you get information on getting your cane link? Does UM send you information to set one up? I haven't received anything on how to do that :/

Aggio, just go on their website and create a cane link. It will give you a number to call once you get to the point where you have a user ID/ have to enter a password. Then you have to call they will give you a temp password, you set your own, then you will have access. This may not be the exact instructions but from what I remember doing it went something like this lol.

hi guys! i was recently admitted to the program (yay!) so i sent a request to the fb group! if someone could add me that'd be super great. i can't wait to meet all of u!

Same here - waiting to be added to the fb group!

Ahhh thank you so much! I called IT support and they were able to give me the info I needed to log on. So I logged in but under application status it says application incomplete. Should I be worried about this? Anyone else have or heard of this problem? Idk if its because they haven't reached a decision for me yet or if its because they're missing files for my application :/

if anyone has any info i'd totally appreciate it. again thank you @ambitious_shan for replying! :)

i'm considering calling the nursing school to ask but I don't want to seem annoying lol the anticipation is seriously killer, i'm never waiting this late to apply to anything again! Lol

@Aggio if it helps, my canelink still says application incomplete and I got accepted last month lol. I wouldn't worry about that. You should check in the inbox on canelink for any letters though. Hopefully you will find out soon!!

Thank you I will! Is the inbox on canelink just the "communication center" or am I not seeing it?

For textbooks - I honestly don't remember for first semester. I would go to class and see what the professor says. Of course its up to you, but to be honest - there is NO way that you can read every single assigned reading from every class unless you are up 24 hours a day. Some textbooks are required because they have an online component of quizzes, assignments, etc.

The powerpoints usually have most of the information needed for quizzes/tests combined with notes that you will take during lectures.

Free time does not come around often... haha. You are very very busy, especially first semester. You are at the hospital for 12 hours once a week and at school form 8-4ish the other days of the week (at least thats what we had) and then studying most of the time you are at home so its up to you!!
