uk nurse moving to CA

Published

Hi guys!!!,

So I am originally from Phoenix but studied nursing in London. I have been wanting to move to CA for a while now. I have been qualified and working as a dermatology/infectious diseases nurse for a year and a half now.

So far I've found that I need to the CGFNS exam and the NCLEX

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the ball rolling and if I'm missing out on anything.

Thanks a million :)

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

CA BRN does their own assessment. Are you generalist trained with clinical and theory in adult/med-surg, geriatrics, pediatrics, psych/mental health, and obstetrics-maternity?

Hey,

thanks for the reply. I'm only trained in clinical/theory in adult med/surg and geriatrics. The English system breaks it down and you only specialise in one, I chose adults.

So does this mean I would have to go back to university to study the remainder or is there another way?

thanks :)

Yes you need to return to school for clinical & theory in mental health, pediatrics& maternity/obstetrics. US & CAN are generalist trained. I know UK is specialist trained. Each has it's merits

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

CA do not need CGFNS exam, they do their own assessment. You will for all states be required to sit and pass NCLEX

oh really i thought all states required the CGFNS exam if you studied abroad.. good to know then

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

only a small handful require CGFNS exam most just require CGFNS CES report which is a breakdown on your transcripts
