U.S.A. Maryland

Hey!

Anyone planning on applying to UMSON for Spring of '13?

Is anyone currently volunteering at Univ of Md Hosp by chance??

Yes, I am volunteering at UMMC and loving every second of it! Are you thinking of volunteering there, SB113? It's an amazing place!

eodenwal, I sent you a PM (check your inbox!), I already am volunteering at UMMC!!

Everyone who has applied in the past: I am really confused about the essay. Is it just a standard personal statement? Anyone know how long it should be?

I really wish someone would be kind enough to SHARE with us their actual essay! I am so torn on the darn thing and not sure in which direction I should go with it...if that makes sense :)

Your essay is incredibly important. In addition to showing you can write with NO spelling or grammar errors, it should show the admissions committee why they should pick you. It should answer any questions they may have about academic blemishes. It should show that you really do understand what you are in for in both the profession and nursing school and that you are totally committed to succeeding. The length should be about two pages double spaced. Imagine that you are on the admissions committee looking for candidates who will do what it takes to graduate. Let your passion for the profession show but be sincere. Nurses are, justifiably, very proud to be nurses. Statements that you are in it for the money, job security, or you are really a medical doctor wannabe who is "settling" are not viewed favorably. Do some soul searching. If you cannot write this, are you really sure about it? I do apologize for being so blunt, but it really does matter. A killer essay can and does make all the difference. Best of luck!

Grey Lady, thank you for the advice about the essay!

I just submitted my application...now the wait begins. I'm already so excited and nervous! Has anyone looked around Baltimore for apartments/housing? It's overwhelming, I don't know where to start. Anyone have any information on which apartments around the school are decent? Thanks!

Eodenwal,

I'm not familiar with housing in Baltimore. There are reasonable housing options in Glen Burnie and in Severn which is about 15-25 minutes away from Baltimore. Didn't know if your interested in living in other cities but thought I should put that out there.

Hi all! All of my materials are finally in so now I just have to wait. I've already heard back from two other schools that I applied to and had to put a deposit down, but UMB is my first choice by far. I just finished my first bachelors over the summer and am not sure how this might affect my application because I've heard from some people that their school preferences those who do not already have a bachelors. I worked hard on my application and prereqs, and managed to do really well on the teas so I've got my fingers crossed!

Im not applying yet but i live near the school. Glen Burnie is 15-20 minutes away but the traffic would suck getting into the city. If you drive you have to consider parking and if you take the MTA the commute is a couple of hours. You are better off getting a place downtown. There are some housing available for students only but i dont know exactly what they are called.

There's a pretty comprehensive list on the UMB website here: UM Housing Local Housing

I actually live in Severn and it takes me 15-20 minutes max with traffic to get to downtown Baltimore. 295 N. straight down takes me to the school. From Glen Burnie you take 97 South which is easily accessible, take 100 Ellicott City and get on 295 N and get to the school in no time. If anyone is considering other housing options other than Baltimore in the surrounding cities such as Glen Burnie just allow 10 extra minutes. Going into Baltimore in the morning isn't bad. Coming home may take a little longer during rush hour. It all depends on how safe you feel with your selected location and if the commute will save you money on housing or not. Good luck to everyone looking for housing.
