UMass Worcester GEP Fall 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone! I didn't see a UMass Worcester GEP Fall 2019 thread so I thought I would start one. I submitted my application in September. The last I heard was they were going to start to review the applications they have in hand at the end of September and would at some point start extending interviews. In a past info session, they said they have a rolling admissions process. I haven't heard anything more since then, so I'm just sitting tight.

Can anyone who was deciding between different schools elaborate on why they chose UMass Med over the others? I currently have a deposit down at MGH IHP and am on the waitlist at UMass Med, but just received a notice that I will most likely get off the waitlist and offered a spot soon. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey! I had to choose between Simmons and UMass and had a really tough time, but ultimately chose UMass because of several factors:

1. The relationship UMass med has with the community and surrounding hospitals/clinics. From the info session it seemed that these places would be familiar with our accelerated degree which would make finding work easier.

2. I loved my interview and felt very comfortable at UMass and like they would be very supportive.

3. The ability to get an extra year of experience/training through the doctorate year and the possibility to teach later on.

I believe everyone on the waitlist received the same email from Diane.

Hello! I had to choose between UMass Med, MGH IHP, Simmons, BC, Northeastern and Regis. UMass Med and Simmons were my top two choices and I ended up choosing UMass for a variety of reasons:

1. It was the only program that offered the direct-entry DNP. All the other programs are direct-entry MSN programs. (Though BC has the option for this incoming class to be grandfathered into their DNP program they will be offering the next class. But I didn't like the uber accelerated nature of BC and not being able to work as an RN to gain bedside clinical experience.) I would like to teach at some point in the future and also work in some form of nursing leadership. The nursing leaders at the hospitals I work at said go for the DNP if you can, for what I want to do.

2. It offers the acute care track, which is what I'm interested in, and it's the only program that seems to offer specialty tracks like oncology and palliative care.

3. I like how it is structured so you can work your required 1,000 RN hours from your 2nd year onward, so that by the time you graduate as an NP you have a few years of RN experience under your belt.

4. I know people who went to UMass Med for med school and nursing school and they have all had really positive experiences and felt they received a quality education at a great ROI, given how less expensive it is compared to the other Boston schools.

5. Many of my MGH contacts (nurses/NPs and other senior leaders), including some who lecture at MGH IHP mentioned that the program seemed disorganized and suggested that if I had other options to consider going elsewhere. I also heard they don't tend to hire the nurses from those programs from one person, but I wouldn't put too much stake in that because I do know a couple of NPs who direct entry grads from MGH IHP and they got hired at MGH. However, these NPs said they did not feel prepared after graduating from the program to practice independently, so they went on to do a residency/fellowship program to bolster their knowledge/skills. I guess I just wasn't hearing a whole lot of great things about it lately so I opted not to choose MGH IHP. In the past, I was all about MGH IHP until I really started chatting with various folks in the field.

Of course, take everything above with a grain of salt, as this is just my personal take on it and how I decided based on the input I was hearing from people I talked to, but everyone is different and some programs will suit others better. I also think a large part of it will be what you make of it, too!

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but when you guys applied were any of taking prerequisites and be considered and have an interview? I want to apply ASAP after the app opens but I wont be done with my 2 remaining prereqs until end of sept. Is it possible to be accepted based on contingency that you pass the prereqs?

cheers and congrats to the upcoming class!

Hi! It’s okay to have outstanding prerequisite, I had 1. But I think that they don’t like to see more than 2 so they can get an accurate idea of your grades! I am starting in the fall and just finished my final prerequisite 2 months ago!

Thanks! It is totally understandable if you do not want to but would you be willing to share with me your admission stats? I am a little worried about my GPA/GRE but I do have IMO quite a bit of experience.

Cheers.

Hi! I’m entering into my first year this fall and wanted to let you know that my Gpa wasn’t that’s great (3.3) when I applied and I’m not sure what my exact GRE score was, but I think it was only slightly above average. I hear that it’s a competitive program to get into, so I think it must have been my past experience and personal statement! Good luck with everything!!

Sure! I had a 3.9 GPA and scored a 160 reading and a 161 math on the GRE. I was on the opposite hand and I had no experience at all. They made it clear that they look at the whole applicant. If you are lacking in one area you can make up for it in another. I also made sure that I demonstrated in the essay that I had a clear understanding of all the roles/responsibilities of an NP! ?

I'm a prospective student looking into applying to the GEP program at UMass. Does anyone know where I can find stats on the program's acceptance rate and/or demographics. I was just wondering if anyone knows how competitive the program is. Thanks!

Just submitted for 2020 last week. I mailed my checklist and notary form in, does Diane or anyone from admissions contact me saying they received it? Also I’m assuming they don’t review the app before NursingCAS verifies it right?

thanks.

I started a UMASS gep 2020 page for students applying if you want to post there! From the info session I hear they have around 150-200 apps/year, interview around 80%, and accept around 40-50 students from those interviewed so it’s a small class size. The admissions team looks at every application and is very into the whole applicant view approach. Since it is a direct entry program they said that some students don’t have any health care experience or years of health care experience.
