UBC BSN September 2019 Applicants

Published

Hi everybody! I haven't found an active discussion thread for September 2019 applicants to UBC's BSN program yet, so here is one!

Thank you everybody for the comments about CASPer!!

It really lifts a burden on our shoulders to hear that the CASPer is apparently barely weighted -- I have mine on the 24th and I'm dreading it...

It's alright, sumad! We're all in the waiting game together!! Again, in the meantime I'll be taking Nursing prereq courses at Langara this summer as backup -- it would help to take my mind off the stressful admission decision process!

Which prerequisites are you taking at Langara? Are you applying to BCIT too?

I applied to Langara too, but unfortunately I didn't get in because my A&P prerequisite didn't qualify: I took A&P I and II through TRU online, and they require the lab component also (even though all the other schools don't!!!!!! ughh). What's more, they didn't list this anywhere on their website :(

Omg that really sucks, are you going to take A&P again for Langara? I'm also taking summer classes-- only if I don't get into UBC, UofT, or Queen's and if I do, i'll hopefully get a refund (I need academic writing for Langara nursing pre-req).

I just need to take ENGL 1127, ENGL 1129 or 1130 and STATS 1124 ?

I will be a part-time student for May-August since I intend to take only English in the summer (so I can have more free time/enjoy summer, and diversify volunteering if needed). Then I’ll take Stats with either English 1129 or 1130 in Winter Term (Sept-Dec) because friends/current Langara Nursing students told me that good Stats instructors are available in Winter.

UBC BIOL 153 transferred over to Langara as transfer credit, so I’m thankful for that.

Unfortunately I can’t apply to BCIT — my Chem 11 mark is 1% below the cut off! Haha

Oh no!! I’m guessing your online A&P had no lab component? It would suck to take A&P again! But think of it this way — you’ve been exposed to the material already, so it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to ace it the next time.

Hey sss29! I need academic writing/English as well! I plan to take Langara ENGL 1127 this summer (only if I don’t get into UBC Nursing, like you; but I’ve started my part-time student loan application early to save time).

We might run into each other on campus/take the same class.

Have you looked into BCIT as well? They have the equivalent English course which is offered both online and in-person! I'm still deciding between Langara and BCIT :( i know i only have a few days to decide because registration is soon

Oh man I know — I might be too late to apply/register for BCIT ENGL 1177 distance education (registration is Feb 20) :(

I stuck with Langara because it’s closer to where I live/I’m more familiar with the school, and current Nursing students at Langara (including my sister) advised me to take ENGL 1127.

If you choose Langara, I was told that Ameena Mayer, Trevor Newland and Gregory Holditch are the good/chill instructors.

Trevor’s summer classes are 8:30am—10:30am only two times a week though. Ameena and Gregory have reasonable times. Not so bad!

I don't think I will - BCIT and UBC both only require BIOL 1593 and 1693. Only Langara requires the lab components (BIOL 1595 and BIOL 1695) also. If it doesn't work out this cycle, i'll try again for BCIT's January 2020 cohort.

It sure is a long journey trying to get into nursing school!!

Do you know when you will find out about UofT or Queen's?

Oh no! That's too bad about that 1%. If you have taken any other university level chem courses, though, I believe they will look at those grades instead of Chem 11.. so it's worth thinking about!

Exactly, my A&P course has optional lab components that they offer once a year on campus (in kamloops!!), but BCIT and UBC don't require the lab components. So I was really surprised when Langara required them.

I'm thinking of doing LIBS 7001 at BCIT online in the summer too - it's part of the BCIT nursing curriculum. I'm thinking of signing up for it just in case (registration opens on feb 20th for this too so i have some decisions to make!)

Since it's just a prerequisite, I would really consider taking it at the school that is more convenient for you to get to and is cheaper!

Langara's pre-reqs are just super annoying at this point. I have to take that English just for Langara. BCIT waives the English pre-req if you have a degree :(. I'm also gonna try for BCIT's Jan 2020 cohort if I don't get in anywhere.

So Queen's sends out admissions randomly, I've heard that some people have already got accepted so it could go anywhere from now to the end of March. UofT sends out admissions 2 weeks before UBC does, and they only give you 2 weeks to accept/decline your offer of admission and pay a $500 deposit. I'm hoping UBC sends offers like a day before the UofT deadline

Yeah Langara's prereqs may be annoying! But I might as well get the prereqs done since fees are cheap, but I don't know about BCIT's costs. Again I'm heading to Langara because it's closer to me/more convenient (North Vancouver applicant here!), so seconding Sumad, definitely consider what's geographically/economically/personally feasible for you.

BCIT waiving English pre-req is out of the question for me -- I don't have a degree :( And I haven't taken A&P in the last THREE years for BCIT -- I took UBC BIOL 153 within the last FIVE years (Winter Session 2015/2016 was September 8 2015-April 29 2016) prior to Langara's application deadlines: Jan 31 2020 (for September 2020 intake) and May 31 2020 (for January 2021 intake).

**It took me a while to figure out what I truly wanted to do. Sigh.

So I don't know what I'll do if I don't get into UBC or Langara for the coming years because it means I'll have to take A&P all over again. I'm super nervous but hoping for the best at this point!!

Another hopeful here... just wanted to say hi to everyone! I’m not sure if I’m more nervous about my Casper results or my supplemental (is it possible to give ‘too much’ information?). Oh well! Fingers crossed for the next few months..
