Hi all, anybody out there applying for this program? I haven't seen an updated thread on it yet. I just finished applying to UHV- just waiting on NursingCAS to receive my final transcript for my application to be considered "complete" I'm also applying to UTHSCH UTHSCSA accelerated programs, and TWU-Houston traditional BSN program. I have my B.S. in Human Biology from UT Austin in Spring 2010. My undergrad GPA was definitely less than stellar, but all my pre-req coursework is not too bad. What is y'alls impression of this program?
@jennytmuw, the "titers" are just blood tests to show what you are immune to. So, for example, you could either show documentation that you have received all 3 Hep. B vaccines, or if you don't have the shot records, you could get a titer (blood test) to show that you are immune to Hep. B (basically if you have received the vaccines but don't have the shot records available). Hope that makes sense. I just went to Walgreens and got all of the immunizations done, but I am getting a titer done to show that I had chicken pox when I was younger, since I don't have the documentation.
I don't think we are required to have the immunizations by the time of the interview, but I wanted to go ahead and get that completed in case they ask for the paperwork while we are at the interview. But I don't think it will count against you if you don't have it. We just need to have them done by the time the program starts, if we are accepted!
Thank you tlc0584 !Yes it would be awesome if we all got accepted !!
Gosh, I hope we do.
Oh I was also wondering the "titers" ya'll have mentioned. What is that? Did you all get an email about immunizations? I haven't received any information on that...
Sorry! Didn't mean to scare you! UHV hasn't sent me anything in regards to immunization requirements, however I did accept a spot at TWU for Spring 2014. They require the paperwork for these tests by December 4 so I'm scrambling to keep up with their deadlines, as well.
Like lbaum mentioned, it is the blood testing which proves immunity to certain infectious diseases. I'm sure once we are accepted they will ask us to hop on that testing ASAP. Our clinical sites require proof of our immunity before we are able to participate in the rotations. TWU requires titer proof of MMR (three tests:measles, mumps, rubella,) hep B and C, varicella. Further, we'll need the season's flu vaccine plus a TB skin test. I wouldn't worry too much about it yet because I'm sure they will give us the info of what they need when the time comes. I'm just preparing for the worst case scenario that I am not accepted at UHV, I'll still be starting school in January at TWU. :)
ah okay! lol! yes I was freaked out a bit hehe
That's good that you have something to fall back on! No matter what you'll be starting nursing school! I do hope you and everyone else here get accepted-ya'll seem uber nice :)
I also freaked out a bit when I received an email from UHV saying they need the UHV application submitted since today is the deadline. I'd already submitted mine! So they probably just sent it to everyone just in case
Yes, I got the e-mail about the UHV application as well! Hopefully not everyone filled it out, and then there will be less of us to cut at the interview :)
I have a question for any current students....do you know when we will have holidays/breaks? Is it ever possible to miss a day of class? I'm just thinking ahead, and if I DO get accepted, I will have to go to a wedding in Costa Rica on Saturday, March 8. I need to schedule my flight soon. Should I just plan on flying out on Friday, and flying back home on Sunday? Or if I have Wednesday clinical, would it be possible to leave after class on Thursday night, and fly back home on Sunday? I'm guessing I wouldn't want to miss Sim Lab Day (Monday), right? I don't want to pay $750 for a plane ticket and only stay down there for two days, but I definitely DON'T want to miss anything in class or fall behind...that is way more important. I know there are a lot of "if's", but any advice would be very much appreciated!!
You'll have spring break in March; summer break after finals in May which is 2 weeks or 3 (depending on if you decide to do your elective in the beginning of summer or end); another break after summer school in August (1 week or 2 - again depending on which elective); Thanksgiving and I think that's it. Of course your National holidays (Labor/ Memorial & the 4th of July -- unless your clinical happens to fall on that day).
As for the tickets, I have to be honest… this is a 1 year program. You'll be sacrificing a lot of your time, but will be rewarded once you graduate. In this program, you'll eat, sleep, and breathe nursing. I'm not saying not to take any trips, but you kind of have to wait until the syllabi come out for your classes and work around that. After the 1st 3 weeks, you'll have an exam nearly every Tuesday. You have to clock in for class, so I wouldn't advice missing class either… especially during 1st semester. And definitely don't miss clinical/ Sim lab. You have to have a certain amount of hours with the Texas Board of Nursing. I know things come up and life happens, but at all cost, try to avoid those things. That means, stay healthy, and avoid planning things until you know your class, test, and clinical schedules, AND of course, your study habits.

Just a head's up, I LOVE this website called tripadvisor. I swear I get the cheapest tickets thanks to them. I recently went to NY in early Nov. for $217RT. Wherever in CR you are going, you can set it up to where it will send you an email alert for when the price goes down. Typically, I get my tickets like on a Tues night or Weds. am when they are cheapest. Hope that helps as far as the financial burden for the time you'll be there! :)
Thank you so much aea1029 and apriljacklynn!
Thankfully I found out that UHV's spring break next year will be March 10 - 14, so I will be scheduling my trip for Friday, March 7 through Wednesday, March 12. Hooray! :)
I did speak to another former student of this program, and she strongly advised against missing any classes as well. So hopefully if I fly out Friday afternoon I can get everything done for that week, and still make it to the wedding! Great idea about tripadvisor! Thanks guys!!
Now to continue patiently waiting until interview day...getting nervous!
Hi! I will be attending the interview on 12/2 as well! Was a little nervous but relieved that we won't be alone during any of the interview. I keep seeing something mentioned about a Blue Card?! What is this exactly? I went to get my background check done and the lady signed the paper that was attached to the email. That's all we need right? Also, don't forget to email proof of current CPR to the school before TOMORROW 11/22 @5pm!!

Hi everybody! I've been following this forum for a couple of days now. Congratulations to everyone who got invited to the interview! I will see you there too!
I called UHV today to ask some questions and one was about our attire for the interview. They said dress business professional and wear comfortable shoes because we will be walking around a lot, even though it will look goofy. I'm pretty nervous about this interview.
