UI Chicago GEP Spring 2012

Published

Anyone planning to apply to UIC's GEP for winter/spring 2012? (http://www.uic.edu/nursing/prospectivestudents/gep-about.shtml) The application opened on January 15 and is due March 1.

I just finished the primary application and am waiting to receive the secondary application to send out recommendation requests. Their application cycle is a bit odd and inconvenient, since most other places that start in the fall require deposits by late March into early April, and UIC doesn't inform you of your status until late April. But in the end, it's still a great program and worth a shot.

Thanks, everyone! Since mine didn't arrive until last week I guess I have a few more days of waiting. It's good to know four weeks isn't standard! :)

Will it update when they receive GRE scores? Can I safely assume that if I received my paper copy, they received their electronic copy?

Good luck to everyone!

Hi Seaster! I had your same question and called ETS about it a couple of weeks ago. Since UIC does accept the scores electronically, they should have recieved your scores the day they officially posted, which would have been prior to you getting your scores in the mail. Sounds like you are all set!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going to be checking my inbox a lot over the next few weeks! :) Good luck to you all!

That's a relief, RRG. Thanks! I should be all set then.

Somehow that doesn't make me any less nervous. :-/

Hi Guys!!!!

I am so excited to find this site!!! I also applied to UIC's gep for 2012 for the speciality of acute care. My nerves have been a wreck since January! I did receive an email on Monday that said it was a friendly note that my gre scores, letters of rec. and my supplimental were received for Seaster's post. I'd love to keep in touch with you guys as this process continues to calm myself :p

Miss Priss,

Glad you found this site as well...I am also applying for the ACNP program and am nervous and excited to see how this all turns out! In the past I believe they have informed people of information by specialty so lets try and keep one another up to date. Best of Luck!

Is anyone else also applying to Rush's program? Have you seen a message board for it?

I am thinking about applying to Rush's program. If I'm not accepted to UIC, I may just saddle myself with taking six classes over the course of summer and fall semester so that I can apply this summer for the Rush winter '12 start date. Do you know if the application has opened up for Rush's June 10th application deadline?

I'm sure it would have opened by now. When I went to an info session last summer, Dr. Hicks strongly encouraged applying early. I think they recently switched over to using a common application, but I'm not positive.

Which classes do you have to take? I ask because they require that you have three of four of A&P 1, A&P 2, o-chem or biochem, and microbiology before they'll even consider your application. I'm also curious as to whether they have rolling notification - if I do UIC over Rush, I'll be done w/ pre-reqs at the end of this semester, and I'd rather not be in summer school if I don't have to be.

I probably won't be applying to Rush's program, but instead UCSF's. They have a comparable program to UIC's, whereas Rush's program is just a generalist program. I'm more interested in being able to act as an autonomous healthcare provider working directly with patients than as a leader in a hospital setting, and that seems to be more what Rush's GEM program is geared towards.

I've searched for other comparable programs to UCSF and UIC, but I can't find any others, can anyone else?

I know misspriss1214 mentioned she received an email saying that all of her material had been received, did everyone else? Due to one of my recommenders, my complete application was in close to the deadline, but I never received that sort of email. My personal application link and the transcript/fee link both say the materials have been received, but I'm still nervous yet I don't want to bug the admissions folks. :o

(It's also worth noting that Rush doesn't require 3 out of 4, just the following:)

A minimum of two of the four prerequisite science courses (organic chemistry or biochemistry with lab, human anatomy*, human physiology*, microbiology), must be completed before consideration by the College Admissions Committee. Do not finalize your NCAS application until you have met this requirement.

I went to an info session about a year ago for Rush and I thought you could go the NP route through their program after completing your generalist coursework, although I could be confusing that with other nursing programs I visited. I am definitely most interested in working as a healthcare "provider" rather than a healthcare "consultant" and want to work one-on-one with patients.

As far as my science coursework goes, I've only completed Intro to Bio, A&P1 and I'm currently taking A&P2. If I decide to apply to Rush, I'll have to do so at the beginning of May (when I'll be done with A&P2). However, before I apply I definitely need to go back and look at my info session materials from Rush to see if you can go the NP route through their program, part-time, after finishing your generalist education.

Phoenix - I love the UCSF program also. It doesn't hurt too that it's located in San Francisco! :) Good luck to you if/when you apply - it sounds like a great experience and a quality program!!

If I remember correctly, that's true, it just seems like a more indirect route to me, and I could be mis-remembering, but I thought it took longer and was more expensive than uic. I'm not trying to be disparaging of generalists, it's just not what I'd like to do. Also, uic has several distinct advantages over Rush. :) Good luck with your apps too!!!
