UALR Nursing Program Applicant 2014

Published

I plan on applying for the ADN progam at UALR soon. I am a nervous reck. I know there are more people applying than spots available. I have about 96 quality points. I made an 84 on my evolve exam. I have a 3.5 gpa. I have taken most of my Support Courses except Chemistry and Microbiology. I am taking Micro in the spring and have to repeat chemistry b/c I made a D in it about 10 years ago. I'm scared that chemistry will ruin my chances. I have a prior bachelors degree. I was just wondering what shot do I have of getting in the program.

So, yeah, speaking of Nursing Fundamentals, UPS just dropped it off and Holy Summer School! It is about 1500 pages and 52 chapters. So do the math. 5 weeks = 300 pages and 10+ chapters/ week. :dead: I am definitely getting a jump start on this.

Hey love, I think we are only supposed to purchase the manual and that isn't available until Apr. 28

@arobinson48390 -- there's a book that you have to have as well. Kozier and Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing. It is a required text for the summer program. You can rent it from Chegg for $17.00 for the summer semester.

@NutriRx I think I'm going to start reading as well. Based on forums from prior years' classes, the manual will detail which chapters are presented when. The manual will be available Monday per the e-mail from the nursing dept. I'm guessing you are out of area, so I'd be happy to share the info from the manual when I get my hands on it.

Yes please. Thanks!

Congrats to everyone that's gotten in. You are about to start a wild ride. Take it from someone about to graduate next month. DO NOT RENT!!! EVER!!! The instructors will tell you at the beginning to keep your books. You will need them throughout the program. You have to have Kozier and Erbs for summer, but you heavily use it in adult 1 (1505) and some in almost every other nursing class. We just used it yesterday for our 9 hour leadership day. Same goes for the med surge book. We used it with every class. I'm currently in the competency for entry class that is the last 5 weeks before graduation. Its a class designed to review everything and get you ready for the NCLEX. During this class, you spent one week reviewing a semester class and then take a test (kind of like a final). So our first test was based on mental health and health promotion class. Second test was adult 1 and 2. Our third test next week is all peds/OB. Last test is critical care/leadership. Then the final 2 days later over everything in the entire program. So you will need every book for every class during the competency class.

K&E is a massive book. Our med surge book you'll get starting with 1505 is over 1700 pages. But you split that book between Adult 1, 2, and 3. OB was pretty massive too. Peds and Mental Health are a little smaller. There is just no way to get around it. There is a lot of reading. You have to learn to pace yourself.

@TiredKitten thanks for the advice. I kind of figured that we should buy all the books. I have heard of some nurses on this site actually say that referred to some of their nursing books while on the job years after becoming a nurse

TiredKitten, thanks for the info; for taking the time out from all of the studying that you must be doing right now (geeze :)). I did rent, as well, but they give you the option to buy the book at the end, so I'll work that out. Congratulations on graduation!

For those of you who have the handbook already, would someone mind telling me what the chapter lineup is, or if they will be going in order, please? If they are not in order, you don't have to list all 52 chapters, just maybe the first 15 or so. Thanks.

NutriRX, I have the manual, but I do not see that chapter lineup or anything about the textbooks in it. I'm sorry. I haven't read the whole thing but I looked through for you and I'm just not seeing it.

how are you doing an orientation on the 12th? Did they offer you a later one since you're out of state? I'm just curious :)

also-a nursing student friend of mine said we won't need uniforms until the fall semester. Just thought id add that in.

Awesome. Thanks for filling me in. They are making an exception for my orientation since it would be so hard for me to be there on the 3rd.

@NutriRX the chapters weren't listed in the Policy manual. I am guessing they are in the course manual, and the bookstore told me they didn't have those yet. I will check with them later in the week to see if they've gotten them.

Thank you! I'm just going to read and not worry about it for now. Ill get to the bookstore in a couple weeks.
