UK Staff nurse to US RN - is it possible?

Published

Hello everyone

I am a staff nurse with 8 years experience in trauma and orthopaedics who has a BSc in Adult Nursing. I’m revisiting the option of immigrating to the USA - we would be settling in Pennsylvania - my other half already has a job lined up for there. It’s all pretty negative so far all the info I’m finding on transition for UK nurse to USA RN as our degree doesn’t appear to transfer due to not enough/no hours experience in OBGYN/Paeds ect.

Is there anyway to make up these hours? Does anyone from the UK have experience in this? I see they also have LVP/LVN in the US and it appears almost equivalent to Staff Nurses here in the UK - would it be worth while even looking into one of those jobs instead of an RN?

I’m finding this all quite stressful it just seems almost impossible and when the move is depending on your situation it’s definitely a lot of pressure!

Thanks in advance!

Hi ScottishNurse22

Thank you so much for your message that really gives me hope.

I really hope it all goes well with Pennsylvania state. Have you tried reaching out to any of the agencies? I.e ogrady peyton and worldwide healthstaff solutions. You have so much experience I'm sure they'd be able to help. I think they have ways and ties with the nursing boards so even if they you don't register with Pennsylvania initially, they'd be able to endorse you there.

Bestest of luck

Hi thanks for the reply. The issue I have is they won't really entertain me until I have my CGFNS CES report generated. I've tried a couple of agencies, including thornbury US (I work for their sister company in the UK) and they have said come back once the CGFNS have completed your report - probably just in case I don't meet the requirements so it's not a waste of their time if that makes sense

This thread is so helpful.  I have applied to NYBON and am still waiting for a response on whether or not my UK Adult Nursing degree is acceptable to then go on and take the NCLEX.  My plan is to apply by endorsement to PA or NC (now that I know another UKRN has been successful there!). I will keep updating as I go along and ask that others please share their journey as well...the good bad and ugly but hopefully Good!

Would like to know if any UK nurses have used anything other than CGFNS and had success. I'm in my finial year of Adult Nursing Msc and want to move upon graduation. Thanks in advance

Yes! I used IEE for the NCBON and I was completely evaluated in 5 days. The evaluation companies you are able to use will be detailed on the states BON website. Most will have CGFNS along with another option so once you decide which state you're going to apply to check their website

Do you now the hours that NCBON requires for paeds, maternal and psych?

The NCBON told me there are no specific quantity of hours just evidence of hours in each speciality. E.g. For my assessment I had 5 hours in theoretical obs/gyn and 30hr clinical and it was still fine so definitely email the BON and find out whether the same for your intended state.

One important thing for NCBON, you have to have a SSN before you can apply for NCLEX testing. Im a new green card holder already in NC.  So its not like Texas and I think NY where you can apply without a SSN.

Hi Everyone,

I would just like to encourage every UK RN trying to do the move to being a US RN that it can be DONE.

I have just received my CES Report exactly two month after I paid for the report to be done. Although, I paid for the expedited review.

The major boost I had was my A & E placement I think. I was able to use those hours for the areas we usually are deficient in.

Congratulations!! Which state did you apply through?

Hi Guys,

seeing all your replies is giving me hope!
I'm hoping to go and live with my partner California and complete the NCLEX prior to going out there. The only issue I've got is that to apply to the CABON I need a SSN or a ITIN number which I clearly don't have and an ITIN is hard to get so just wondering if anyone else has applied to Cali here and been successful or have any tips?
I've just received my university transcripts as I'm a Registered Children's nurse I was worried, however my transcripts show 2/3 semesters a year were general nursing theory lectures and I did complete spoke placements in each field of obstetrics/adult/mental health etc. So I'm really hopeful in that sense.

Hi Guys,

I recently moved to NJ, USA from UK. I did my degree in BSc in Adult Nursing. I decide to pursue my RN license here. I did the CGFNS CES report which stated I had 0 hours in Maternal Nursing, Children and Psychiatric. The report was submitted to NJBON but they said they need those clinical hours in order for me to be given AAT to sit the NCLEX. I am not sure what else I can do? I do not think any schools would allow me to do just those clinical areas. I would appreciate if you guys can help or advise.

Hi, so apparently you can go to a community college in the US and are able to top up just for certain hours that you're missing. I may have the same issue but with adult hours.
