Hello Everyone! Anyone applying for the MEPN Program at UC Irvine this year? Keep us updated if you receive any new information from the school! :)
Just got my official rejection letter. This means that I’ve been rejected from all 5 schools I applied to. I feel so lost now. I’m a graduate of UC Berkeley, trying to make a change in career from the legal field to nursing. I’m now unemployed because I’ve been volunteering at hospitals (thought it would help my application since I don’t have even a science background) and trying to get my first job as a nurse assistant ( hopefully that will help for next time). My grades round out to about a 3.5 GPA and got about half As and half Bs in the prerequisites. I thought my personal statement was really strong. Does anyone have any advice for things I could get involved in that would help my application next time around besides what I’ve already mentioned I’m doing? Please help, any ideas would help. Thank you.
@JustJane Hey! My biggest advice to you is to do your best to not compare yourself and your stats to others. I see people asking in all of these forums “share your stats” “what are your grades and backgrounds” and I’m telling you, that’s your worst enemy. Stop comparing yourself and see what you’re worth. I got rejected from UCI with no interview (which doesn’t even have that high of a nursing program) and waitlisted at Rush after I interviewed (which is #1 for their CNL). How does that make sense? It doesn’t. My biggest lesson in being rejected, waitlisted, and finally one acceptance was to believe in yourself and don’t give up the fight. Instead of being upset these schools didn’t pick you, feel bad for them because they missed out on a student like you. I went into an interview with this mindset and i got my first acceptance. You got this!!! Also, I had a group interview for one of my schools. Literally all of us had one thing in common, we ALLLLLLL failed before at getting into schools. Failures are your biggest lessons and it’s whats going to make you stronger than all other candidates. Use this as motivation to fight harder and come out even stronger. I’m telling you, it’s going to work out. You got this!!!! Okay sorry for my rant but I’m going to make a YouTube video on my experience and basically what I just wrote you. I think people need to hear that rejection is so normal and you’re going to come out even better. You’re gonna be a badass nurse soon. Keep going!
@JustJane I feel for you because I was there last year. I think many of us can relate. Last year I applied to 2 competitive schools (only 2 because of location) but thought I had a chance because I have a 4.0 in my pre reqs, great letters of rec, solid experience, etc. I was rejected from UCLA and waitlisted at USD but never made it off the waitlist. Half of me wanted to give up (time is precious- I didn’t want to wait another whole year!) but I just plugged along and got CNA certified. That’s all I really changed. I noted my persistence in my personal statement, reapplied to more schools this year, and got into USD, University of MD (top CNL program in the country). I’ll be going to USD (funnily enough I got rejected from UCI as well but it wasn’t my first choice). I really do feel UCI and many other programs were completely overwhelmed this year by the sheer amount of applicants.
My point is, things will eventually work out! Perfect grades don’t guarantee admission, and showing persistence by applying a second time goes a long way. Getting CNA certified went a long way for me. I also gave myself permission to sulk and be upset. It felt good to process my emotions and because I let myself feel them I was able to move on faster and get back on track. Applying for a second time was extremely stressful for me because of what was on the line, so I kind of just accepted that feeling and vented to whoever wanted to listen.
Getting into this type of program is SO tough and with the insane amount of applicants/ridiculously tough acceptance rates, you (and me last year) are in the majority when we received our rejection letters. Nothing’s wrong with you- just show you want this by enhancing your app a little and applying again and I have faith that you’ll get in somewhere!
Hey guys, congrats on the interview invite-- you're one step closer and should be very proud!
They ask you 4 questions and and you just record your answer...you don't talk to an actual person. You get 1 minute to think about your answer before you press start I believe from what I remember.
The questions I got were:
1) This is a master's program and requires a lot of time. What will you do to ensure that you succeed in our program?
2)Tell me a time you were in an ethical situation/dilemma
3) Tell me a time you resolved conflict
4) Why should we chose you
Best of luck, I'm sure you guys will do great!!
Hey everyone.. I hopped on here because I got hit with this random memory of AllNurses and how I used to peruse and banter on here all the time in a past life. Oh how time flies. I never got into UCI and actually after getting rejected here I took a long hard look at nursing, how long it'd take me to get prereqs done and get in somewhere, how expensive school is, etc... I went a different route and now I'm a software engineer loving what I do every day. Life is so funny. I hope everyone in this thread is enjoying their lives as nurses, or whereever else life may have led you if you're like me, and sincerely wishing everyone the best. Thanks for the nostalgia and cheers!
Heycalling, RN
