Hello :)
I am kind of early with this thread, but I am pretty excited about the possibility of starting nursing school in May! Anybody else out there considering UM's ABSN program for summer 15? Also, anybody that has gotten in the program if you don't mind sharing helpful information, please do! I will still have 3 outstanding pre-reqs that I am registered to take in Spring. My cum GPA & pre-req GPA without those last 3 classes will be a 3.3 for both. I think I have a fair chance, could be better! (and will be once I finish pre-reqs) But anyway, share your thoughts about this program if you are considering as well! & good luck :)
Ok for my first semester in the summer I had clinical once a week (i had monday) from 7am-7pm.... yes its a very long day but you'll only have a 12 hour clinical the first semester!
The rest of the week we had classes everyday and yes the first class of the day is usually at 8am and classes go until 3-4 in the afternoon. These include lectures and labs which are the the University of Miami Campus in Coral Gables.
Do not let this semester overwhelm you!!!!!! It is very very draining and people are weeded out during this semester. My advice: go to every single class even if you don't feel like it. It helps to make sure you are on the right track (especially the first semester when you are just adjusting).
Also in the first semester you will have pharmacology and STUDY AHEAD OF TIME. There are so many meds its impossible to wait until the last minute and do well. Go to his class and he will prepare you well. This will only help you more throughout the rest of the program to have your medications down.
Ok so now second semester
I had classes monday, tuesday and wednesday from 8-4 and then clinicals on thursday and friday from 7am-3:30pm.
By this time, you will have the hang of the whole nursing school thing and be able to focus more on what is important to learn and focus on.
I'm currently in my last semester graduating is less than 2 months! And we have clinicals monday, tuesday and thursday from 7-3:30. Classes are on wednesday and friday.
Of course everything depends on your exact professors and clinical instructors. Some clinical instructors require students to be at the hospital at 6:45 and some not until 7. You will also be at different hospitals through out the area so make sure to factor that into communte time. A bunch of people in my class commute from fort lauderdale.
If anything doesn't make sense or you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
ALSO- if you have not received a letter yet, check your cane link account and go to communication on the right side because that's how I found out I got in before I got the letter.
Good luck!!
@ambryce Wow those hours don't sound too bad at all! Thanks for the info! I had a question about the parking pass.. Does the ABSN have a special parking pass for the summer semester? I saw the parking site said they don't require a parking pass for the summer but your car has to have an old UM sticker at least, but parking passes don't go on sale until like July for commuters?? Do you know about otherwise? Thanks for the info and taking time to answer people's questions on here :)
If I remember correctly, you need to have a parking pass but there are no color restrictions. The way that UM does it is that each parking lot is a color. During the normal school semesters (fall and spring) the color restrictions are enforced. During the summer, you can have any color parking pass, as long as you have one. What I did is I found someone on a UM page on facebook (i'm sure if you search for free and for sale at UM or something along those lines you will find a facebook page) and bought a parking pass from someone who was leaving and/or graduating that summer. As we get closer to summer, a lot of people will probably post their parking passes for sale. I got mine for like $20 (which isn't bad because its almost $500 during the regular school year!)
The color of the nursing school parking lot is red, but its not restricted to that color (as i said previously) during the summer.
There is also a metro stop on the other side of campus if you are interested in taking the metro.
Then in the fall if you plan to drive you'll have to purchase a new parking pass.
Hey Girls,
So I just received my acceptance letter for May. I am moving to Miami from New York. If any of you are looking for a roommate let me know. My email is [email protected]

Thank you so much for reaching out and posting!
My question is this: what is the class schedule like for each semester (at least from your experience)? How many days a week are we on campus/ in class each semester and how many days are we in clinical? From your schedule, what days of the week were these? I know it may vary, but I am just trying to get a feel for how it will work out. I live pretty far from campus (near Ft. Lauderdale) and am just trying to plan for commutes.
Also, how long should we expect to be on campus on class days? Were they generally 8am start times?
I really appreciate you giving us information about the program, it will be of great help.
Thanks again!
