UIC Fall 2021 BSN Program

Updated:   Published

I submitted my app for UIC yesterday. I'm anxious for the result. So for anyone else who applied what is your GPA and your extracurricular activities? I'm a transfer student with a 3.2 GPA and I've worked at an animal hospital for 3 years.
I got denied last year due to my GPA so I'm just trying to figure out my chances, and where I can improve if I get denied again. ?

Hey guys! I'm soo nervous for the interviews too, I'm assuming they might be over Zoom this year too though? I'm a transfer student, I majored for 2 years at a 4 year university in Psych and then switched to nursing and completed all my prereqs this year at community college, so I don't have volunteer experience because of Covid and the hospitals near me not allowing volunteers:( I have a 4.0 though, really strong letters of rec, and manage a pool where we are the primary responders in a lot of situations, and research experience in Psychology as well so I hope that will make up for no volunteer/medical experience LOL. @neuro_domi what did the nursing students you talked to say about the interview process? I wish I knew some people that went to UIC for nursing already, that would be so helpful! Good luck to everyone! Hope to see you all at interviews/in the Fall!

I did a mock interview last week with some current students and alumni from the UIC nursing program and I believe they mentioned the interview this year will be online through Zoom!

Yay! So it shouldn’t be that bad then ?

Same here ?  I have 2 friends who got in and a random person I met on Reddit I’ve been talking too about the application process. He says that last year everything was still in person (late February) so 6 ppl groups would come in and answer 4-5 questions followed by a writing sample. He says he doesn’t really remember all the questions but they were like; why do you want to be a nurse, your weaknesses and why you’d be a strong candidate for UIC BSN. He also says it’s pretty intimidating because you need to respond rather quickly and the presence of other ppl (meaning your competition) does not help. What all of them say is not to learn answers of generic questions by heart, but rather reherse and modify to your true self because it stands out more than all those sample answers you could find online. The 2 friend I mentioned had 3.9 and 4.0 GPA, but they had a TON of volunteering experience. The girl with 4.0 has been volunteering for 3 years now continuously which makes me think I’m not strong enough to compete with ppl like her. The guy I’ve been talking via Reddit had 3.5 GPA and no so much volunteering but... oh boy! He did some serious shadowing experience in NY and was a research assistant at Columbia University. His name was mentioned in the research paper so that’s that ... I mean.... isn’t that annoying??? (????) jk I’m so happy for them because they sure deserve it. I just hope we all get it as well ??????
What’s  more important which they all said to me: don’t be afraid to sell yourself especially if your resume isn’t just excellent. After all it’s not all about the GPA since some ppl with 4.0 do not get in (I mean really ?!!??) What matters is how attractive and special you are to them and to UIC itself. I hope that makes sense LOL

btw, did anyone call the admission office to ask if they’re doing interviews remotely or in person? I’m participating in mock interviews tomorrow from 11am -12 pm so I’ll let you know ?

Oh wow that's awesome they all totally deserved it, thanks for sharing! But also wow thats intimidating, damn I wish I had more time to volunteer outside of the pandemic. But yeah I totally agree with you about being authentic and standing out in the interview process - I think they will hold a whole lot of weight. Honestly at this point besides the interview it will be pretty much out of our hands! Good luck with your mock interview!!

Thank you so much!! I’m curious to see how it’s gonna look like.  Did you apply to any other campus other than Chicago?

Let me know how it goes! I didn't get a mock interview email but I read that a bunch of other transfer students didn't get one last year so I'm trying not to be worried LOL. I selected Urbana as my third choice on the course eval form, I didn't see any other place to apply to other campuses other than that! Did you?

I most certainly will! I put Chicago Campus 3 times since that’s the only one I’m considering. I know it’s harder to get in to Chicago, but I can’t imagine myself driving to Champaign everyday. I only applied to 2 nursing programs in Chicago and few Neuroscience programs in Illinois and one in Baltimore (Johns Hopkins in case of getting JKC scholarship ?

That's great! Yeah, I'm too nervous to decide what date I'm going to go! ?

I've always heard to never interview on Monday bc its the beginning of the week and people are tired and to never interview on Friday because people are looking to the weekend... not sure if this applies in all cases but I chose Wednesday just in case!
