UCLA MECN Fall 2011

Published

Hello,

I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.

Im applying to about 7 schools, which means lots of letters of rec. I have 4 people writing multiple letters. Since every school has a different req for recommendations, I prepared a packet for each person and I printed the forms or instructions with due dates for the letters of rec for each school. As the deadlines approach, I email my recommenders in about a month in advance. They were all very understanding and pleased that I had given them organized instructions for when to submit the letters. Just make the process for them as easy as possible...

I am applying to 10 schools, so I was very nervous about having to ask for so much. Luckily, the written forms are very similar and the same letter can be used for all. I did the exact same packet method, which they were all very thankful for, especially the professor who is teaching two classes this semester. She was extremely grateful, as she told me others who had asked her just came in with recommendation forms and scribbled instructions--no envelopes, no stamps, no notice of which form recommendations also need an attached letter or from which schools she should be looking out for an email. I hope my blatant organization compared to the rest earns me some extra positive comments:yeah:.

Does anyone know the guidelines for calculating your last 60 semester unit GPA? I know you are supposed to count backwards until you get to 60, but as I count backwards I get to 57 units one semester and then the next semester I get to 72 units.

I have a similar issue. My undergrad did quarter system. I spread out my classes during my junior and senior years, so to reach at least 90 units, I have to go into spring quarter of my sophomore year, which takes me to 93. I know this is more and that they probably don't care about sophomore year, but that's what I have to do to reach 90. I think I might send an email, but don't want to keep bothering them.

chantille-

that is what i did. I had to count back to spring quarter sophomore year and ended up with 92 units. But since I was technically considered a junior (unit wise) in my second year, I think there is no problem using units from this quarter.

Hello,

I am also applying to UCLA for next fall. Its great to see a thread opened up! Does anyone know how it works if you took classes after graduating from undergrad? I took a lot of my prereq courses after I graduated(in 2009) so I was hoping I can incorporate them into my 60 semester units.

I went to an information session, and they explicitly stated that the 60/90 units GPA must be calculated from the last two years of your bachelor degree. Your prerequisite grades, including those taken after receiving your bachelors, are considered separately.

Yay! We have a thread now :) Thank you, Sam198!

Anyone else still in the stage of crafting their personal statement?

And to answer someone's question: I know someone who previously put a note about when/how she'd complete her prereqs on the bottom of her personal statement.

I wish everyone luck in their applications!

Chantille, when you went to the info session do you remember if they mentioned anything about calculating from the last two years if you are currently finishing your final semester of your bachelors? Would you still calculate the last two years or the last year in a half?

I honestly am not sure. I don't remember them discussing this, nor anyone asking. I would email the coordinator to ask. Her contact information is available on the MECN website.

You are welcome! And I am still working on my personal statement- i just need to work on the multicultural aspect of it and then revise revise revise. But we still have about a month thank goodness : )

I also went to an info session in July, took notes which I recently reviewed and distinctly remember being told the last 90 qtr units or 60 sem units is what they want for the calculated undergrad GPA. I would assume that means the same thing whether or not you've finished your senior year. Hope that helps!

Thanks Curlyq. I ended up emailing the coordinator, so in case anyone else needs this info she said, "it is the most recent 60 units that have been completed at the time of application. We still look at 60 units, regardless of where you are at in your schooling."

And for everyone who gave me advice about requesting LOR's - THANK YOU! All my profs were very impressed by how organized everything was and they all agreed to write them for me!

What other schools are you all planning to apply to?
