UMD CNL FALL 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi guys! I know it's a little early... but just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying to the UMD CNL program for fall of 2018. I just submitted my application!

congrats all.. I am assuming since you guys submitted early you are of the first to hear back.. A long 4 months.. my anxiety is through the roof.. my application is still on complete ready for review. Any insight on how long your application was on complete ready for review.

Hang in there! I think mine was ready for review for at least 6 weeks or so, until it became (I think I have this right) committee ready. I do think that they review these in waves, depending on when you got your application in and it was deemed complete.

Yes, I am trying to. Thanks for the information. Again Good Luck on the Interview!!!!

ltaylor19, do you mind talking about why UMD is your top choice? What do you see as the major differences (other than price, which I know is a big one!) between Maryland and Hopkins?

Hey All,

Best of luck to all those that are applying.

Curious to know how people are planning on financing their education? Are most people going to take out loans?

Hello,

I will be taking our Federal Loans. No way I can afford out of pocket.

Yeh, that seems to be one of the only options. There must be other ways though. During the open house in November, my impression was that many of the current students are doing the same.

Have you received notification for an interview yet? Some cohorts have heard back while others like myself are still waiting for news. My status is complete and ready for review. They seems to be reviewing applications in waves.

Yep, was just notified today. I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks Amazing!! Congrats!

I was invited for an interview as well today! I've scheduled it for next week but I haven't received the link for the writing sample. Has anyone else?

@JullietMei, I was accepted to Hopkins but after touring the school and doing some research, I just felt like UMD was a better fit for me for a few reasons. Cost mainly (factoring in my scholarship from Hopkins, it's still a ~$55k difference on tuition alone - I'm an in-state student by the way). I also like the idea of a CNL career to pursue maybe a few years down the line, and I don't think I'd be eligible to take the CNL exam if I graduated from Hopkins (don't quote me on that). Other small reasons also factor into it, like UMD's campus is in a nicer area of the city and their building is more updated. Those things weren't as important to me, so it really came down to cost. I also did my undergrad at University of Maryland so I'm a little biased!

But yes, Hopkins is an AMAZING school, and I think I would be happy there! It's just personal preference. If anyone decides to go there, I'm sure they will love it! I have friends in both programs and they seem to like what they're doing!

I did have one question that I haven't been able to get a clear answer on regarding this program. Completion of the program earns a Masters degree - but, in what specifically? It sounds like it's not in nursing, but is it a general masters degree?

Also: do you know if, with this degree from UMD SON, one could complete a post masters certificate program to enter into advanced practice nursing (FNP)?

Or would you need a Masters in Nursing? Trying to get things straight and the wording from the website is a bit vague. Any idea?

Thanks!

MSN degree is a professional degree offered by a professional school. The MS degree is a degree awarded by the entire university.

MSN is usually more oriented toward practice while the MS is more oriented toward scholarship research and teaching, requiring a thesis, a foreign language course.
