  1. Silverdragon, Thanks for the reply. So you took an online top up degree? Have you had any issues with employers not recognizing it? There is now a route that you can take to get registered with the CNO. It’s crazy and I can’t believe the woman I spoke to at the CNO recommended it honestly. But if you apply with the New York State board, the New York board will put you forward for the NCLEX. Ontario will recognize a pass from the NCLEX as comparable along with recent experience. So theoretically, I could go home and work for a few weeks, sit and pass the NCLEX, register with NNAS/CNO and then do the online degree. Hugely convoluted way to do it. But the other option is 20 months away from home and the kids doing the BSCN bridging course at a cost of starting at $16k. ?
  2. So, I moved to Ontario 8 years ago from the UK. I was an RN Diploma trained nurse there. Because of everything I heard I only applied to be assessed for my RPN- that was a mistake. I’m now interested in trying to become an RN in Ontario. I recently was readmitted to the NMC as we were thinking of moving back but I don’t think that will happen now, but it does allow me to return home to practice so I can have a recent RN experience if I apply again. Does anyone know how much recent work experience you need to have to be accepted by NNAS/CNO? Also, since I will need a BSCN is it better to do an online British university course prior to applying? Or should I get recent practice, apply and be prepared to go to York University, Ontario if I can get a place? Wondering if anyone has any recent experience with this and can advise?
  3. Thanks for advice. Oh wow clinical placement in Alberta would not work!! I didn't join Care initially as it wasn't worth it as I couldn't get down to info sessions etc from 'up north. Will give them a ring though!
  4. So I had never heard of it before... Does Ontario recognize the qualification?
  5. Hi all, I'm originally from the UK, Diploma trained Registered Nurse qualified in 2000. I moved to Ontario in 2014 and after a long process (the processing of application by CNO) have successfully registered as an RPN. I feel sure I made the wrong choice in applying for RPN than RN here but felt after numerous reading at the time that RPN would be easier and since I can't undo it here I am. Anyway going forward from here, is there any way a IEN member has successfully transitioned from RPN to RN and how did they do it? I had originally thought that I could bridge once I became an RPN but have heard anecdotally that Nippising University in Ontario wouldn't recognise her original training in the UK as equivalent to RPN here so wouldn't let her carry on to bridge. I will follow this up myself but just wondering if anyone else had any ideas? Or any other nursing courses that would accept international education... I had also thought about asking for credits for what I had done and seeing if I could fill in the extras to get to an Ontario RPN education? I live two hours north of Toronto (nearest uni is an hour away) I have three children- the youngest is 14 months and my husband has a busy job and we have no relatives around to help out so going back to school for 4 yrs to do the RN training straight really isn't an option. I'm looking for a more long winded part time approach to becoming an RN? Any help or advice would be appreciated..
  6. Ok..... And might be helpful to other users It doesn't really apply to me though as we moved to Ontario for my husband's job as main income and Ontario being the easiest province to move to in terms of licensing for his role.
  7. Thanks! I will do it if but not without putting up a fight first! It's their bloomin fault taking so dam long to assess me! Not that that matters to them..
  8. You mean the 45 minutes spent waiting for them to answer on Wednesday, and the 40 minutes yesterday. I have also emailed my case worker (Wednesday morning) without reply as yet. I spoke to the Office of Fair Commission today who has given me another email to try and said it was totally ridiculous and that if I don't get any joy to ring them back.
  9. Yes because I'm just over two years out of practice. Apparently they grant two years grace of "English Proficiency" to get all components together. They had my application for 18 months before I was told I could sit the exam which was September. Applied for the next exam in January 2016 which took me past my two years. The idea that they can find someone proficient in English and it expires is nonsensical. There are other options than an exam but a vague word of mouth has it that they are rarely successful but since that reportedly came from the CNO customer service and I don't trust much they say, I was hoping to run into someone on here with advice or experience..
  10. On my phone and posted too soon!
  11. Hi there, I'm a UK nurse- born and bred, studied in the UK and spent my nursing career of 10+years there before moving to Ontario. I was given the "two years" of recognized English proficiency upon my application but given the length of time it took for the CNO to assess and put me forward for the exam, my "proficiency" expired on the 31st December 2015. I sat and passed both exams (RPN and JP) the second week of January but now need to prove my proficiency in English before I can register. Of course the easiest way would be to suck it up and sit the Academic IELTS but I'm feeling beligerent and cross about it all. There is an option to ask for an extension for the two year period, but I'm just wondering if this has any hope of succeeding. Has anyone done this? How often does the Registration Committee meet? The only thing in my favour or maybe not is that I have left an email trail over misinformation given to me by the call centre which delayed my application. After I wrote to them and pointed this out formally, I was very quickly informed I could sit the exam. I sat the next available exam and passed. Might work in my favour but they might think blah make her do the exam! Honestly I just want to work, I'm frustrated again by another step put in my way.. Hope someone has some helpful experience either negative or positive!
  12. I passed! Woo hoo! Although apparently I am not proficient in English anymore:cautious:
  13. You're right they are! Woo hoo!
  14. Argh I haven't my letter in the mail! I will be waiting until Tuesday now:yawn:
  15. Someone in Toronto has heard!!! I haven't been out yet and I'm hours north and my mailbox is nowhere near my house!!
