UF ABSN Summer 2021

Published

Hey all!

I wanted to start an offical thread for those applying to UF's accelerated BSN for the Summer of 2021! I know its still pretty early but I thought we could use this platform to support one another and share our own journeys through this process.

I am pretty nervous for this process. However, UF's hollistic approach toward each of its applicants gives me hope and reassurance.

Just a little about myself

I am currently finishing my last semester at USF. My last 60 hr credit GPA is pretty average as per UF's usual standards standing at about a 3.4. My cumulative is not too great so hopefully I am not penalized for having a low overall GPA. I have research experience and a publication to my name so hopefully that may hold some weight. Besides that, I have a lot of various volunteer experiences that are non-health care related.

I was specifically curious to know how much weight health care experience holds for admissions. I worked as a scribe for about one year where I was able to gain perspective into the nursing field eventually influencing my decision to pursue nursing. Besides that, I don't really have very much experience working directly with nurses or CNA's for that matter.

I was also curious to know more about the HESI A2 test if anyone knows more about that.

I would love to hear about everyone elses stats and experiences, how you are going about the admissions process in general.

Good luck to everyone applying this cycle!

I just sent an email to --------------------. I guess they are doing this to somehow speed up the process by releasing some of the decisions, but it is very very VERY unfair on the rest of us! They know that we are connected here in this platform.

Don’t lose hope guys. I’m not sure the reasoning behind this, but they’re still going to send out more acceptance emails. My heart breaks for you all.

Thanks so much, Elizaveta S for emailing --------------. I tried calling him earlier today, but no luck so I emailed him. Did he email you back saying that they’re just trying to speed up the process by releasing some decisions today? ? Gosh, you’re absolutely right.. it really is unfair to release some and not all, especially since they’re aware of our connection in this platform... Anyways, I’ll be sure to also share an update when I do hear something back. Thank you, Lauren McDonald for your words of hope. I really am hoping that they’re just sending a few emails at a time and that there’s still hope for the rest of us. Rest well, everyone. ??

Hello,

A reminder:

There are two approved ways of creating a special area for your cohort on this site.

One: create a facebook page. This link may be posted.

Two: create a "club" for your cohort by clicking on the Breakroom link in the yellow bar to the left of this page. Then click on “Create A New Club” in the green bar at the top of the page, and follow instructions.

References to other than these two avenues will be moved from view, to comply with the Terms of Service.

Thank you.

Out of curiosity - for those that selected “no preference” like I did, did any of you get Gainesville?
And if so, did anyone actually prefer Jax?

I selected no preference and actually wanted Jax and that’s what I got. I think a lot of people either specify Gainesville campus or no preference, so more people who chose no preference end up in Jax

Weird question, but is anyone who got into the Gainesville campus looking for an apartment?

Good afternoon  my friends,

Hope everyone’s doing well. I see a lot of excitement in this thread (congratulations, again to those who have been admitted, there’s a bright future ahead for you all INCLUDING for those who have not heard back, your time will come ???) and a lot of disappointment. It’s been a long night for all of us, especially to those who have been left in limbo wondering including myself. I wanted to let you all know that I did email --------------------------- yesterday, but have not received a response yet. I’m sure him and many others on his team are working as diligently as possible to get the remaining emails out.

A little bit about me for those who are maybe just tuning in, or looking back at this comment within the near future, this was my second time applying to this program. I have already mentally prepared myself to be disappointed, but also know it is NOT the end of the world, so just keep that in mind. My first time applying I had already earned both my BS and MS in Health Education & Behavior at the University of Florida. I am a 2x Gator Alumni and very very proud of it. My undergrad GPA is 3.65 (I always thought it was 3.56 LOL) and my graduate GPA is 3.3. During this application cycle, the HESI exam was not required. I also had 2 years of clinical work experience and three letters of recommendation (1 Doctor, 1 APRN, and 1 Professor).

For this application cycle 2021, I had two wonderful letters of recommendation wrote by two awesome Medical Doctors (MD). One wrote by a former professor and the other wrote by a coworker. I wrote a statement reflecting upon all my clinical work experience for the past 4 years (currently working as a clinical program manger for UF Health) and of course, I took the HESI exam. I scored a 74% overall on that test.

What brought my score down was the math, my biggest weakness. I know, some of you are like “how do you manage the screw up the math section, it was so easy!” Well, I just didn’t study for it. It’s that simple. Not going to sugar coat it because it is what it is now. With that being said, ----------------- had also informed me that even the most qualified applicant gets declined, which I know where I stand and I’m okay with it. Let’s face it, we all know where I screwed up LOL!

My point is, there’s always going to be at least ONE thing that these programs will use to weed you out; therefore, it is EXTREMELY important to be 100 about EVERYTHING you bring to the table. This ABSN program does not provide a set score for the HESI exam, but that’s doesn’t mean you shouldn’t study for it or skip one section. At first, we were emailed that there was no limit to how many times we take the exam. So, I took advantage of it. Unfortunately, that email was then quickly retracted and we were then told we can only take the HESI exam ONE time per application cycle. That’s when I was like “ohh, fudge...” Going back to the whole “it’s not the end of the world,” it really isn’t because we ALL have our own time zones that we live in, and I am living in my own and aware it’s not my time right now, but that also doesn’t mean NEVER.

Here’s what I mean and I pray that you all find some peace and comfort within the following words wrote by Rossana Perassolo:

New York is three hours ahead of California but it does not mean that California is slow, or that New York is fast. Both are working based on their own ‘Time Zone.’

Someone is still single. Someone got married and ‘waited’ 10 years before having a child, there is another who had a baby within a year of marriage.

Someone graduated at the age of 22, yet waited 5 years before securing a good job, and there is another who graduated at 27 and secured employment immediately.

Someone became CEO at 25 and died at 50, while another became a CEO at 50 and lived to 90 years.

Everyone works based on their ‘Time Zone.’ People can have things worked out only according to their pace. Work in your ‘Time Zone’.

Your Colleagues, friends, younger ones might “seem” to go ahead of you. May be some might “seem” behind you.

Don’t envy them or mock them, it’s their ‘Time Zone’. You are in yours.

Hold on, be strong, and stay true to yourself.

All things shall work together for your good.

You are not late.

You are not early.

You are very much On time.

You are in Your Time Zone.

Now, after reading the above, my husband recently received a major business opportunity; therefore, I cannot just up and quit my job to attend nursing school because first and foremost, I am his wife. I need to be there to support him and to build our business together which of course, requires money. Accelerated BSN programs like this are typically full time and will often require many of us to not work (I understand if you need to, we gotta do what we gotta do to pay them bills and keep food on the table) and I am one of those that would not be able to manage.

Everything happens for a reason. And maybe, you all will find your reason and purpose within your life.

I wish everyone the best of luck in your future endeavors and I am forever grateful and proud to have met you all within this platform and to be of support. Sending you all my love, positive energy, and prayers.

God bless you all and go and become brilliant Nurses!! ???

I managed to speak with someone from the faculty staff. The main advisor we communicate with is not responding to my email (granted, there has been less than 24 hr passed since I sent it), nor he picks up the phone.

However, I spoke to someone else. It's not 100% information, she is not sure, but she said it might be early next week that we hear from them. How is that for an update?

I took my time to nicely deliver my message about how it affects those that didn't get the letter. That at this point, it is not about acceptance to me, a lot of us, I believe, but about being treated the same.

I asked her very nicely to take extra few minutes to deliver this message to the person responsible for this process. I consider writing an email to the dean or anyone else in charge. And my message would not be about acceptance, and I don't even care about it at this point. But about my experience. And it is terrible. I have been treated like I'm in a third-world country, with zero equality and zero respect.

Ladies, I'm sorry they are putting us through this. We didn't deserve it. I regret finding out about this forum. I would be clueless right now if I didn't have access to this. I wouldn't know if I was treated differently from the rest. I would be just expecting for an email to pop up with a yes or no.

However, this experience is offensive, undeserving, uncalled for, and very unprofessional, to say the least. Maybe those negative comments had some truth to it, after all.

Thank you for all your efforts. I too have not received a response from our advisor, but will continue to remain patient. I agree with all your words and I pray for those left in limbo (including myself) receive an explanation for this experience as it shall be my last. ????????????????????

There it is.

Alright guys, I received an email back from our advisor and it is as we all suspected. He said that they have released admission decisions to a select number of applicants and all those seats are currently accounted for based upon the number of available seats within the program. As of now, they are pending final confirmation of each students’ acceptance.

He also said should seats become available, they may contact those applicants who have not yet received a notification of their status to fill those available seats. Once they’ve confirmed their acceptance of the available seats, then they will release final decisions to all applicants that are still waiting to receive an update.

I’m so sorry guys, but there is still some hope, especially if some students declined their acceptance, but I’ve made my peace with it and I hope you all find yours. Take good care and good luck. ???

Just something I wanted to share with future applicants corresponding to a previous comment I made regarding the HESI exam which also correlates with the level of disorganization many applicants witnessed. Nothing against the advisors, but this was a big concern for me that I wanted to put out there. I had mentioned in a previous comment that the first email that was sent out to us stated that we could take the HESI exam as many times as we like. Then, that email was quickly retracted by a second email letting us know that we are only allowed to take the exam ONCE per cycle. This is not a retaliation, only for awareness because these emails put a lot of pressure on me personally. I am not the best standardized test taker and have always needed at least two attempts to successfully pass these types of exams such as the GRE for my master’s degree. Anyways, the images are available below for whoever to view.
