UI Chicago GEP Spring 2012

Published

Anyone planning to apply to UIC's GEP for winter/spring 2012? (http://www.uic.edu/nursing/prospectivestudents/gep-about.shtml) The application opened on January 15 and is due March 1.

I just finished the primary application and am waiting to receive the secondary application to send out recommendation requests. Their application cycle is a bit odd and inconvenient, since most other places that start in the fall require deposits by late March into early April, and UIC doesn't inform you of your status until late April. But in the end, it's still a great program and worth a shot.

Hi everyone, I am so happy to find this website, I also applied to the same program but I first applied to transfer to the BSN program. I'm having a little concern though, I sent all my transcript when I applied for BSN program just a month before the GEP application began, and I was told I didn't need to resend my transcripts but now my admission said I had outstanding application requirement because my transcripts were not posted. I sent an email to them and have not yet received a reply, the last time I sent an email I was told they have my transcripts but I am really nervous now that I did not receive any email saying that my application is complete, does anyone have similar concern?

Eek! I can totally understand being stressed out about that. Have you been emailing GEP admissions or the transcript people? I'd definitely recommend the former so that they have your follow-up in their records.

Well, I didn't receive an email saying that my completed application has been received, even though that's what all the sites show. I'm not sure that's standard procedure. What about other applicants?

If it makes you feel better, I also did not get an email saying my application was completed. The only one I received said that my letters of rec were still outstanding, but a few hours later my last recommender submitted her recommendation, so I know mine is complete.

Softenny - I agree with Phoenix, if you haven't contacted the CON that's probably your best bet to find out what is going on with your transcripts. You may also want to contact the department/person who told you that you didn't need to re-submit your transcripts, just to check in and make sure everything is squared away. Hopefully that will help to alleviate your nerves some!

Buzzj,

I'm pretty nervous about the whole process... I was going through the threads for the people applying for the 2011 cohort and it didn't help calm my nerves at all... They were saying about 7 people are offered positions so I'm more than a little stressed. UIC is my first choice because of all of the specialities that it offers. Going to Rush would mean that I would have to take further testings for ACNP.

The previous threads showed that the ACNP hopefulls received emails about interviews March 23rd and interviews were held April 5th...so hopefully in two weeks we will hear if we were offered interviews!!! Good Luck and I'd love to hear more from you!

Misspriss, thanks for getting back to me..I guess we will have a little wait time to endure...but it will be worth it right? :) I have the exact sentiments as far as to why UIC is my number one choice, however there are so many different routes to take that I do feel a bit more hopeful about the whole process in becoming a np. Should UIC not work out, rush and depaul's program will allow for some of your master's work to be completed anyways. Though the shortest time to become an NP would be about 3.5 years for UIC..depaul and Rush would be about 4.5-5 however their programs start in June and August respectively. So the difference in time is not as great as it seems.

One question I have for you though is in regards to your professional background and volunteer/health experience...mine is limited to volunteering at a hospital and CNA liscense.

Have a good tuesday!

buzzj,

Sorry for taking so long to repsond... I haven't received any emails for this thread so I'll just have to keep an eye on it for responses!

I have an associates in radiology and I did my clincals at Loyola in Maywood. I have a bachelors in psychology and have volunteered with the American Cancer Society for about a year and half now. My work experience is minimal in health care however because when I graduated with my a.a.s. it was the start of the recession and the hospitals were on hiring freezes and no one was retiring. I worked for about six months at an office as a radiology tech/medical assistant (they crosstrained me there) and then left when I was offered more money at a previous office job where I still work.

Rush and Depaul are also my back up choices. I have thought about P.A. but decided against it since there isn't any further degrees or crossovers after the masters to any sort of doctorate. I like that the N.P. doesn't shut the door any future since you can go for a couple different routes-even at UIC.

Out of all of the options- why did you choose acute care?

General question - Has anyone taken or registered for the research methods prereq at the City Colleges of Chicago?

The pdf at UIC's website shows Psych 212 is the course we'd need to take, but when I met with an academic advisor, he said they didn't offer that course at all and couldn't find anything similar.

I took research methods as a course for my bachelors in psychology but it was at a university in iowa. The name of the course though was "research methods". If you can take a look at the course catalog I would look for it there. But also... this was during my third year of my bachelors... maybe there is a chance that it is not offered at a community college but that you might have to take it at a four year?

Psych 212 is the course number listed for CCC on the acceptable research methods prereq course list UIC GEP provided, and they have quite a few other community colleges listed as well. I'm hoping my background will mean I won't have to take it, but just in case, I'm trying to have all my t's crossed and my i's dotted! CCC seems to be the preferred school of choice for those accepted who still need to complete prereqs. :)

With regard to a post a while back, I did receive an e-mail from Julie Kim on 2/28 that said that my essays and rec letters had been received. The e-mail also said that I would be notified in a few days if they didn't have my GRE scores, and I never heard anything further.

In other news, I am 99% positive it was three of four of those classes for Rush at some point! There was another point that the application deadline was May 1, then it was May 13, and now it is a completely doable June something for people who are in pre-reqs right now. Either way, I think after hearing everyone else talk about this program, I'm leaning more this way.

Thanks one Phoenix and Rachelrae, I will do just that. I'm still very nervous though. I applied for the Mental Health program, anyone else for Mental Health?

I'm so glad that I found this to kind of keep track of what everyone is doing/when they are being contacted. I am so nervous too! I applied for Pediatrics....anyone else? Good luck everyone :)
