UFV BSN SEPTEMBER 2020 INTAKE

Published

Hi everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying to UFV's BSN program for the Fall 2020 intake and figured I would create a new post where those of us applying for the Fall 2020 intake can share/help each other out with the application/admission process. Anything from discussing GPA for pre-reqs, volunteer/work experience, etc. A little bit about me - I am just about finished my HSCI degree from SFU but took this semester off to retake some of the high school pre-reqs (Chem 11, Bio 12, Math 12). I did fairly well in these classes during high school but figured I could retake them again and see if I do any better.

As far as my healthcare related experience goes, I have been volunteering at a seniors home for 6 years now, and was recently hired by the same seniors home to work as a recreation aide. I also worked as a recreation aide at another seniors Independent Living/Complex Care facility for about 1.5 years. I also spent a year volunteering at a high intensity rehab unit where I helped the OT facilitate various exercise groups (this was during a time where I was still unsure between OT and nursing).

I'm hoping to complete my high school pre reqs by the beginning of January so that I can make the January 31 deadline. This will be my first time applying to UFV or any nursing program for that matter.

Hopefully this forum can be a place where us prospective UFV BSN students can help each other throughout the application/admission process and give each other pointers! Best of luck everyone! ?

We’ll see! I am so torn as to where to attend anyways, I may not accept a seat at UFV even if it’s offered.

What other schools have you applied to? It's good that you have some options to choose from! My first choice is UFV even though it's a bit of a commute (I live in Surrey), and I'm just starting my pre-reqs for Langara's Sept 2021 intake as a back-up plan. Realistically, I would say my chances are much better with UFV since my high school grades are likely going to be a lot better than the other pre-reqs I'll be taking.

Nothing for me yet, other then checking my email 90 times today. I’m not sure how I feel about fall being all online but don’t want to give up a potential seat but at the same time don’t want to have to teach myself everything since UFV is already self directed learning ?

Hmm yeah, I know how you feel. I feel like most schools are taking an online learning approach, even when it comes to nursing programs. I'm not exactly sure how clinical courses would work though? Maybe they would be pushed back when all of this COVID stuff is over? Although, I feel like we may have to get used to online learning (myself included for the Jan 2021 intake) because schools like UBC and SFU have already stated that they're pretty sure the Jan 2021 semester will also be majority online. I'm not sure about UFV, but it seems like most universities are headed that direction. ?

I’m a mature student (early 30s) and I've been working in direct health care for the past 9 years and other related work (police victim services) for five years prior to that. I also have a previous BA degree in psychology and did a year of upgrading prior to applying to nursing. I wanted options and wasn’t sure how hard It would be to get into nursing, so I applied far and wide. I’ve been offered seats for nursing at TRU, Camosun (UVIC), VIU, UBCO, and CNC (UNBC). I haven’t heard from Okanagan College, UFV, Coast Mountain College, or BCIT. BCIT was always my top choice, and I had applied to their January 2021 intake....but due to COVID they cancelled their April intake and bumped everyone forward an intake, so I’m now being considered for April 2021. Unfortunately, I want to get this thing going as soon as possible, I’m not sure they’re an option anymore. I’ve applied for UFV’s fast-track. UBCO also has an option to finish in 3.5 years, so those faster options are appealing to me. I live in Vancouver, so would probably need to relocate regardless where so go....and I think I’d rather live in Kelowna over Chilliwack...but I have no idea. It’s a stressful decision to make.

I can definitely understand where you're coming from. I'm also a somewhat mature student (almost 23), and completed my health sciences degree from SFU. I'm passionate about nursing but don't want to relocate out of the Lower Mainland for school, nor do I want to apply to programs that have long waiting lists (think KPU/Douglas/VCC), so my options are pretty limited to 2-3 programs. I think it's great that you have so much experience, and you've received offers from so many different schools, so definitely consider yourself lucky! But I completely understand that making a decision can be difficult, so many factors need to be considered after all. Have you considered UBC's accelerated 2 year nursing program? I believe KPU also offers an accelerated 2-2.5 year nursing program for people with previous degrees, but they don't look at experience and value GPA more. Might be something to consider if it works for you! Anyways, I wish you all the very best and hope things go your way!

Mine too! I wonder if it’s the 3-year accelerated option I was hoping for. I guess I’ll have to wait and see when they send me an acceptance letter.

That means you’re in! If you look on the bottom as well it now has a box for criminal record check and immunization!

My portal says conditional admit- final documents! I haven’t gotten an email, does that mean I’m in?

For my HCA program I was a conditional admit until submitting the final documents cause technically everything isn’t handed it yet and if you don’t submit those documents you’ll lose your seat ?
