I heard from a guy at work today his friend got a rejection letter from Manoa yesterday (Thursday)...but he didn't know any info about his application like his GPA, NET or anything...so, I guess they are slowly but surely starting to send out info regarding the upcoming semester...Good luck everyone, the wait is almost over! It's driving me nuts!
The school of nursing may get a 42% cut. If they do get that huge budget cut because of the university, it would happen around 2010.
I also heard about the budget cuts... I think it was on the news two wks ago. If the budget cuts will happen, they were gonna layoff temporary teachers and so on, but nothing was said specifically about the nursing program.
I am confused about the info above, for both scenarios more people will be admitted? How did you find out about this info? Thanks.
I apologize. I mean to say that if there are budget cuts, then LESS people would be admitted and there would a slight increase in the number of alternates. I believe the alternates are those who are standing by in case if a person who was already admitted into the program drops out or in worst cases, gets kicked out for something very bad.
Also, UH Manoa as a whole university, is an Affirmative Action Institution. This may mean that since the field of nursing is a female dominated field, they try to bring in more males into the field. They may try to admit exceptionally qualified males. Although they are trying to admit an even number of males and females, there are still not that many males who want to go into nursing because of the social stereotyping of male nurses as being gay and this is a whole other issue and trend that requires another thread but I won't go there. Good luck into getting into the program. I would tell you, DO NOT GIVE UP in getting into UH Manoa nursing program. Work hard in your prereqs and study hard for the (The NET may be soon discontinued and replaced with the NLN) NLN.

when i went to see kate for pre-nursing advising, she added up my points for me exactly as the admitting committee would be.
i did not get any extra points for having a member. :icon_roll
i did get points for a 99th percentile on the NLN, 4.0 pre-reqs, and over 500 on the SAT verbal.
AFAIK there are no extra member points allotted during the admission process. btw my class only has 5 or 6 guys out of 60. the ones i know personally are pretty damn smart and highly motivated. when comparing them to many other students in our class, there's no question of whether or not they were admitted in the name of affirmative action. it's pretty obvious they earned their spot.

I am not saying males got their spot in nursing school because they have a member. I just heard this information from past graduates from UHMSON. I heard this from at least 5 people in the 2004-2008 classes from every semester that I had talked to. I would believe the guys in your class are smart. All the guys in my class are smart as well. What semester are you in? Although the admissions committee look at each application blindly by GPA, NLN score, point tally, etc, from what past semster students told me, being a male adds one point to the score. I forgot to mention that I was also skeptical about this "affirmative action institution" thing.
BTW, does anyone know how to change screen names? My account says I won't be able to change the sn until 2010! I didn't know that until after I changed it to this sn of hollattaplaya..
