    St. Jude as an RN

Hi all! I am interested to apply for a job as an RN at St. Jude. I am currently a pediatric hemonc nurse in Florida. I have never been to Memphis area, so I do not know the area. Anyone work at St. Jude that can give an insight about the culture of the hospital, benefits, payscale, and where to live. Thank you.

Going to PA as a nurse

Hi all! I am currently an Pediatric Hemonc RN in Florida. I am really considering to advance my practice, however, I am exploring a different track other than being an NP, which is becoming a PA. I know, I am an RN, and people say the best route is to go to NP school. I have couple friends that are going to DNP school, and to be honest, I am not excited with the curriculum that most DNP program offers (1-2 years in theory/writing assignments, and 1 year of clinical). That is why as of now, I am more inclined to do PA program due to it being only 1 year of theory, and 1 year clinical. Is there anyone here that goes to PA school from nursing? Or if anyone have any advice or tips to tackle this struggle? Thank you!

    UF accelerated BSN Summer 2019

My guess is that they are just trying to fill up the space. UF nursing program is definitely trending down compare to decades ago where they actually teach and care about their students. Nowadays, its all about the admission and money they can get. A lot of nurses at UF Health Gainesville prefers to precept Santa Fe student rather than UF student. That tells you the quality of the program. A lot of UF nursing alumni will agree in the quality of their program. So, its up to you.

You will be the 4th cohorts in Jacksonville. Have you tour UCF campus? If yes, it might have much better resources than UF Jax. Go tour both places and make your decision that way.

For those who are wondering about petition process, I honestly do not know how they are dealing with that now. I went to UF Nursing school 2017-2018 year, and after that they changed all the application process. So I don't know and don't want to give you guys wrong information. My best bet is to go see Kenneth or whoever the advisor is in person and explain to them. Honestly, I did not have good experience with my nursing education with UF (and mostly 90% of the past and current students will agree). But I am now a nurse because of them, so I am not going to say anything. Good luck for everyone!

    UF accelerated BSN Summer 2019

I did my BSN in 2017-2018 year, and I started working part=time (2 days/week) as a CNA in Gainesville on the weekend every week while doing my nursing school in Jacksonville. I did that because no one is paying my tuition, so I had to get money and experience. One of my classmates worked full-time, commute everyday from Palatka for classes/clinicals, and have a son. And she did that throughout all 15 months of nursing school. So my answer, it is possible to work during the program. Is it hard? Yes. The question to you is, how badly do you need the money/experience. Will it be worth it working as a CNA first? Yes, you will be a better nurse because of it.

    Advice for new Ped-Hemonc Nurse

Thank you for your writing this to me. A lot of people that I talk to about this keep asking me why I want to be working in a very depressing field, and sometime those comments get into my head. However, I keep telling myself that becoming a pediatric oncology nurse is the reason why I want to be a nurse, and here I am, starting my career in this field next month. I acknowledge that it will be a challenge, but also very rewarding. Thank you again.

    Advice for new Ped-Hemonc Nurse

Hi everyone, I am starting my position as a new GN at Pediatric Oncology unit next month. Is there any advice from experience ped-hemonc nurse here for me? Anything from how to prepare myself before starting, how to deal with parents or dying children, what books to read before and during my training, and what to look for in this population. Thank you very much! I am excited and nervous at the same time.

One of the benefits being a UF Nursing student is that you are in the middle of two Level 1 trauma center in north Florida (UF Health Jax and Gainesville). Both hospitals will take preferences of hiring their students. The CNO for UF Health Jacksonville spoke to us that the reason why they are creating the Jax program is to hire the students to be UF Jax nurses. And she can be reached by email if you have questions about hiring etc. The same with Gainesville, the hospital will offer something called Graduate Nurse Bash at Hilton Gainesville where ALL nurses manager from ALL units will be there to speak with students and accept your resume. During that bash, you will have the opportunity to make an guarantee interview with 2 units of your choice. Most students will have an offer in April and the unit will hold your position until you get your license. That gives peace of mind if you are anxious about finding a job after school. In Jacksonville, only UF students and Chamberlain students get to do rotation at UF Health Jax. And only UF Students will be taught how to use EPIC which is the electronic medical record. So as a UF students, you will work with the preceptor and you are able to documents your assessment and the preceptros will co-sign it. Other students will not have that opportunity.

Honest opinion? Both Jax and Gville students will tell you that they dont prepare us enough. It is "learn your own" kind of thing. Remember, UF has done this for a while, and if they have not fixed anything until now, they are doing something wrong. I chose UF because I graduated from UF and I love to be a Gator, but if I knew about this, I would have chosen something else. Talk to your friends, and hear their pro and cons. Don't just listen to me. Talk to other students. Regardless, nursing school is hard enough. Being in Jacksonville where we don't get any resources for anything, that makes it harder. Well, I am 6 months away! Whoop Whoop!

DOnt remember when you start, just google UF course schedule 2017-2018. I think it will be May 14. But could be wrong. From what I heard, y'all will have two of the hardest courses combine into one semester. Pathophysiology and pharmacology. These are your core courses, so study hard. students failed this classes and had to drop from the program. I honestly do not know what the schedule will be, one thing for sure, y'all will get everything better than we are. We all complained a lot of stuffs and demanded change, unfortunately, UF listened and will change starting the next cohort. So lucky you! Like I said, how bad do you want to be a nurse? We have one person who live 1 hour away, that commute to school every morning and after school, and have a full time job. And she still excel in her study. So know yourself, and you decide. It can be done.

bookwise? I personally used pdf and got older edition or rent. The books are expensive enough, and I get by without buying the books they require. they will tell you that books are mandatory. NOT! you can find the pdf. The only books you need to buy is the one that has online access for homework or quiz. otherwise? Don't buy the book. During orientation they will try to sell you bundles. Save yourself some money and get it online if you prefer hardcopy.
