UF Accelerated BSN, Summer 2018

Published

Hi all!

It's pretty early on but I'd love to meet and chat with the potential applicants for this program. I also think it'd be great to have this forum in case we stumble upon application questions and such. Maybe some successful applicants in the past may pop in to say hello as well!

What are your feelings about this program or even UF in general? Are you applying to other programs? Where are you from?

Last few years, the decision was out around late February to mid March from what I've been able to tell on past UF threads.

Hi all! Hope everyone had a great holiday. I am currently an Accelerated BSN student at UF Jacksonville. It seems that the admission process is very different for this upcoming year. So I can't answer any questions regarding the admission process, but if you have any other questions, I can try to answer that. This forum helped me greatly last year during my application process, and I want to give back. Good luck all!

Hey, have you guys received ANY e-mail reply from Kenneth recently? I have been trying to contact him for three weeks. I'm so stressed out.

They did not have any assessment prior to this. It seems that they are trying to filter students because we have students kicked out from the program due to failed grade.

I looked and my email was sent to 270 different people, so it looks like there's at least 700 applicants then, assuming three of us were in different like email groups? I might be able to get them making me pay $55 more for an assessment then, even though it hurts my poor wallet.

I do wonder how many spots they fill though. I don't see the info on their website.

I believe UF want to try to get about 80 students for Gainesville, and about 60 for Jacksonville for summer 2018. Current students for 2017 is 60 for Gainesville and 40 for Jacksonville.

I'd be interested in any information you have on how the classes are structured (mostly teaching yourself, a lot of lectures, numerous papers, etc?) and your thoughts on the clinicals. Or even the type of schedule there is. I'm definitely trying to get into the Jax program since I live right near it, but there's not a lot of info on the program from past students. Probably because it is relatively new compared to UNF's or JU's.

Just like you said, the program is really new so they are still experimenting on their curriculum, and unfortunately my cohort and the previous one are the guinea pig.

We have to teach ourselves 90% of the time because the materials are too much. The professors are divided, with half that doesn't really care about the students and the other really cares about us. Get ready to read at least of 5 - 10 chapters (for pathophysiology class and also med-surg class) every week. Each exam will cover at least of 10-20 chapters.

I really enjoy my hospital clinical, the preceptors really wants to teach you and they will show you a lot. Clinical are divided into hospital and community clinical. The hospital clinical professors are awesome and they care about your experiences during clinical time. The only good thing that I can say about this program is the clinical experience. Being a UF students, you have priority at UF Health. They will teach you the EPIC EHR, they prefer UF students when the time comes for finding a job.

Community clinical professor still trying to figure out what to do with her life as a professor thus screwing us as the students.

As Jacksonville cohort, be ready to be the step-child of UF College of Nursing. I heard they are going to try better for next cohort, which means that my cohort already got screwed. :) So lucky for you all!

Recommendation:

1. put yourself out there during clinical. If you don't like the preceptor, tell your professor and they will find another preceptor. Ask a lot of questions, ask if you can do stuffs (you are not allowed to administer any medicine until your 3rd semester, but some preceptors will allow you to do it because they want you to learn. Some will go by the book and will not allow you to administer med).

2. Be able to learn by yourself outside class, because lecture time will only cover about 20% of the materials.

How are the exams like? And do we get help from mentors? I heard that the Gainesville program does that, how about the Jax program? I'm so excited to join but I'm so nervous as well this waiting process is nerve wrecking!

Thanks for the info. I'm sure there will be a bit more services for the incoming cohort, but it seems like the Gainesville program will always have more resources, which sucks but I figured it would be like that since Jax wouldn't have the big UF campus structure to help with resources. Though hopefully there is at least some type of tutoring offered like there would be at FSCJ or presumably UNF. Even just a science lab where you had resources to study.

Unfortunately, there will be no tutoring for Jacksonville campus. We are very under-resourced. We have to utilize UNF library to study because the library in the hospital is open at 8am until 5pm and close on the weekend. But you can use the College of Nursing office at the hospital because you will be given access to the office after hours.

You will be paying the same for Gainesville cohorts, but you will not be able to utilize all the resources that Gainesville campus have to offer, unless if you want to drive to Gainesville to use it.

The difficulty of the exams will be depending on the course coordinator. Don't expect to find the questions on quizlet because the professors make their own questions. Some of the courses you might be able to do so, but not for the major classes like Patho or System of Care.

I have questions for y'all, what are the requirement for admission? Like how many essays you have to make, how many words, was there any tests you have to take prior to applying (other than the pre-reqs). It seems that this year is much more complicated to when I applied.

The essay was 10 questions. No minimum on word count, but I think it was maximum of 300 words per question.

We needed 2 letters of recommendation, which I think was a requirement last year and before that, and a resume.

Then they added on an assessment that cost an extra $55, which was essentially a personality test.

GPA requirement was 3.0.

when did you complete your application? I was a little later than most of you on completing my application due to waiting for my last recommendation letter and I haven't gotten an assessment. I asked Kenneth if my application was no longer being considered and he wrote back you will know about your application soon

I think I submitted mine sometime in November since I was also waiting on my letters of rec. As long as your application was submitted before the deadline, I can't imagine they'd not consider it. Hopefully he just needed to look up your info to see why your email may have been skipped or something.
