UNC-CH ABSN for 2011

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Just to get a good idea of where I stand when I apply to UNC-CH's ABSN program I have a couple questions, if someone could answer. First, I am graduating with a psych degree, and a child dev. minor with a 3.5 gpa. What is the average gpa that UNC normally admits? Second, I know volunteer work is important to any admission process, however, I've always been involved in Club Lacrosse and Crew, and never had time to volunteer besides tutoring my teammates. Does anyone know how heavily they weigh volunteer work?

Thanks!!!

p.s. all of my pre-req's are completed.

I haven't applied yet but I've been planning on applying for January matriculation. I have a feeling UNC will have a pretty large applicant pool for the spring with all the cuts, but I'm sure some of the people that applied for the summer decided to go ahead with another program instead of deferring. I'm just ready to have my application in and know the outcome :)

Hi!

I'm confused. If they are deferring everyone who applied for the summer to the spring (if you want to be deferred that is) are they still accepting applications for the spring? We were told we'd be given our admission decision April 15.

But if you're right and they are still going to take applications then it's definitely going to be a larger pool. I wonder how they are doing that.

I'm waiting to find out from UCLA this week- yikes!

good luck with your applications!

I was under the impression that they were still accepting applications for spring in addition to the applications which were deferred from summer. I'm honestly not sure how they are dealing with the transition though, so I may be wrong. I'm hopefully going to the next informational session; I'm sure they will clarify the situation then.

Good luck with UCLA, that's really exciting!

If you are deciding between UNC and Duke, GO TO DUKE. I am a UNC student and I am very disappointed in the program. The accelerated program is 18 credits the first semester whereas Duke's is 13 (so much more manageable). The rest of the semesters are similar. The professors/administration leave much to be desired. If you have two professors giving contradictory information (which you will) and you address this issue with one of the professors, someone will quickly tell you not to make waves or cause problems. UNC tries to make the program WAY harder than it needs to be and they do so by piling on the course load (10 chapters in one week for Pharmacology anyone?) and asking subjective exam questions where you will not be able to find the answer in any textbook or class notes (no, I'm not talking about application questions, I'm talking about questions that are based on someone's opinion). Lastly, the grading scale is ridiculous. An A is 95 and above and an 85 is a B-... so if you're competing against a duke student for a grad school position, their 3.7 GPA will look a lot better than your 3.3 GPA. Yes, even if you were a straight A student and you work REALLY hard, it is highly unlikely that you will be getting straight A's (that is unless you can read the professor's minds). My friends that go to Duke don't share any of the sentiments of my UNC classmates. They actually have time for a social life too which is nice! Clinicals are much better than the first semester, but again, that grading scale can really hurt you when applying for grad school.

Wow- thanks for the heads up. I already had a funny feeling about UNC simply based on the people I spoke to. Everyone at Duke has been amazing but the people at UNC were not as nice...stupid I know but hey maybe something to it right?

Wish me luck...I was waitlisted at UCLA and second rounded at Duke.....dang it!

Anyone receive any acceptance from UNC?

Anyone receive any acceptance from UNC?

They said we would be notified April 15. I think it comes as certified mail.....soon!

I'm confused then, because I recently received an acceptance letter to the Jan 2012 cohort....

That's weird. All I know is that I applied for the summer program but because of the budget cuts they said they would defer my application to the spring and that I would know by April 15 through certified mail. Did you apply for summer but defer to spring?

Yup, I did. The letter said that the online decision will not be posted until April 15th. I do live in NC, I don't know if you are from out of state. The letter wasn't from certified mail, but it was about a 5x7 size envelope with all UNC stuff and the option reply letter wants me to pick an orientation date (thats not until may) and I need to reply by April 1st. I am just confused because I havent heard anyone who defer to have received a letter (then again I don't know anyone who has applied).

congratulations then! that's great!

I live in California, when did you receive the letter?

I am waitlisted at UCLA and Duke so now all that remains is UNC. I hope I get something soon because the wait is killing me!!! Congrats again!!
