Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi friends!

Anyone applying to the UCLA MSN-Advanced Practice program for Fall 2014? I applied for the FNP program. I figured we could use this thread to chat and update each other!

Thanks!

Does anyone know when the exams for the summer quarter classes are? I am planning ahead of time as to when to fly back home and would like to have an idea as to when and how often the exams would be. Would appreciate any feedback on this. :-)

Are classes for the first quarter of the FNP program typically on Tues and Wed?

When are the orientations held for grad students? Thanks!

Has anyone received financial aid for Fall 2014?

UCLA FNP Class of 2016

Fall 2015 applicant here! Do you all know if RN experience is required to be competitive for the FNP program? Is there anyone in the program right now that does not have RN experience and came straight from a BSN or MECN program? And if so, is GPA considered more highly in that case or LORs?

Also, is PNP a pretty competitive program as well? Or is FNP more competitive admissions wise? Thanks!

RN experience is definitely makes you more competitive for the UCLA program. I don't know any MECNs who were able to go straight from their program to an advanced nurse program

I graduated from the program this year. Clinicals don't start until the second quarter. One day of clincal for the second and third quarter; two days of clinical in fourth and fifth quarter, three days in sixth quarter.

All on-campus classes that are part of the core curriculum are held Tues-Thurs. The second quarter is the heaviest in terms of classwork and exams, and then it gets better from there.

Hi, All! I was wondering when are you guys planning to take an elective? Is anyone thinking of taking the N 220 this Fall?

Those of you who are currently attending the program, what are your thoughts/feedback? How is the program organized? Where do you do the majority of your rotations? Do you have any say as far as elective rotations? Thanks!

Three weeks into the second quarter, Pachinko. That's music to my ears.

Yes, experience most definitely makes you more competitive. Being a UCLA BSN or MECN is also in your favor, as they know you survived one round, you have proven yourself, and you are a safe gamble for them to offer a seat to. I applied to the NP program almost right out of the MECN program, with only 1 year of ICU experience (in a trauma/transplant/surgical ICU at a level 1 trauma center), and started with 2 years of RN ICU experience. In that first year of work, I had joined 2 research studies with the Dept of Critical Care Surgery at my hospital, was my unit's UPC co-chair, and was doing lots of volunteer work. So all in all, being fresh out of school might not be a deal breaker, and I certainly also brought a lot to the table where I lacked true RN experience. Once I started the ACNP program, I initially felt weak with regards to clinical experience compared to some of my classmates with 5-10yrs of ICU experience. But then again, I can kill it when it comes to writing research papers (from my experience as a MECN). Also, my short time in the super diverse ICU that I work in has actually brought me more experience than I initially felt I had, and now I feel pretty strong and equivalent to my classmates. Well, except the ED nurses - those guys can diagnose anything based on a few symptoms and made us all look bad first quarter haha. But by second quarter, we were all on par with each other :)
