I'm new to this site so I apologize in advance if a thread for this has already started but I am looking for any applicants out there for the FNP program for Fall 2011 at University of Maryland's school of nursing. I'm totally stressing over this waiting because I work with this guy who applied last semester and was rejected and he's pretty much a genius, lol. Then I found some posts from Fall 2010 and everyone was rejected. How competitive is getting into this program. I'm starting to think I should really be thinking about what I will do if I don't get in. Anyone know what they are looking for in the application process other than a high GPA?
Anyone have any ideas on what to do to make the application, CV, or goals and objective statement (personally I thought at least that was pretty good, lol)look any more attractive in this process??
It's probably best to hear it from someone on the admissions committee or who is in the program (which I'm clearly neither lol) but I think they would also like to see some leadership experience. If you are able to go to one of the FNP information sessions (I don't see any coming up but keep checking the calendar on the website- I've found that it is frequently updated) they give you some stats on the May 2012 graduates that you may find helpful. They said the class had a GPA of >3.5 in nursing, >3.4 in the sciences, RN practice ranging from 1-10 years, a diverse nursing background, are global (I think this means they have traveled the world) and have multiple degree outside of nursing (which may be harder to achieve if that's not in your plan).
Hope this helps a little!
That's interesting . . . I have 3 degrees outside of nursing (a master's, a doctorate, and another bachelor's), a 4.0 in the science classes, and 3.75 in the nursing classes (from a nursing school ranked at the same level as the U of Md). I've lived and worked abroad (in two former republics of the Soviet Union). But I guess I still didn't get in, as nobody's contacted me about an interview.
Oh well! I wish everyone the best of luck in making your dreams come true. Don't let one "no" keep you from trying!

Hmmm well so much for that theory. You're well educated and clearly qualified!!
For those who had an interview, how do you think it went? I was also contacted for an interview. I have heard from a friend currently in the program that they have received a lot applicants this year and thus the interviews. People I know in the program did not have to interview. This is definitely a change from previous years. I hope it works out but if it's true there are so few spots, seems unlikely!

can i ask which program you are doing rn-bsn or np?? and when were you called for an interview??
A few nights ago in a panicked frenzy I applied to 16 different job positions. Have 1 interview so far. I hate to be so negative about my chances at Maryland because I really want to get in, but it's hard not to be completely hopeless at this point. Anyone heard anything?
i have still heard nothing here for the FNP program...I am pretty much assuming it's a no so I am working on plan B, but I still wish you luck!
Well, the wait is over for me-- "Decision Made: Rejection-Application". Now comes the embarrassing part of telling everyone I didn't get in. Even though I knew it wasn't likely for me, it still sucks. Going to cry now. And look for jobs....Good luck to everyone out there. Thanks for your support through this waiting game!

I'm sure I'm right in line behind you! Don't be embarrassed, there are plenty that will get "rejected". I'm going to have to tell my whole family too...it's all good! Better luck next time right?!! I wish you all the best with whatever you choose to do! :)

Haha, I only applied to Maryland as well (what was I thinking?!) As far as buffing up the old resume, I can only assume that a lot of pertinent experience helps, as well as excellent recommendations. Surely it helps to have more certifications, like
CCRN, etc.... I know that everything will work out just fine in the end. Good luck to you too!
