UNC Chapel Hill applicants

Published

I applied to UNC Chapel Hill's 24-month BSN program for May '08. I was told by someone that admissions notifications will be sent out anytime between mid-March and April 15th (which incidentally is not a whole lot of time considering one would start the program approximately one month later).

Anyway, I know of one person who has already received their notification. I myself have not and am therefore getting more anxious as each day passes. I was hoping other people on this forum might be in the same boat as myself and can tell me whether or not they have heard anything from UNC?

Thanks!

No, it is pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to meet with anyone from there face to face. I emailed and got a phone appointment with the director of admissions. I hope you get in, but even if you are waitlisted, get that appointment with the admissions director. They try to tell you wait and see if you get off the waitlist, but my advice is to go ahead and get it.

Thanks so much for that information. I will definitely take your advice if I am in that situation.

Do you think they gave you honest feedback on your chances of reapplying? I was wondering if they are straightforward about one's chances if they reapply?

Definitely. I've heard if you're just not qualified they will tell you straight up that you need to look into community college and stop wasting your time, basically. The director of admissions told me that it was only that I hadn't completed that prereq. so complete that, do well in it, and in the additional essay where you can write about things you've done to enhance your application this time around if you are a reapplicant to put that I spoke with her.

Got my letter todat. I got waitlisted :( I guess I'll apply again for Jan.

I know how that feels :( I was so sad when I go waitlisted last time I applied. I live so close to UNC, I wonder why I haven't gotten my letter yet?!?!

Sorry to hear about that. I can imagine how you feel. I bet it was just a matter of not having your prereqs met. If you don't get in this round, you'll get in come Jan, which is not as far away as it might seem.

Hope u don't mind me asking, but did they give you any indication on where u fall on the waitlist? I just got a message from a friend/classmate and that person was also waitlisted.

I did not receive anything from UNC today. I have this feeling in the gut of my stomach that I will not be getting in. I just hope it's a matter of not having the prereqs complete.

Any of u guys UNC-CH alumni? I wonder it that is any advantage?

Thanks.

I am not a UNC alum. I am THINKING I will get in because when I spoke with the admissions director she all but assured me I would get in, so I think my hopes are waaaaaay up which probably isn't smart because if I don't get in, I will be really upset.

I don't know anyone in the last 2 years who has gotten in without having their prereqs. completed, so if you're waitlisted, just get those done and reapply and I'm sure you'll get in.

From what you are saying I would feel confident too if I was in your situation. Sounds very promising.

So, in the last two years no one that you know with completed prereqs has gotten in? Guess that pretty much sums up my chances. Are these alot of people whom u are referring too?

Keeping my fingers crossed for u.

Don't get down on yourself, you never know until you get that letter in the mail! There have been 5 people I know, plus myself, who have applied without completed prerequisites and all either were waitlisted or denied. Really, they should just make it a requirement to have them completed in order to apply if they're not going to take anybody without them, but I guess they want that app. fee.

I didn't get any info on waitlist ranking - just an offer of a position on it. I'm not holding my breath, though. I'm just gonna complete Micro and apply again. I guess it'll be good to take this time to take a breather between classes. I'm definitely going to speak with someone in admissions though - just to ask.

To all of you who were given offers of "waitlisting" - CALL the admissions office. I too applied to UNC a couple of years ago and was first denied admission (I had accepted admission to Duke, but I was curious anyway) - I wasn't even WAITLISTED, despite a 3.8 undergrad GPA, "cum laude" on my diploma, and a 4.0 GPA in all prereqs. So I called the admissions office to find out why my application was considered, to quote UNC, "deficient" and was eventually connected to the director - who proceeded to ask me if I had volunteered with hospitals while I was in high school (GOOD LORD, I graduated from high school in 1990). I told her I had, but that it wasn't on my application because the information was probably unverifiable after fourteen years - but what WAS on my application, and I pointed this out to her, was that I had volunteered eight hours or more a week at the Duke University Hospital Peds Bone Marrow Transplant unit while working 40 hours a week and taking prereqs (which I was still finishing, and UNC knew this). She put me on hold and then came back on the phone, apologizing and saying that I should have been offered a slot - and proceeded to offer me one on the phone. I thanked her, and after we hung up, I got an email from the school confirming the director's offer. I politely declined it.

Essentially, I do tell people that I didn't get into UNC but got into Duke, because it's true. But it was because UNC screwed up.

So if your heart's set on UNC, CALL THEM. And good luck to all of you; I'm in my first job now and I love this profession. Nursing school is the best decision I've ever made - honestly. There's life on the other side of the diploma and it's more rewarding than you can imagine.

And yes - I may be a Blue Devil, but I support the ACC in any tourney, so GO HEELS!

Wow I am absolutely floored right now. I wasn't even waitlisted- I was flat out denied. I was told the only reason I was waitlisted was for my prerequisite not being completed by application time last time I applied. I am stunned. I had an undergraduate GPA of 3.56, a 3.8 science GPA, volunteer experience, etc. I just cannot believe it. I felt CERTAIN I would get in.
