It's that time of year again! I am planning on applying for the Fall 2019 quarter. The summer 2018 information sessions are now open. Who else is applying ?

If there are any current/past UCLA MECN students frequenting the forum: how did you guys fund the program? I talked to the financial aid advisor and was estimated to only be offered ~10k in scholarship and like 44k in loans for just the first year alone. I'm carrying ~30k in debt from my first bachelor's and am scared I won't be able to dig myself out of it by the end of the program (30k + 43k + 43k = 116k).

For future students frequenting this forum: how are you guys planning to pay for the program? I'm in a rut trying to figure out my finances. ?

I'm also worried about the loan amount. However, I heard from a past mecn student that she frequently spoke to the financial aid advisor about scholarship opportunities during her time in the program. Due to this, she was only about 50k in debt rather than 100k+. Hope that helps!

Also, have you received an official paper letter in the mail from the graduate division? I have not gotten an official email nor paper letter but I was able to read my official letter online and I SIR/SLR'd already. Just want to make sure before I follow-up with the department.

You got even more in scholarship than I did lol. BTW, I’m not sure if you’re aware but the estimate given doesn’t even include summer session. The estimate is only for a 9-month academic period. I was told it was about $4600 or so, and of course factor in books, parking and living expenses. :(

That's a lot of scholarship $$! I will definitely keep an eye out for scholarship opportunities! If everything works out with scholarship & living frugally, hopefully I won't have to pull out too much in loans. ?

I have not received anything in the mail as far as I know! Seems like there's a hold on my account atm because of my transcripts though.

Lol I'm wondering if the estimated amount is guaranteed if we apply for scholarship in May/June though? Craig just gave me the estimate of 10k, but I'm not sure if this amount is guaranteed... But yeah, this is turning out to be much more expensive than I thought. ? hahaha I guess it's gonna be pb&j for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next couple of years!

He told me it wasn't set in stone...I could possibly get more. But then again I'm getting the bare minimum. Honestly, I don't think anything is set in stone because it's an "estimate." Also, I think your EFC from your FAFSA will be the most important factor.

For those of you wondering about financial aid they can't really tell you how much you are getting until sometime in August. In June, you will apply for financial aid and you will get somewhere between 5k-15k depending on your financial need (the applications have an essay part where you make your case about needing money etc). Everyone gets something unless you don't apply it really does depend on your financial need (if you currently work but are no longer working, there is a section where you can explain if and why your income is going down).

For those of you wondering about working, I worked about 15-20 hours for the first quarter and did good managing work and school although it is complicated. School scheduling forced me to leave my job (we had class on the days my job required me to be working) and I gotta say that it was the best decision for me. Winter quarter is pretty crazy and I cant imagine having done it while working without loosing my sanity although it can and has been done (some of my classmates still work and you can tell they are a bit overwhelmed).

Someone was commenting on the 74% passing grade requirement and yes, we are the first class to fall under those changes and while it is great you have to remember that there are many other requirements to pass a class. Some classes require that you pass lab and even if you have 100% in the lecture part of the class you cannot pass unless you pass the lab component. It is also true that you can be put in a 3 year plan if you fail one class but from what I understand they determine that on a case basis and its not like you can fail "a couple" of classes, from what I remember you can only fail one.

Overall, the program is good (although all the changes have made our cohort experience a lot of tweaking and chaos), its challenging at times but totally doable. You have a lot of resources, a lot of help and most professors want you to succeed.

Good luck to everyone!

Do ya'll know if anyone has received an update of their position on the waitlist?

I still haven't heard anything. I am getting a little worried but I know what is meant to be will be.

Does anyone know when the date that the MECN program will begin in the fall?

The 2019-2020 calendar says that the Quarter begins Monday, September 23 and then says instruction begins Thursday, September 26. Not sure if the program starts Monday (because it's a nursing program) or if it starts Thursday like everyone else.

I think in an e-mail they mention a mandatory graduate student orientation on Thursday, August 1st + another clinical orientation sometime in September! Just other important dates to keep in mind!!
