UNC Chapel Hill (Spring 2010) January 2010 - Anyone Receive Word?

Published

Just checking, I posted a response in a separate thread, but thought a new thread could hold its own.

I applied to UNC Chapel Hill's Nursing Program for January 2010. BSN Program, not ABSN. Already, I have received two confirmations from students that have received acceptance yesterday into the ABSN program.

1. Has anyone received word about their acceptance into either the ABSN or BSN program?

2. Has anyone received word regarding "no offer" of acceptance? And, if so, what are your plans going forward if you did not receive an offer.

I am obviously anxious and waiting for a response. Just checking to see if anyone else is in the same boat.

Thanks and good luck, everyone! :)

I have a feeling we will need to put down a deposit once the official admissions letter from Undergrad Admissions comes in the mail- I think is ~$100.

FINALLY!!!! I got my letter tonight and I'm on the ABSN waitlist. I'm totally ok with that and have to reply immediately to confirm my spot on the list. It doesn't tell what spot I am on the list, but I'm pleased with it anyway. What a huge weight off my shoulders. I can finally get my life back and stop stalking my mailman.

I'll try to reply to everyone, although a lot of questions were answered.

Regarding the batch mailings. I can confirm groups of mailings. The last were, indeed, sent on Friday. Nursing had already made their decisions, but admissions needed to go through applications as well. I suppose for final approval. Nevertheless, I imagine there are applicants here that will receive a reply by tomorrow.

For BSN, clinicals do not appear to start until the second semester. There will be some competition, however, based on proximity. I imagine Raleigh & Chapel Hill will have first dibs. Though if you live further south, say, Alamance County, then it might be better to focus on that area. If you live in Wake Forest, then maybe focus on that area. Since your clinical days should not fall on a day with classroom instruction, this means you won't have to drive as far on those days. Again, parking may be a bit of a pain. I checked the lots today. They all seemed rather packed except for the outer most park-n-rides. Southern park-n-rides looked good.

As for orientation, whatever date you choose is the day you get to go. That means, the first day will be standing room only, I imagine. Meeting more closely with faculty may be better on other days. The faculty are great, by the way. Quite caring.

Immunizations. Get them done if you haven't. There are a number of vaccines that must be done in a three step process. Some you need two, some three. However, if you have childhood records, that'll will help immensely. As for me, I can't find most of them. So, I'm getting re-immunized. Just finished my first TB (need 2), HepB (need 3 HepB), DTap (need 3 DTP's). Then, I'm running titer on Varicella and MMR. Hopefully, I'll show Ab's on those. Else, that will mean I'll be getting 2 Varicella's (ChixPox) and 2 MMR's. Lastly, a seasonal influenza shot.

By the way, a good quick way to go for some of your vaccinations is the minute clinic @ CVS Pharmacy. 20 bucks per injection for TB tests (some insurance doesn't cover that, mine did not). They do a number of the others. However, you could check with your family physician.

Haven't heard of a deposit at all. I think when it's time to register, we simply pay what we need to pay. But all things considered, a hundred dollar deposit is really just a drop in the bucket.

As for study, I spent a good deal of time there at UNC having lunch and checking out the facilities. Lots of places for quiet study at the end of the day. I'm interested in study groups with two or more people, so let me know if you are interested. I'm a dedicated studier, and getting A's along with knowing the material is a number one priority.

Congrats, nonetheless, Carolina on the waitlisted letter. Purely a suggestion, but you might want to shoot them a thank you note to get your name on the radar. Even with waitlists, you never know how they will pick someone from that list. A goal oriented applicant might not be such a bad thing. ;) Good luck with getting chosen.

Lastly, I just want to let you know that nearly 500-600 people applied to the program this time around. That could be a record. So, getting chosen or waitlisted meant you all did rather well. Even those that did not make it, you were competing amongst a large number of people. And, still, there's no guarantee that a denial letter will not turn into an offer. It has happened before. Stay positive. I imagine a number of out of state applicants will be unable to attend at such short notice. One never knows. Just don't forget about the December 22nd deadline. Still apply again after finding out where you stood on the list of applicants. You're only looking at a May entrance. Not far off at all.

Best of success and congratulations to all.

:yeah:

Wow, Great information C2CNurse. Thanks for taking the time to type it all! I don't have insurance but luckily my job will reimburse me for most of the vaccinations. Again congrats everyone and good luck to all awaiting notification.

NYCGyrl- The Wake County or Durham County health department will do the vaccinations for free. You just have to call to make an appt! It saved a bunch of co-pays for me since I am getting my Hep B done now.

I will look into that. I definitely need the Hep vac series because it was optional for the program I am currently in. I think I'm up to date on the rest but I have to double check.

i thought durham county health charged for those things. have you confirmed this, since this would be great? although i have already paid for a lot of those yesterday, i still have follow-ups i would like to save money on. :)

update:

i called both wake forest & durham county. two different animals, really. nevertheless...

wake forest does offer some free vaccination services such as dtap (free to anyone living in any county). mmr possibly considering qualifying questionaire responses (this also goes to the hepatitis b vaccination

durham county offers the following:

the immunization clinic offers free vaccines, which are mandated by law, to children 18 years of age and under. vaccines are available to adult individuals age 19 and over for an applicable fee, with the exception of tetorifice diptheria vaccine which could be free. measles, mumps, and rubella (mmr) and hepatitis a/ hepatitis b combined vaccines are available at no charge to adults that meet the criteria for state-supplied vaccine.

-hepatitis a $+/-75 (price not current on website)

-measles, mumps and rubella (a combination vaccine) $42 (possibly free)

-varicella (chickenpox) $+/-85 (price not current on website)

-hepatitis b $+/-75

contact: immunization clinic: 919-560-7608

access: durham county health department, 8:30-11:00, 1:00-4:00, t-th

i pulled some from the websites and some from conversations with staff. however, if momofthreeboys can confirm more information regarding the free stuff, that would be great. i know i must have spent $150 yesterday just dealing with tbtest, hepb, dtap, and titers. i'll probably follow-up next month with durham or wake for the dtap, mmr (if titer shows negative), and hepb's.

Sorry C2C-

I got a polio (needed it for Duke) and a TDap for free at Wake County. I thought they did them at Durham County too...weird. I already had positive titers for Varicella and MMR. I got the Hep B vaccine and the flu shot at the Minute Clinic without a co-pay- I guess Blue Cross Blue Shield covers immunizations so they didn't charge me one.

Sorry for the confusion.

I looked at the cost of attendance and it allocated $850 or something for immunizations, background check, health assessment and I can see why!

Does anyone know how many Hep B we need before matriculation? I know I can get a 2nd shot before Jan. but not the third one.

By the book, three. However, two should cover you (second shot 30 days after first), with the third sometime in the sixth month following the first. UNC won't inhibit matriculation if you only have two. Else, a lot of us aren't going to UNC in January.

:crying2:

Thanks everyone again for the Congrats!!!

And TeeVee, I haven't made my decision yet....They will not let me defer even under my circumstances...She told me that good news was that I can reapply for May, and I am an excellent candidate for this program, and my application is exceptional...But they could not guarantee me a spot for May...and I don't know if I should take the chance...

SO any advice from anyone?? I mean since my dad was diagnosed, he is doing really good...And I did get an extension to give them my decision...We are waiting until my dad's pet scan results on the 1st to make my decision...I just don't know what to do...It is just really hard...

But Congrats to everyone that got in or waitlisted...

I would love to be part of a study group if I decide to go in January...and I live in Apex, so I can carpool with people too!!!

Talk to you all soon!!!

ReneeSuzy,

Just wanted to say congrats and give you my support. When I was in college the first time, I had challenging circumstances to deal with and school really helped me get through it. I am one of those people that deals with stress well this way- others don't at all. You have to decide if school would be a good thing in your life right now! I had two grandparents get sick with cancer and my dad was killed (active duty military) all in my freshmen year of college. I really needed school at the time to help me focus on something else ( and I still had time to be with my family). My sister handled it differently- she took a year off from school.

I really have a lot of empathy for you-

And whatever decision you make- feel good about it!
