2020 UCSF PMHNP, PNP, FNP programs

Published

Hey there,

Just wanted to start a thread on students applying to UCSF NP programs for 2020. I'd love to know what program you applied to and any updates on acceptance letters or any communications made by the University.

About me. I applied to the PMHNP program. I am an ED nurse but I have always enjoyed mental health. I applied and haven't heard anything at this time, however, from previous years, the letters start rolling in around the end of March.

Keep me posted,

Samuel

Besides getting the welcome letter, has anyone heard any specifics about any next steps? Tuition, syllabus, any pre assigned learning, etc.?

Hey guys,

I'll be starting the PNP-AC program at UCSF this fall too. I don't know anyone in our cohort yet, so I made a facebook group to hopefully relay some information to each other about classes, pre-clinical requirements, etc. Here is the link below:

Hope to meet you guys soon!

Congrats to all who've started at UCSF. How is it going? I would like to apply to the PMHNP program and am wondering how you all like it. Is it all in person or hybrid? I know covid has changed a lot of things. Gotta look into an online stats class beforehand. Could anyone recommend an online stats course?

@eochoa30 Finishing first quarter this week of the PMHNP program! Right now, everything is online. Classes are either pre-recorded and you can listen to it whenever you want, or live at a certain time every week. All of the quizzes are online, there's online discussion forums and papers are submitted through turn it in. The only time I have stepped onto campus is to pick up my ID badge, and that is it. I would much rather have in person class to get to actually know my peers and be engaged in class, but it is what it is, and the staff truly do care and want you to do the best and they take class and professor evaluations very seriously. People are also beginning clinical now, and that is great! The school will find and place you, so no worries having to find your own or anything. Some people are even doing tele psych for their rotation so that's neat.

As far as stats class goes, I think they'll take a stats transcript if you've taken it within the last 5 years. Mine was past the 5 year mark, so I took my stats class at University of Phoenix. It was pricey (like 1k?) but it was 5 weeks long, super easy (like it was a joke how easy it was- and I learned nothing, but I got the letter grade necessary for the program).

Good luck!

Wow, that's crazy it's all online now. I was looking into other online programs, but I don't think they beat the prestige of UCSF. I'll definitely look into Phoenix's stats class then! haha Thanks very much your reply.

Yeah it's so weird, hopefully things get better and we can do in-person classes again, but good luck and stay safe! Best wishes to you

Thanks so much and same to you! Yes, returning to in-person would be best. Hopefully that happens soon!

@Ihaveacatare you currently attending the post-masters tract for PMHNP? I'm interested in applying to UCSF and was wondering about work/life balance and if there are any CRNAs in your co-hort. Congrats for nearing the end of your first quarter!

@mCRNA I’m in the masters tract for pmhnp, but there are two that are post masters that I know of. I’m not sure how the post masters tract differs from the masters, but were in a few of the same classes so far. I don’t know of any CRNAs to be honest. There’s a good mix of RNs with experience (psych, oncology, ICU, neuro, etc) and a good chunk are actually MEPN students (they completed a masters entry nursing program at UCSF, took their NCLEX and went directly into NP Program, so no bedside RN experience).

as far as work goes, the school recommends no more than 20 hours per week and they said their evidence shows that grades begin to drop for student who work > 20 hours. Personally, I quit my full time to focus on school and I’m just working my per diem gig, but I do know a very few that are working their regular hours and are passing (not sure if they have a social life though). With just working my per diem gig, I would say I have a good mix of work-school-social life balance without feeling like I’m sacrificing anything, but to each their own

the faculty truly want you to succeed and take feedback very seriously! With the curriculum being online right now, they’re very flexible and understanding as well and a lot of faculty still have office hours. Many stay live after class on zoom to answer any questions we have too! So if people ever feel like they’re falling behind, the faculty are very supportive flexible

I'm rambling at this point, but I hope it was helpful! Best of luck to you

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback- you definitely weren't rambling- it was very informative and just what I needed! Thanks again!

I applied for the Multi campus PMHNP @ UCSF in November.

what is the the process of acceptance or denial?

How is the program?

would I be able to work my 24hrs a week current position?

Thank you!
