UH 2nd Degree BSN 2020 Applicants (University of Houston Second Degree BSN Program)

Published

Hello future nursing students!

I didn't see a forum for those of us applying to the University of Houston - Sugar Land nursing program in the Spring of 2020, so I decided to start one. I have already submitted my application and completed my CPR certification, so now there's just the waiting. I've attached all the resources from the UH website that I could find, just for everyone's convenience.

I do have a few questions though: is anyone else having issues submitting the SSN release form? I get an error message every time I try, and I haven't heard back from the school about it yet (I emailed them asking if it had been received). Are y'all applying to other accelerated programs? If so- could you share which ones?

I was also wondering what kind of stats everyone who's applying has, or if anyone has any info about past applicants/students and the scores/extracurriculars that they had before acceptance. If anyone would be willing to share that info, it would be super appreciated!

Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone!

I have a 3.0 overall GPA (bad decisions in my early college years) but my prereq GPA will be about a 3.8 and I have 9 years experience in the medical field. Do you think that my 3.0 cumulative GPA will hurt my chances of getting in? I plan on applying for next years program, but I am worried. Does anyone know someone who has gotten into this program with a 3.0?

Thanks in advance! and good luck to everyone who applied this year!

I'm fairly certain that I've seen people apply and get invited to interview with a 3.0, but I'd say that your TEAS needs to be very strong. I don't think my GPA is super strong, but I got invited for an interview. If you have the time, money, and you're concerned about it, I'd probably recommend taking a few fluffer online classes at a community college and acing those to bump it up a bit. It doesn't seem like there are many hard and fast rules for who they do and don't accept as long as you meet the base requirements.

I hope that helps. Good luck!!

My GPAs look very similar to yours - 3.0 cumulative (also bad decisions in early college years) / 3.84 prereq - and I got an interview invite. I scored 92% on my TEAS. You should definitely apply!

Omg this makes me feel so much better! Thanks for the info!

Hey y'all --

I sent my acceptance email to attend the interview, and I just paid for the drug test.

Few questions for those in the know--

When would the test be? At the interview? Is it a urine test?

and

Any current/former students have tips on how to prepare for the interview? I intend to read the U of H Student Policies thoroughly as well as the Standards of Nursing doc linked in the email, but ANY insight on how to prepare or what to expect would be appreciated! Do they ask curveballs? Is it like a traditional job interview? What exactly is this group activity?... *dies of anxiety*

Thank you! <3

I wouldn't worry too much about and I definitely don't think that those scores would hold you back. I also have similar scores (3.4 and 3.3) and i was invited for an interview. Definitely retake some of those classes at your local community college if you can though. They're alot cheaper than university prices and i personally feel that they're a tad bit easier! Good Luck!

If it's like last year, the interview day has a general info session (money, scheduling, expectations) and the drug screen is that day (urine). There's a picture taken that you'll use for everything, so look super nice. Wear dark business professional suit, hair up, and studs. Cover up tattoos and tone down makeup. These make you already look like what they're expecting the students to look like during the program and to get a job after. The interviews are done in groups of 3-5 with 2 faculty. They ask the traditional stuff: why choose to be a nurse, what are some strengths/weaknesses, how are you going to cope with this program's speed (anxiety/stress), a situation where you had a conflict, and a few hypothetical cheating/lying/priority situations that you may or may not be able to answer if you don't have any experience in the medical field.

As long as you pass all the requirements and have a decent pre-req GPA (3.2) and Teas score (85% ish) you'll prob get to the interview stage. During the interview, no gum, look interested/listen, ask questions. Most of the people that were at the interview got in btw, at least over 75%.

Hello everyone! Got an email, too for the Interview Day last Sept. 9 past 5 pm. I am so excited to meet you all! Is the interview process a make or break for the acceptance in the 2nd degree BSN Program ? Any tips about the interview and the group presentation ? Thanks !

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much set up this group. I got the email for the interview too. Hope to put faces to the names here. @maltacs22 I would suggest you read the previous pages. There is so much information on the interview, dress code etc.

Thanks for all the information and tips ! This forum has been very helpful! See you all !

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if they’re still sending out interview invites?
