Hello! I know it's a little early, but I just wanted to start a thread for UCSD's New Grad Nurse Residency program that's set to start in November 2023. It looks like there is going to be a webinar on June 7th, and applications will start on (or after) June 16th.

Hey guys, gonna go put myself out there and ask for help from my fellow newbie nurses — I'm new to SD and looking for some insight! I graduated in May and moved from Colorado in July. My CA RN license is approved and I've applied to all the new grad residencies in the area with no luck so far. I worked as an OB scrub tech for the last 2 yrs, so have applied to L&D, but have also applied to the med surg units. I've been "referred to hiring managers" like so many of you so still holding out for UCSD this fall, but wondering where do you go from here if no luck???♀️ Where else should I be applying? Do most people just wait for the next cohort to apply again? Is this normal?!? Colorado is so fast in licensing and everyone has jobs months before graduating. There's really large new grad cohorts with rolling start dates (aka everyone gets offered a job pretty much asap with little to no competition!). SD has seemed to be such a different beast as a new grad. Esp not having clinicals, preceptorships, jobs, etc at any of these hospitals. Thanks tor hearing me out & would love to just hear about other's experiences or your input for anyone willing to share or get in touch(: A continued good luck to everyone!!
You are very much so not alone!! SD and california in general is likely the most saturated state for new grad nurses but in addition to that, as I see you've already noticed, there are a TINY amount of spots. I originally moved from Kentucky in June and faced the same problems as you and a lot of others. Even with over a decade of history with one of the hospitals as a family member and volunteering, it didn't seem to help much. My first round of applying was for June/July/August cohort at almost every hospital in the area. I received almost no word in that round. This past cohort was my second time and I did end up getting a place in Med Surg at Kaiser. Frustratingly, it's pure chance I believe. If you're able to just keep trying, I say do it until you can't! That's what my plan was. You're doing everything right, it's 1000% not a reflection of you or your abilities - again it's random and more luck than anything. The only advice I have is to keep learning and getting certifications in the area(s) that interest you as that's probably what sets applicants apart the most (or even at all). We are all rooting for you and remember you are definitely not alone! ??

Seems crazy as I just wrote that this morning, but I actually just got a call from UCSD for an interview on Postpartum!
Do you know how many spots they have available for perinatal specifically? It would be amazing if we both got selected!
