UIU CEP Hybrid or Online

I know the UIU CEP program is newer than others and not a lot of cohorts have been through it. I am vexxed between chosing which to do. I prefer face to face classes. The hybrid program spends 3-4 hours every other week in the classroom setting while the online program is strictly that.

Can anyone lend their expirence? How did you chose which you would do? I understand that some of the MCCCD campuses nursing schedules don't correlate well with the UIU hybrid program and now limit the hybrid students to Mesa, Scottsdale and, Glendale program only.

I am considering taking PSY230 w/ MCCCD in place of MAT220 w/ UIU for my beginning summer semster. Strictly because once you choose between hybrid or online with UIU you must remain in the specificed program.

For my personal needs, taking Stats ONLINE and in 8 WEEKS is a recipe for disaster. Therefore taking with MCCCD in person in the Spring would be better.

I am not interested in taking the hybrid program w. UIU. I would prefer to do online.... but that Stats would be an issue.

Anyhow, any insight is appreciated.

I might choose the hybrid, it just depends on what MCCCD school I am placed at. My first choice is Mes Day (UIU Hybrid compatible), then Mesa Afternoon (mostly UIU Hybrid compatible), and Gateway Day (not Hybrid compatible). Plus I know of students who were offered last minute placements at MCCCD schools that weren't on their list initially. I live in Ahwatukee, so the drive isn't an issue for me. It really comes down to placement, because I really do prefer some in-person class time, plus I'd love to bond with my cohort while there. I KNOW I am going to need buddies!

-Can you explain further how your first online class was so challenging?

-What else did you get out of the in-person class time besides being able to complete assignments?

-Was it lecture heavy? Or more of a time to work on those assignments?

-Are the online discussion questions and responses only for the online students? As a hybrid student did you not have to complete these?

How awesome is it to have MCCCD instructors at UIU!

I'm trying to determine if there is a possibility for me to start before spring semester of next year if I submit my app in May

I am happy to share my experience thus far with you!

I turned in my CEP application with MCC on December 24th, just after Grades posted from the Fall semester. The advisor told me that for the last placement cycle, Mesa had 85 CEP spots available and they had 75 applicants. Therefore, no CEP applicants were turned away.

In the future, as the CEP program becomes more popular, there is a chance students will be turned away.

Ive spoken with the UIU advisor many times since turning in my application, she has assured it is very likely that I will begin my UIU classes in May and my MCC classes in the Fall. This is because there isn't currently any wait list at UIU. As long as a student meets the minimum requirements, they will begin the semester following submitting their application.

To to be honest, your best bet is to call the UIU advisor or meet with her in person to look over your unofficial transcripts. She will be able to give you the best estimation for your personal situation. She is super awesome! Her contact information can be found on the UIU CEP application from the Maricopa Nursing website or private message me!

The advisor told me that if I am accepted, that I can expect to begin my online classes with the University (I'm probably going to go with Ottawa) in the Fall, and the nursing program (in-person) would begin in the Spring semester (January 2018).

For Ottawa there is a co-req that can be completed anytime during the degree (statistics) but she strongly advised doing that during the summer for two reasons: 1. It will help to have the base knowledge provided by the statistics for the nursing program, for things such as dosage calculations etc, and 2. Because once the program starts in the Fall, it will be tough to take statistics on top of the demanding workload.

I am hoping to get a place at either Estrella Mountain CC (24 available seats) or Glendale CC (96 available seats).

Which CC and Uni are you hoping to apply for?

I have my app in at MCC right now and was planning to apply to UIU. I am finishing my last two co-req's (BIO 202 and 205) this semester. I REALLY hope I can start the UIU classes in the fall, that would be awesome!

I originally planned to take BIO 205 in person in the fall but when I saw that they didn't place people for UIU until the following February, I was stressed about missing an entire semester. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that taking BIO 205 online will be worth it in the end ; )

HI - I am new here, and currently wrapping up the last few pre-reqs before I apply to the CEP program. I am undecided about applying at EMCC or GCC. EMCC is closer for me, but has a much smaller intake (about 1/4 of GCC), so I can only assume the competition is tighter to get a place?

Also - UIU is in my shortlist of Universities to go with (I am also considering NAU and Ottawa) - what made you guys go with UIU? DId you prefer their program?

EMCC probably is more competitive because I believe they only take 24 students for each cohort now. I had 28 to start in mine (maybe 29, I can't remember). I chose EMCC as my first choice because it is smaller, I had taken some of my science pre-req's there, and it makes my family schedule much easier to manage when I don't have to worry about driving against rush hour traffic every day for school. I had GCC as my second choice, both the traditional program and the weekend/evening one.

There are some things I haven't liked about EMCC, but for the most part it's been a decision I'm happy with. I hear things about other Maricopa schools that make me happy I don't go there, but you have to remember that people say things about every Maricopa school. If EMCC is closer for you and will make your life easier, then put it on your list.

As for UIU, I went with them because I only had to take 2 classes to apply for them which would get me in the fastest. If I wanted to do NAU I would've needed 5-6 more classes before applying. On top of that, the advisor for UIU always answered my questions and got back to me right away. I really appreciated the communication I got from UIU. I do wish their program would be completed at the same time or right after our Associate program like other universities though (UIU is the longest one to complete because you have to be licensed to take their last couple courses).

Hi Again!

We're kind of in the same position! I'm cramming my final 3 pre-reqs so I can turn in my application in May, with the hope of starting the Ottawa online courses in the Fall. I'm taking CHM, BIO and another class this March on the 8-week program. Should be done end of April, and turn in the application as soon as I can after that.

Ottawa University (who I hope to go with) has one co-req that I am planning to complete during the summer before starting their online classes in the fall.

This all assumes I am accepted, of course....if I don't get in, it's all a moot point! LOL!

Have you checked out the study pathway for UIU? I seem to recall (don't quote me) but their fall program has 2 online classes with 1 MCC class running concurrently. It's different for Ottawa; they have 3 or 4 online classes in the fall, and one doesn't start the nursing block until Spring.In other words, if you get onto the fall program, you could be straight into the nursing.

Can I ask what you didn't/don't care for with EMCC? You're right - it's only 24 seats this semester. I went for some advisement last week, although I chose a bad time to go and was waiting 3 hours!! :dead:

I don't like that they place us in clinical without choice. I know some schools (GCC) have the students register for the options on a first come first serve basis. EMCC doesn't do this, they just place us randomly and we don't even have the option of deciding for ourselves which ones work best for us.

They do 12-hour clinicals while other schools do 8 hour or 10 hour. 12 hours is fine when that's your job and you are working, but when you have two 12 hour days back to back and still have to get school work done, it can be challenging.

Some things have seemed disorganized, like getting our schedule for example. We did not have our complete schedule for this semester until a week before class started. We knew a rough idea of days and whether it would be morning or afternoon, but an actual schedule was not given til a week before hand.

The nursing secretary is difficult to communicate with and get straight answers from. She often ignores emails completely.

Having said all that, we do have a new director so who knows how things will change with that. I really like the Block instructors for lectures. And as I said previously, the fact that it is a smaller campus and smaller cohort is a plus in my eyes. I don't regret having EMCC as my first choice and getting placed there.

That's crazy about clinicals! Did they tell you why they don't allow students to choose? At GWCC, we rank the clinical placements in order of preference and they do their best to accommodate. Seems strange that you get no say!

No, they have never told us why they do this. I would assume it's just easier to not have to worry about placing students based on their preferences, but it seems they have difficulty getting the schedule together anyways so I wish they would open it up first come first serve or let us rank them for preference. I do know they have let some students switch with each other if they mutually agreed to do so.
