UBC BSN September 2018 Applicants

Published

Hello fellow applicants!

I was browsing and did not see a thread for the 2018 UBC BSN applicants so thought I'd start one.

I am just finishing up my supplemental nursing application and hope to finish my application by the end of today and have already submitted my transcript. Just wanted to know who else is applying/GPA/past experiences with UBC/any tips or information for the application anyone wishes to share.

A bit about myself.. I am currently an LPN working at a hospital and also work part-time in retail in a leadership role, I do not have a Bachelor's degree but am applying anyways (hoping my supplemental weighs heavy in my favour). I have a GPA of 3.55 and will have ~30 credits at the end of this Fall term. I have some volunteer experience working with companies during their charity campaigns and am hoping to do more volunteer work this year. I will also be applying to BCIT, Langara and Queen's University once their applications open up.

Good luck to everyone and please share any information you're able too!

I just got accepted to U of T's nursing program. However, I'm unsure as to which program to select if I get into UBC as well. Is anyone else in the same boat/able to provide some advice?

Good luck to you all!

I think I'd consider where you ultimately want to live, and what the job markets are like in each province.

It seems lots of people get jobs on units where they did clinicals or their preceptorships. I suspect it's easier to move province to province after you've got work experience rather than as a fresh grad, so it would mean staying in that place for a while after finishing the degree. FWIW, BC seems to have a pretty good job market now. I don't know what's happening in Ontario.

I'm from Toronto and did my first undergrad at U of T as well!

I wish they would update the admissions blog. Still has the post from March about getting back to us by the end of April. :(

I am starting to get irritated by the wait. Why say end of April if it wasn't going to be? I know some people are lucky to be close to the university and have fairly open schedules but some of us might be making plans to move or have other "life stuff" to figure out now so that come August, if we get in, we are ready.

I get it. I actually live pretty close to the university, but I will have a ton of stuff to work out with my job and financing, etc. and it is not going to be easy. The sooner I find out, either it will be for me to figure everything out.

Does it feel to anyone else like being trapped with really terrible 'on hold/elevator' music? That's the only way I can describe the underlying daily feeling of waiting for that email...

Completely agree - I'm deciding on taking a different job if I don't get in this round. It's hard to make any decisions without know where I'll be in September.

I'm actually surprised that there isn't a deadline for university programs to send out offer letters to avoid the situation some of you are facing of having to accept/decline one before (potentially) hearing from other universities you've applied to. I only applied to UBC so it's all or nothing for me, but I feel for the situation you are in and don't think it's right.

Agree, agree, agree. And I just got a rejection yesterday from the other school I applied to (not a nursing program, just a different program) so I'm feeling the weight of this really needing to be right for me. And I'm with Hopeful_Nurse2018, feeling like if I don't get in I'm going to just end up working towards a different career option with the education I already have. Which isn't ideal in my mind, but I don't know if I can go through all this again. The wait is agony and I'm trying so so so hard not to be anxious but it feels impossible.

There are other options if you're up for the process that places like VCC and Douglas (and maybe KPU?) use - do the prerequisites, get on a waitlist, sit on your hands for a few years... not competitive like BCIT, UBC, Langara, but they could be options if Nursing is your passion long-term? I'm wait-listed for a different program so there's sort of a 'light at the end of the tunnel' (eventually), but like so many I'd prefer to go through UBC as I think it's the better option to pursue MN-NP later.

Are they RN or LPN programs? Do you end up with a BSN from them? Thanks!

BCIT, Langara, Douglas, KPU, VCC all have BSN programs.

There is also University of Fraser Valley & Trinity Western.
