U.S.A. Hawaii

I'm applying for UH MEPN program for Fall 2009. Has anyone heard about the program? It's fairly new but I just want to know what I'm getting myself into...lol. I know overall, nursing school is tough but would like some feedback on the MEPN program itself.

Thanks!

Hi Wahine,

I have no idea how to send a personal message either, so I will just give you an email address I don't use too often on here. If you would, just email me the contact that would be able to answer some questions!! My email address is:

Thanks so much!! I will be looking for your email!

Cheers

Hi everybody,

For everyone who is not living in Hawaii, how much is the total tuition for us non-residents?

I looked up the cost per credit and its over $1,000. The program is also around 100 units i believe give or take. So would the program cost over $100,000??? I'm unsure of everything or if I'm even right. Also, for those who are in the program.... how much financial aid do you get (if you are from out of state) if any????

I want to apply here but the price is scaring me a little...

Please let me know your experiences. Thank you :)

I've posted the Getting Started guide for the MEPN program on my blog for future applicants - It answers alot of questions I had and wished would have been answered before I applied, hope it helps.

WOOT544, Tuition is expensive especially for out of state residents. A graduate of the program who was an out of stater let me know that he recieved financial aid for twice the amount of tuiton and that there are programs you can work at such as low income county hospitals after you graduate where the government "forgives" alot of your loans (only FAFSA loans). Hope that helps .

You can also post questions on the UH Manoa MEPN Facebook page and sometimes graduates will answer them for you

Thanks Suzie! Wow yes your blog is very helpful... I'm so glad you're helping us out :) and replied so fast. You're heaven sent!

Hey All, Just a question..

How are you out of state students planning on paying the tuition?!?!

Hey All, Just a question..

How are you out of state students planning on paying the tuition?!?!

thats what i would like to know.... have you been accepted Michelle? I live in CA and don't know if i should apply due to the tuition!

I was accepted, but unless I get a fat check from some generous soul, I don't think I will be going. The total cost would be almost $71000 the first year and $80000 for the last two years.. It is a complete rip off coming from out of state. I won't be saddling myself with that much debt for school, I would never pay it off!!

Out of state tuition IS expensive but financial aid has awarded full cost of tuition, books and cost of living in the past. Unfortunately they only give you about $13,500 for cost of living which is not really enough in Hawaii but you can do the first year on FAFSA loans alone if you room with someone and eat cheap.

After the first year you can work while going to school so that would help defer some of the cost.

It's expensive BUT if "they" change the rules in 2015 and require APN's to have a graduate degree then anyone not graduated as a masters prepared nurse by then would need to pay for both a BSN and then a BSN to graduate program. I have looked at the cost and time this plan would take and in the long run it's worth it to pay alot and get in to the field while they are still accepting masters prepared nurses. Of course they may not change the rules by 2015... but they most likely will at some point.

It's a public university. The state subsidizes the education of residents with the hope that they will remain in the state and benefit our healthcare community. The cost of your education is still greater than even what out-of-state students pay. If you think it is so unfair, why not attend a public institution in your home state?

I am from Hawaii and am currently seeking a similar program out of state (or the lengthy 2nd bachelor's route) due to being wait-listed then rejected. As I had stated before, during my interview I was informed that 50% of applicants were accepted from out of state, which seems unusually high for a state school. I have worked at a community clinic serving the homeless population in Hawaii and hope to continue to work in this state with this population. I am highly dedicated to my community here in Hawaii and have extensive family here also. I hope that in the future the school might consider local applicants as somewhat of a priority.

I wanted to see if we could get this going for anyone applying for the Fall 2012 MEPN program. I have read some of the posts from previous years and wanted to see if anyone who applied this year would want to communicate like the previous applicants did. Let me know if anyone is interested! :)

Yes, I have applied to MEPN with FNP concentration. Do we also have to interview this year? I couldn't find anything about it on the UHI website. Much aloha...
