I'm new to this site so I apologize in advance if a thread for this has already started but I am looking for any applicants out there for the FNP program for Fall 2011 at University of Maryland's school of nursing. I'm totally stressing over this waiting because I work with this guy who applied last semester and was rejected and he's pretty much a genius, lol. Then I found some posts from Fall 2010 and everyone was rejected. How competitive is getting into this program. I'm starting to think I should really be thinking about what I will do if I don't get in. Anyone know what they are looking for in the application process other than a high GPA?
Yes, I applied to the FNP program and had an interview. Which day did you interview? I felt that mine did not go well at all and when I emailed admissions, they said the interview was weighted heavily so I am not very hopeful.
Why do you feel that way? I went the second week. I don't feel like it went completely bad but if you had the same interviewers as I, I remember feeling a little unsure afterwards. I just didn't get much feedback/conversation during the interview therefore couldn't tell what they really thought of me. But I assumed it was them being pressed for time and maybe some personality differences?? I had another interview that I thought was WONDERFUL but I didn't get into that program. So it seems sometimes you just never know....Anyways I guess we will find out sooner than later
I felt that there was no rapport at all, definitely not a warm environment. Not sure if they were trying to be that way or that was how they just are. I had prepared and felt that I did not have a good opportunity to really discuss my experiences, etc. It was just not what I really expected. And, what did you think of the writing sample? I thought that was a little strange that we had to do that.
True. Well we felt the same way. So that's more confirmation that yours wasn't bad! There def wasn't a lot of time for conversation. Just question, answer, next question, answer lol. I'm used to interviews that have more of a free flowing dialogue.
I was pleasantly surprised by the writing sample. I was forewarned about it but I was expecting and prepping for the topic to be much more difficult.
Hi, Jani78rn, I've been an ED nurse for two years. As you could tell, nursing is a second career for me. When I made the switch, I was accepted to several three-year-long NP programs for non-nurses. I thought I'd learn a lot more by working as a nurse first, though, so I opted to just do the BSN first.
If I'd known back then in 2007 that it would be so difficult to get into an MSN program in 2011, though, I would have done one of the three-year MSN programs for non-nurses instead of just the BSN. Well, that's 20/20 hindsight, I guess. And I really am learning a lot in the ED, more than I ever could have learned just by going to school.
I'd probably have had better luck applying to one of my alma maters, but for the sake of my son, I'm stuck in Baltimore indefinitely (his dad got a job here, and we split time with our son 50-50). It would be too long a commute back to go to school back in the Midwest or at UCLA! : p
The admissions process is a mystery. None of us should take it too personally. Enjoy the summer!
