I got my acceptance letter today! I'll be starting the traditional program on May 16.
For those who have encouraged me along the way and passed along condolences when I was turned down by CU last year - LOOK! I FINALLY got a letter!
And, for those still waiting on their own letters... don't give up, you can do it too! :redpinkhe

Hi SD,
I know this thread is a little old but it is never too late to say CONGRATULATIONS! I followed the UC thread too and really felt for you when they turned you down but hey all that is old news for a door leading to a GREAT opprotunity has opened and for that I am so happy for you!!!
This semester I will have finished all my pre-reqs for UC and recieve my Associates of Science degree. However, although I am hoping for the best I am thinking that they will not accept me (as of right now my GPA is 3.8) So I will apply, but YOU have encouraged me to apply to UNC. SO I have a few questions if you do not mind answering. I noticed that I have to get certified as a CNA and then take 4 more classes to apply right? How did you take those remaining 4 classes? I was thinking I would take 2 in the summer on CCConline and the remaining 2 online from UNC campus if that is possible (I live in westminster). What would you reccommend? ok any advice would be awesome! and again....CONGRATS!!
Hi Ms.Dre22,
First off, thank you for the congrats, I appreciate that. :)
Now, congratulations to you on you A.S. I will have my fingers crossed you get into CU. It's a great program, and getting in sooner is always more fun than getting in later! hehe
I think it's a good idea to have a backup plan. Even if you don't have to use it, you won't lose momentum if you do happen to need it. Yes, you are correct that you need 4 additional classes to apply to UNC, plus the CNA certification. The 'nice' thing about taking the extra classes, is that they are entirely relevant to nursing, so it's like you are starting anyway, even if they aren't 'real' nursing classes...if that makes sense.
I took last summer off, but did Biochem and Pathophysiology in the fall. I took them online through ccconline. Biochem was great, I loved it. I would definitely take it online again. Patho through ccconline is a 4 credit class but UNC only requires it to be 3. I would suggest taking it at the UNC campus and I'll explain why in a bit. Since I was only taking those 2 classes, I also took my CNA during the fall at the FRCC campus in Westminster. Easy class, yet interesting. I took it then, so I could take my test in time to prove to UNC when applications came around.
Now, for this spring, I'm currently taking Pharmacology and Nutrition on campus. I was told I could take both online, but heard from a friend to avoid taking the nutrition class online. Well, it doesn't matter how you take it, it still sucks. I HATE this class, and everyone I have talked to does as well. It's not the HWE 100 class that CU accepts, but a Nutrition for Nursing that goes WAY deeper. It's not the class I dislike, nor the teacher herself....it's her tests. They deal with minutiae and just suck. This is the first class I may make a B and be happy with that. lol Now, the pharm class is totally different, it's AWESOME. The teacher is fantastic and I LOVE her. You can take this class online through another U (don't remember the name, but the advisor will have it) but I'm so glad I took it on campus. This brings me back to the Patho class. The prof that teaches pharm, also teaches patho. I have heard good things about that class too - so I would recommend taking patho on campus because it has a great teacher, and has WAY, WAY less work than online classes.
The schedules are set up so you can take Nutrition, pharm and patho all in the same semester and I would highly recommend it. Right now the schedule is Nut on T/Th with Pharm on Tues and Patho on Thurs which makes for a nice balanced schedule and only driving twice a week (I live in Brighton, so I have to commute too).
I hope you could follow all that. I'm still hoping you get into CU, but if you don't and go with UNC, feel free to PM me with any Q's. I'll be glad to help anyway I can. Just for the record. I LOVE UNC!!! I got a scholarship when I transferred in because of my GPA and you should be eligible for it too...so that's a nice bonus!!
Good luck again, I'll watch the boards to see where you get accepted.
SD :)
SD,
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I can't simply thank you enough for taking out the time to explain that to me. I went to UNC for an appointment (that I booked last month sometime) to talk about the program and she mentioned everything you did. This school seems much more easy to get into...I mean if you have the grades then you pretty much have a good chance, I am noticing with CU that you can still have top noch grades but if your essay is not fitting then you can get rejected or vice versa, even then you still don't know what exactly they are looking for. The lady (Lisa) told me how they (UNC) consider both the last 45 credit hours and the overall gpa, I really like that. Currently I have an overall gpa of 3.79 I am taking 4 classes this semester and since we are at the end it is looking like I will have 2 A's and 2 B's so if I calculated correctly my overall gpa is going to fall a bit, but hopefully I can bring it back up when I take those four remaining classes?!! Do you think I should take a few extra classes to bring up my gpa because I am really cutting it close?
If you do not mind me asking, what was your gpa when you were accepted?
CU would be awesome to attend and I still hope I get in but if not, I would be more than happy to attend UNC. I will definitely update my results!
Thanks Again SD!
Andrea
Hi Andrea,
I'm glad I can help. :)
UNC takes not only the last 45 credits into account, but a few select classes are weighed heavier; biochem, Eng 2, AP....they list them in the packet. If you want to improve any grades, I would do those ones since you get more bang for your buck, sort of speak. I had a 4.0 but it may just go the way of the Dodo, thanks to the Nutrition class I'm taking - LOL
A few things I love about UNC: small class sizes, there are 36 ppl in the summer cohort and I'm sure I will know everyone by first name by the time we graduate. Great teachers, small college, I love the architecture and the medical building has a clock tower that still chimes. The latter ones are just romantic, I know. But, I love the smaller school feel. I went to one with 29k students years ago and it was totally different.
When will you be applying to CU? I know how stressful it can be. Try to keep your mind off it after you get it sent in, you'll drive yourself nuts if you don't! Ask me how I know! lol
SD
Sorry, I did not reply sooner, this last semester is really kicking my butt! Anyway, Thanks a million for all your information. Yes, I will be applying to CU this May, I would have turned it in as soon as the application opened but I am just really struggling on my essay so I am hoping that once I graduate May 7th I will have time to clear my mind and just take a week or so to really focus on the essay. I still would love to apply at UNC this December but the fact that I have to take four more classes plus become certified as a CNA is really stressing me...but hey, I really want to become a nurse soon so I will do what I have to do. I am thinking that I might do as you did and take the summer off just to recooperate and celebrate graduating with a degree. ( I have 2 boys ages 4 and 1 years old, and I have been in school since I graduated high school...yea it basically has taken me 4 years to get an A.S:o and I am just a simply tired 22 year old) I know you will be busy, but please post your experience at UNC, I would love to read about how it is going!
Take care,
