Hello :)
Anyone else applying for UBC's September 2014 intake? If so, let's get through this process by communicating with each other!
However one thing I am really confused and hoping someone could clear this up... my gpa in my last 30 credits is 3.82, and in the email they sent it said that my gpa translates to an 80.3%? Does this seem right? I thought it would be more like an 85%.
I haven't heard anything yet, but am assuming the worst at this point. Sorry to hear you didn't get an interview this round.
The way UBC calculates GPA, a 3.82 should have put you in the range of 82-83% according to their site... (source: http://www.ubc.ca/okanagan/students/advising/academic-performance/gpa-equivalency.html) Unless the school of nursing has their own way of calculating equivalency. I also remember something being said at the info session about grades from other schools being weighed differently, but that was over a year ago so who knows.
Congratulations to all who got an interview invite! To those who didn't receive one, this is not the end of the road. As long as we keep chasing, we'll get there :)
I received an interview invite last week and my stats are quite humble compared to most of those I've read here. I have about an 80% average. My extracurriculars include school clubs (exec positions, event planning/execution), 2 co-op terms in scientific research, volunteer at 2 hospitals (4 different roles currently) where I directly assist hospital staff in their activities.
Anyone living in Vancouver and would like to practice for the MMI? My interview is on the 15th. I hope to meet some of you there!
I want to arrange an interview practice group on Wednesday, April 9--possibly in the morning or early afternoon. We can meet at UBC and go through MMI questions together and give each other input on how to improve our answers. I know it's competitive but if we could help each other out, we might have better chances of getting in. I already have practice questions gathered/prepared, so let me know if you'd like to meet up!
I have also made an email for the practice group if you don't want to register on this forum. It's [email protected]
My interview is on April 15.
That's a great idea pixelou! I'd love to join, I'll shoot you an email :) My interview is the next day on the 10th s prepping a little the day before would be a great way to prepare I think. Look forward to meeting you guys!
Sorry to hear for those of you that didn't get an interview I think a huge part of the supplemental application was judged on how you wrote it, not just your specific experiences. Several of my experiences had nothing to do with nursing (office job, waitressing, etc) but I made sure to include skills I learned from those jobs and how they would be beneficial in nursing (communication, teamwork, handling stress and criticism). If you guys are planning on reapplying for next year I think this made a huge difference in my application so hopefully it'll help you out as well :)
To those still waiting: there may be still hope. I was waiting for my rejection but to my surprise today I was actually contacted for an interview to be held on April 11. I was stunned, because I didn't think I had a chance. They gave me a deadline to reply of April 7, so there might be a chance that someone else might withdraw from the process?
My stats: I'm older than most of you, in my thirties, 2 arts degrees (undergrad and grad). A few years of working in non-profits and teaching ESL. SPCA volunteer. I think my average from my undergrad was around 84% or 85%. I'm also a writer and have things published here and there. I run a podcast and a blog. No health care experience, so imagine my surprise when I got contacted for an interview!
To those who didn't make it to the next round: I'm so sorry. You are worthy. You are good enough. These selections are really subjective and might depend on if they selection committee had a good day or bad day. Or they might be wanting a select number of people to fill in some gaps. Try again, try with other schools. Try again next year. If you want to be a nurse you can be one. Don't despair. Much love to you.
Great post AgathaKitty. I am doing my first year in the program. For those who rejected: apply next year, show them you are motivated. I got into the program with second attempt. First interview - rejection, second - acceptance with no wait list. (?????). Really seems like bad day vs good day, so don't blame yourself, selection process is very subjective, depends on who read your letter and who are the interviewers. Keep your emails on notification, crazy things happen, people decide not to go for the interview, I heard the story from previous cohort when someone on wait list was given a seat the day before the program started, because people pay 300$ deposits in two or more schools when they cant decide right away, then drop the program before it starts and the program sends email like: "we have a seat, first response will get it". The chance that people will decide not to go for the interview is there. Good luck to all of you guyz, see you in the program.
@20months, once you get to the interview, is the rest of your application "forgotten" or is it still calculated into your overall score?
During the info session in July, they said that your written application gets you the interview invitation, but then moving forward, they only look at your interview score to determine the acceptance list. That's my recollection - but anyone else please feel free to clarify as the info session was quite a while ago!
