Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Wondering who else has applied for the Fall 2021 start date for the ABSN program at UMASS Boston. Also looking for insight into this program from current students. Thanks!

Congrats to those who are accepted! Is anyone else still waiting?

I still haven’t heard back. Has anyone else not heard back yet? I’m am a bit nervous because I see that a lot of people found out that they got in already.

I haven’t heard back either ! Are you an internal applicant?

I got accepted to the fall 2021 cohort. Good luck to everyone as you check, and congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!

@Kelsanne You’re right, Boston itself is very expensive, along with a number of the surrounding areas. I live about an hour outside of the city and don’t plan to relocate for school. I think that’s doable as long as you have a car. I don’t know if your asking thoughts on distance, or thoughts on towns to relocate to?

If you’re asking if it’s doable to be well outside the city yes it is, with a car, knowing you’ll have to deal with traffic (in my opinion). If your asking for neighborhood recommendations, IMO, that can be tricky, because neighborhoods vary greatly, but maybe someone else has a better sense!

@Sonya Samborthanks for sharing your thoughts! I have a car, and I think anywhere up to 1.5 hrs away would be doable? Problem is, rent seems to be steep in most of the surrounding areas!

It’s really hard to know how often we need to be on campus.. Im also thinking for study groups and meeting classmates, it’d be nice to be relatively close. But I also don’t want to spend a fortune doing so! I’m glad I have a few extra months to figure out what I want to do. Would be interested in hearing more thoughts on this!

@Kelsanne my partner and I are moving from northern California. We are also wanting to move somewhere cheaper outside of Boston . We were even thinking out of state areas like providence, rhode Island or New hampshire? It would be awesome to live close to other students for study groups. I am not big fan of Zoom..

Anyone else planning on living outside the city?

@Kelsanne I think whatever you ultimately decide you’re comfortable driving/doing that will work for your budget/life will be “doable” LOL.

My sense about how often we’ll have to be on campus (from students and staff) is that we’re not getting a hard and fast answer because it is really varied, both from student to student, and potentially semester to semester. I know due to Covid they have made a number of adjustments to the structure of how often students are at clinicals. Most recently I heard that they were ~about~ once a week. Maybe you have them every Tuesday, maybe one week you have it on a Wednesday and Saturday, and skip the next week. But like I said, the staff seem to be making no promises about how your clinicals will be structured. I don’t know if anyone else has heard something different...

As for housing have you thought about reaching out to the school?  I don’t know if UMB has it, or if you’d be open to it, but some schools have message board type things of students going in on houses/apartments together. At the very least they might be able to point you in the direction of some areas to look at if you tell them your requirements?

(sorry I ramble!)

@Kelsanne I live in NH about an hour to Boston on a good day without too much traffic. I believe Umass Boston has a facebook housing page where people post apartments for rent. The rents definitely cheaper the further north of Boston you go.

General housing advice for anyone who thinks they will rely on public transit while in Boston, I'd check out Quincy for rooms. It's a pretty far ride to downtown on the Red Line (relatively speaking), but it's only a few stops to the JFK/UMass stop. Plus, MGH is on the Red Line and buses from Andrew Sq can take you to BMC and the Longwood Medical Area, which covers a lot of the places in Boston proper where clinicals might happen.

Finding rooms can be tough, but I generally go through craigslist or facebook (and watch out for scams) and have had decent luck. Just be prepared for old buildings, absentee landlords, and having first/last/security and possible brokers fee up front.

If you want your own apartment close to Boston, well... good luck.

@ashleyowen that’s awesome! I moved back east from Tahoe to start my prereqs just before covid hit. Will you start this fall? I think I’ll end up somewhere north of Boston because I love the mountains. But I’ve spent some time in providence and love it there! Really hope to be close to some classmates but we’ll see I guess! Anyone know how parking is on campus? Assuming we pay for a parking pass?

@kelsanne Very cool another Norcal girl. ? Yeah I will be in the fall co-hort. The mountains would be nice. I have some understanding of the area, but I don't think we will really know where we will land until we are out there. We can't do an apartment with our big dog so we will definitely be commuting.
