Hi guys! I know it's a little early... but just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying to the UMD CNL program for fall of 2018. I just submitted my application!
I was invited for an interview as well today! I've scheduled it for next week but I haven't received the link for the writing sample. Has anyone else?
@JullietMei, I was accepted to Hopkins but after touring the school and doing some research, I just felt like UMD was a better fit for me for a few reasons. Cost mainly (factoring in my scholarship from Hopkins, it's still a ~$55k difference on tuition alone - I'm an in-state student by the way). I also like the idea of a CNL career to pursue maybe a few years down the line, and I don't think I'd be eligible to take the CNL exam if I graduated from Hopkins (don't quote me on that). Other small reasons also factor into it, like UMD's campus is in a nicer area of the city and their building is more updated. Those things weren't as important to me, so it really came down to cost. I also did my undergrad at University of Maryland so I'm a little biased!
But yes, Hopkins is an AMAZING school, and I think I would be happy there! It's just personal preference. If anyone decides to go there, I'm sure they will love it! I have friends in both programs and they seem to like what they're doing!
I did have one question that I haven't been able to get a clear answer on regarding this program. Completion of the program earns a Masters degree - but, in what specifically? It sounds like it's not in nursing, but is it a general masters degree? Also: do you know if, with this degree from UMD SON, one could complete a post masters certificate program to enter into advanced practice nursing (FNP)?
Or would you need a Masters in Nursing? Trying to get things straight and the wording from the website is a bit vague. Any idea?
Thanks!
MSN degree is a professional degree offered by a professional school. The MS degree is a degree awarded by the entire university.
MSN is usually more oriented toward practice while the MS is more oriented toward scholarship research and teaching, requiring a thesis, a foreign language course.
