UCI MEPN Fall 2019

Published

Hello Everyone! Anyone applying for the MEPN Program at UC Irvine this year? Keep us updated if you receive any new information from the school! :)

Just submitted yesterday. UCI is my top choice, so fingers crossed!

Hey guys! Just started another thread about UCI because I didn't notice this one - whoops! Submitted my app last week, also super nervous as it's my top choice too! How you guys feeling about your app?

I'm not really sure how I feel, sometimes I feel confident but I have a lot of days were I feel like I have no chance haha! I graduated from UCSD in 2013 and have worked in the biotech industry since then. My healthcare experience is all volunteer. In terms of grades, I have a 4.0 in the prereqs I've taken at my local CC (which is most of them!) but I also have some less than stellar grades from my first two years of undergrad.

Ahhh I feel you on that! I'm in almost the exact same position as you lol! I graduated in 2017 with a behavioral neuroscience degree, 3.4 ? But also 4.0 prereqs so that's nice! I've been manager / lead tech of a neuropsychiatric clinic since before graduation and some volunteering so I've got some strong clinical experience that I'm hoping will give me some leverage but man that 8% acceptance rate is just brutal to see lol ? In any case I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Excited for us!! Hope we get the good news!

What kind of work have you been doing in biotech? And what made you want to become a nurse?

Sounds like we are in similar boats! Your job sounds interesting and really relevant to nursing, so hopefully that gives you a leg up!

My company focuses on products for innate immunity research, so I do a lot of cell-based assays and quality control work related to that. I decided to pursue nursing because I was super unhappy doing laboratory work and after doing volunteer work at a local clinic, I realized I wanted to do something in the healthcare field and nursing seemed like the perfect fit!

Where did you find the 8% statistic? I've looked all over for admissions stats but didn't seem to find any

Yeah thanks so much I'm hoping so! And that sounds awesome, immunology is really interesting but I can totally see how lab work might not be the most interesting thing in the world lol. Sounds like a great move I hope it works out for you :)

And yeah their website has changed like three times since I've had my eye on their program + it's such a new program so it hasn't been easy to find info haha. I roughly remember something along the following on their website:

- 3-400 applicants a year

- 40-50 interviews

- about 30 admitted for 28 or so spots

Don't remember the exact numbers but I know the real data was very close to this for past year or two. So pretty brutal chances but the best we can do is do our best!

FYI I was able to find their 2018 admission stats, and you were pretty close! 28 admitted (for 20 spots) out of 330 applicants, average GPA was 3.49.

Yikes - yeah that's what I remember seeing. Savage chances lol!

Hello everyone,

Does anybody have a guessestimate when the actual interviews will begin this cycle? Spring break booking problems over here ?

@Heycalling if i had to guess i would say they might be the week of the 11th or 18th... but thats purely a guess. UCI is on spring break the week of the 25th so I doubt they will be that week.

You are awesome coco1320 :) . Thanks so much for your input! Good luck to us all from here to mid April.
