Is anyone applying to the Fall 2012 program ? I have a few questions and I think it would be good to share our concerns regarding the application process here.

I am a preschool teacher and I am applying for 2012. Have very little healthcare volunteer experience and wondering if that really maters. I have some experience looking after a family member who had a stomach surgery and chemo.

GozXamaica--thanks! Just took a look--on the application it says that you need to be nominated by your department in order to be considered---is this true? How does it work? Is everyone else considering applying for the scholarships/fellowships?

That appears to be correct, but we still need to complete the application. I didn't think I qualified for any of the fellowships, so I didn't apply to any in my application. Now after reading it again and again. There appears to be one of the fellowships I could qualify for. :rolleyes: I'm going to read it again.

I wish I had applied in my MECN application because the admissions committee would have seen it all together with my application information. It's still not too late to apply.

Also, I have some prerequisites I plan to take in Spring and I believe that I could make my GPA go up.

It seems that clarification could require a call or email to the department. But I've written them so much, that I don't want to be a pest. Hmmm. Whom could I contact?

By the way, anyone have any idea how many people applied to MECN this year? I think that it is significantly lower than last year. That's just a hunch.

Yes, it is true that you will need to be nominated by your department. I "think" the faculty decides who they want to nominate. I applied for the fellowship and I have submitted my paper work along with my application. Gl!

hello, everyone! this is my second time applying to MECN. i won't lie... i was totally crushed when i was rejected last year. it was the only school i was able to apply to at the time because i was still finishing up two prereq courses. i think it was a blessing in disguise because it gave me the chance to seek out healthcare experience and find out if i'm really cut out for nursing. i'm now a CNA at a hospital and i love it.

hopefully the second time's the charm. best of luck to everyone!! see you all back here in march after letters are sent out!

@lilpeapods-Why do you think you were rejected? Is it because of your outstanding prereqs or lack of experience, etc? If you don't mind me asking...

Does anyone know when we'll be hearing from UCLA? I saw some people mention March, but couldn't find anything on the website. I've heard back from the other program I applied, just wondering when UCLA will let us know.

Hey everyone! Just now getting around to posting. I've been stalking the forum for a bit. I applied to the MECN program for 2012 and UCLA is now my top choice (after finding out that my specialty at UCSF lost funding :( )

UCLA is my alma mater, so I'm excited to potentially go back.

Wondering what the range of experience is for those who applied for '12. As for me - I worked for about ten years in ads/marketing. 3 years of which were at a very popular company based in silicon valley. I quit my job a little over a year ago to pursue nursing. I volunteered for a year on the neuro floor at Stanford Hospital, got my CNA, and have been working as a clinical data analyst at oakland children's and also lucile packard. I have A's (even some A+'s to my surprise in courses like Chem and Micro!) in all of my pre-reqs and my undergrad GPA was a 3.5.

I'm biting my nails until I find out whether or not I was admitted!

@nfigueroa4 - I believe we hear by mid-March...

@anewnurse79 University of San Diego is my top choice. As for experience, you're a bit above me on that one, I'm currently an undergrad student at SDSU, but I'm graduating in May with my bachelor's in public health. I've got decent grades, but my GRE wasn't too strong. As for medical experience, I've been volunteering at Sharp Chula Vista as an MICU and meal mate volunteer.

@nfigueroa4 you have great experience! Plus, it's always a crapshoot as far as what these schools are looking for.

I took the GRE just for UCSF (sigh). I actually did better than I thought I would have, so I was actually kind of bummed that UCLA didn't require it.

Good luck!

@danceluver -- i was told that my application was very competitive but that they went with people who had finished all their prerequisite courses. i was also told that my background was "unusual." my background was in the arts and i had absolutely no healthcare experience other than caring for my terminally ill mom. perhaps they couldn't be sure that i was totally committed to a career change? it's hard to say what goes through their minds!!

Hello everyone!

I, too, have been stalking this forum and am anxiously waiting to hear back! I'm worried that I won't get in because I lack real healthcare experience. I tried volunteering at the hospitals in my area but they all wanted volunteers who could commit for a full year, which I couldn't do since I am an undergrad student out of state. I've been trying to make up for that by working in the bio department at my school. I currently have been a lab assistant for the anatomy, microbiology, and molecular cell biology labs, and was asked this past semester to TA the Nursing Microbiology course at my school. I also have been conducting research with a professor on campus and had an internship at a pharmaceutical company this past summer. I'm not really worried about the grades, and my essay and letters of rec were strong. I just really hope they don't see me as just a "lab-minded" person, because I really do want to be a nurse!

I have also applied to UCLA'S MECN FALL 2012 program. I currently have my bachelor's in progress and received an email to send my transcripts to them as soon as my bachelor's is posted in May, but admission decisions are made is March? Or so I'm reading...

@SusieAke

Are you still taking prerequisite courses? Because I had to send in my transcripts from this past fall semester, since I was finishing up prereqs, but I haven't heard anything about sending in my transcripts once I receive my bachelor's. I feel like that would be something you would do if you were accepted...

Just curious, what's your major?
