University of Miami Accelerated BSN Summer 2015

Published

Hello :)

I am kind of early with this thread, but I am pretty excited about the possibility of starting nursing school in May! Anybody else out there considering UM's ABSN program for summer 15? Also, anybody that has gotten in the program if you don't mind sharing helpful information, please do! I will still have 3 outstanding pre-reqs that I am registered to take in Spring. My cum GPA & pre-req GPA without those last 3 classes will be a 3.3 for both. I think I have a fair chance, could be better! (and will be once I finish pre-reqs) But anyway, share your thoughts about this program if you are considering as well! & good luck :)

Hey everybody! Congrats on your acceptance into the nursing program at UM! I was in your exact shoes a year ago and I'm about to graduate and take boards in 2 months!

If anybody has any specific questions let me know! I hope to help you out if I can because I know I was confused with everything going on and moving to a brand new city!

Once again congrats and relax before one of the most hectic years of your life! It will fly by!

Thank you so much for reaching out and posting!

My question is this: what is the class schedule like for each semester (at least from your experience)? How many days a week are we on campus/ in class each semester and how many days are we in clinical? From your schedule, what days of the week were these? I know it may vary, but I am just trying to get a feel for how it will work out. I live pretty far from campus (near Ft. Lauderdale) and am just trying to plan for commutes.

Also, how long should we expect to be on campus on class days? Were they generally 8am start times?

I really appreciate you giving us information about the program, it will be of great help.

Thanks again!

Hey everyone,

are they still sendng out admission decisions? I applied February 25th and have yet to hear anything from them. The wait is killer! lol

I FINALLY have been verified! How long did it take for you guys to get your answer after verification? And was it via e mail first, snail mail, etc? Thanks!! This is driving me nuts😁

@Tabularawsa,

I had to contact NursingCAS and should soon be verified. They cleared some questions I had, not sure if everyone else knew but they have access to our applications even without being verified. So, we should be hearing soon enough. Good luck everyone!

@NurseNessa87, I believe you applied closer to the deadline, so your application will be read later because Miami is rolling and reads by the order that it comes in. Applications opened in October.

I'll be declining my offer. Good luck to you all!

@Charming_Kitty

Thank you! That lessens the anxiety a tad, haha. Btw, best of luck to you and your future endeavors! I know you had a ton of schools to choose from and I'm sure you'll become a successful nurse in the near future.

Ok for my first semester in the summer I had clinical once a week (i had monday) from 7am-7pm.... yes its a very long day but you'll only have a 12 hour clinical the first semester!

The rest of the week we had classes everyday and yes the first class of the day is usually at 8am and classes go until 3-4 in the afternoon. These include lectures and labs which are the the University of Miami Campus in Coral Gables.

Do not let this semester overwhelm you!!!!!! It is very very draining and people are weeded out during this semester. My advice: go to every single class even if you don't feel like it. It helps to make sure you are on the right track (especially the first semester when you are just adjusting).

Also in the first semester you will have pharmacology and STUDY AHEAD OF TIME. There are so many meds its impossible to wait until the last minute and do well. Go to his class and he will prepare you well. This will only help you more throughout the rest of the program to have your medications down.

Ok so now second semester

I had classes monday, tuesday and wednesday from 8-4 and then clinicals on thursday and friday from 7am-3:30pm.

By this time, you will have the hang of the whole nursing school thing and be able to focus more on what is important to learn and focus on.

I'm currently in my last semester graduating is less than 2 months! And we have clinicals monday, tuesday and thursday from 7-3:30. Classes are on wednesday and friday.

Of course everything depends on your exact professors and clinical instructors. Some clinical instructors require students to be at the hospital at 6:45 and some not until 7. You will also be at different hospitals through out the area so make sure to factor that into communte time. A bunch of people in my class commute from fort lauderdale.

If anything doesn't make sense or you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

ALSO- if you have not received a letter yet, check your cane link account and go to communication on the right side because that's how I found out I got in before I got the letter.

Good luck!!

@ambryce Wow those hours don't sound too bad at all! Thanks for the info! I had a question about the parking pass.. Does the ABSN have a special parking pass for the summer semester? I saw the parking site said they don't require a parking pass for the summer but your car has to have an old UM sticker at least, but parking passes don't go on sale until like July for commuters?? Do you know about otherwise? Thanks for the info and taking time to answer people's questions on here :)

ambryce,

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This information is sooo helpful and prevents us from going in completely blind. I truly appreciate your time and effort in helping us to all start our journey and follow in your footsteps.

So happy for you, keep chugging through! You are almost there!

If I remember correctly, you need to have a parking pass but there are no color restrictions. The way that UM does it is that each parking lot is a color. During the normal school semesters (fall and spring) the color restrictions are enforced. During the summer, you can have any color parking pass, as long as you have one. What I did is I found someone on a UM page on facebook (i'm sure if you search for free and for sale at UM or something along those lines you will find a facebook page) and bought a parking pass from someone who was leaving and/or graduating that summer. As we get closer to summer, a lot of people will probably post their parking passes for sale. I got mine for like $20 (which isn't bad because its almost $500 during the regular school year!)

The color of the nursing school parking lot is red, but its not restricted to that color (as i said previously) during the summer.

There is also a metro stop on the other side of campus if you are interested in taking the metro.

Then in the fall if you plan to drive you'll have to purchase a new parking pass.

No problem!! I was SO lost and confused last year that I promised myself to help out the new incoming class :)

Hey Girls,

So I just received my acceptance letter for May. I am moving to Miami from New York. If any of you are looking for a roommate let me know. My email is [email protected]
