UK nurse registration for Ontario

So, I moved to Ontario 8 years ago from the UK. I was an RN Diploma trained nurse there.  Because of everything I heard I only applied to be assessed for my RPN- that was a mistake.  I’m now interested in trying to become an RN in Ontario.
 

I recently was readmitted to the NMC as we were thinking of moving back but I don’t think that will happen now, but it does allow me to return home to practice so I can have a recent RN experience if I apply again.  Does anyone know how much recent work experience you need to have to be accepted by NNAS/CNO?

Also, since I will need a BSCN is it better to do an online British university course prior to applying? Or should I get recent practice, apply and be prepared to go to York University, Ontario if I can get a place?

Wondering if anyone has any recent experience with this and can advise?

Are you in Ontario now and have you been working as an RPN? 

You would need to get your BSN and if you are going to work in Canada you should  get your BSN there.

I did the RPN-RN Bridging and some of my classmates were IENs. Few IENs managed to meet the NNAS/CNO standards and most had gaps requiring them to go back to school.

Not sure about NNAS but CNO needed evidence of nursing practice within 3 years & no specific hours on this.

Some IENs who got their RPN registration ended up doing the RPN-RN bridge because they will graduate with BScN. Unlike for those who passed the NNAS/CNO RN asssessment who got RN Diploma title. (They cannot apply for managerial role unless going back to school to get their BScN).

I didn’t have BSN and registered in Canada, but it was way back in 2008. Things have changed but I would suggest trying, they will tell you if you need to make up nursing hours or need to do a return to work course. I did my BSN a few years ago now through Dundee university and had no problem with my college when I declared it.

Thanks for the reply.  So you took an online top up degree? Have you had any issues with employers not recognizing it? 
 

There is now a route that you can take to get registered with the CNO.  It’s crazy and I can’t believe the woman I spoke to at the CNO recommended it honestly.  But if you apply with the New York State board, the New York board will put you forward for the NCLEX.  Ontario will recognize a pass from the NCLEX as comparable along with recent experience.  So theoretically, I could go home and work for a few weeks, sit and pass the NCLEX, register with NNAS/CNO and then do the online degree.  Hugely convoluted way to do it.

But the other option is 20 months away from home and the kids doing the BSCN bridging course at a cost of starting at $16k.

I haven’t had any problems getting both my employer and college of nursing recognizing my degree.

I haven’t heard that about CNO but when I applied many years ago we still sat the CRNE. NCLEX was a couple of years later

In order to sit for NCLEX, my friend who is IEN applied for the State of New York and I believe any US State that doesn't need SSN for license. After, she can just forward her NCLEX result to NNAS.
